But far from it! Since the launch of the Honda Silver Wing, Suzuki Burgman 650 and Yamaha TMax 500 a significantly stronger wind blows in scooter circles. These models differ from the smaller classes in one central point: All three are powered by powerful two-cylinder engines that are firmly installed in the frame, as is the case with a motorcycle. In conventional scooters, the motor / gear unit is designed as a spring-loaded drive unit swing arm.

With relatively large wheels, powerful brakes and stable chassis, these mega scooters are ?? right ?? Motorcycles hardly lag behind in terms of driving behavior. Further arguments for this type of vehicle are the easy operation ?? thanks to the automatic you just have to accelerate and brake ?? as well as the easy sitting up due to the at least rudimentary access. In addition, thanks to storage space under the bench, scooters have a clear advantage when transporting goods. The other side of the coin: They are heavy as lead. Because of the full casing, the technology is also very hidden, and maintenance work is time-consuming and therefore costly. Honda Silver Wing

Shortly after Yamaha TMax the Honda Silver Wing entered the scooter world. With 600 cc and a whopping 50 hp, it surpasses the data of the Yamaha, but is of a completely different character. The much less aggressive design already indicates the direction. It’s called walking instead of jogging. That doesn’t have to be a disadvantage. The heavily tiered bench not only accommodates two people very comfortably, but also hides a spacious luggage compartment, which is complemented by two compartments in the leg shield. The chassis is also committed to comfort. In cruising mode it offers litter-like comfort, but quickly reaches its limits when calling up the power. In addition, the parallel twin, fed by an injection, vibrates under load and tends to drink. With the hooked locks, the chapter on negative properties is closed. The positive ones include the bright light, the pronounced wind and weather protection, the good workmanship and the overall high functionality. Technically, the Silver Wing has a conventional structure, the power transmission takes place via conventional variator and V-belt to the rear wheel. From model year 2003, the Silver Wing was available with a perfectly functioning ABS on request and for an additional charge of 500 euros. But that didn’t help the two-cylinder, at least in Germany.

With the appearance of the Suzuki Burgman 650, sales collapsed and Honda took the sofa off the market in late 2005. Those interested in used need not be frightened, because the mechanics are considered to be robust, and weak points have been eliminated as part of product recalls. On top of that, most of the silver wings enjoy the privilege of being in caring hands.

Those looking for a Silver Wing need at least 3000 euros, ABS versions are around 1200 euros more expensive. You can safely access the checkbook-maintained and accident-free copies.

Conclusion: TMax and Burgman 650 put an end to the Silver Wing in Germany. Apart from high consumption, too soft suspension settings and sometimes very clumsy locks, you can’t fault the fast, reliable and comfortable travel scooter.

Suzuki Burgman AN 650

Since 2003, the Suzuki Burgman 650 has been the uncrowned king of scooters, the Gold Wing among scooters. If you want space, comfort and equipment, you have come to the right place. 650 cm3 from two cylinders ensure sturdy and cultivated 55 hp, which push the luxury cruiser, which weighs just under 280 kilograms with a full tank, confidently and much more lively than feared. In addition to the more and more extensive equipment with increasing construction time (ABS, electrically folding mirrors and an equally adjustable windshield have been included since 2005) the Burgman offers an electronically controlled gearbox. Basically, it works like a variator (see box below), with the difference that it is not a mechanism with rollers, but an electric servomotor that determines the ratio.

This enables three switching modes: normal, sport and manual. In the latter, five (from model year 2005 six) virtual gears can be shifted using a toggle switch. In principle, the generously dimensioned mechanics are durable and robust, but there are still a few weak points: If the castle men from before 2005 sound like a gravel-filled tin can when idling, the so-called adapter wheel between the motor and the gearbox is worn out. The exchange is quick and does not cost the world. The repair is not really necessary – in contrast to the replacement of the under-dimensioned wheel bearings, which wear out quickly. It is difficult to check the hidden frame, which tends to rust with castle men who are employed all year round.

With almost 5,000 copies sold, the AN 650 is most frequently represented in this group. Accordingly, the selection is also greatest here. The fun with the Burgman starts at just under 4,000 euros. If it is an ABS model, 1500 euros more are due. High mileage is not an issue for the drive. In return, however, worn wheel bearings and rust on the exhaust and frame, especially on scooters that are used all year round. Many castle men are equipped with a topcase.

Conclusion
You can’t get more scooters. Period. Equipment, driving comfort and storage space are absolutely top. You hardly feel the heavy weight. Inadequately dimensioned wheel bearings and the frame that is prone to corrosion are the weak points of the Superburgers.

Yamaha XP 500 TMax

TMax is honored to have founded the class of two-cylinder scooters in 2001. With a displacement of 500 cm3, 40 hp, a top speed of almost 160 km / h and a cost price of 8400 euros, it eclipsed everything that had been there before. The very reliable parallel twin, which is firmly screwed into the frame, has a technical delicacy: Instead of a balancer shaft, a third cylinder with an opposing piston successfully ensures low-vibration operation. A directly flanged variomatic gearbox sets the speed and speed in the correct ratio and transfers the power to the rear wheel by means of two fully encapsulated chains. The TMax has lost none of its character after all the facelifts: It is less of a scooter than a fully clad, sporty two-wheeler with a comfortable seating position and automatic transmission. Although nominally the weakest, the TMax easily drives its two two-cylinder colleagues off the highway, as well as all other scooters.

A stable chassis, firm spring elements, powerful and stable brakes as well as a lively and easy-to-turn drive are the causes. The typical scooter attributes take a back seat: The storage options are rather modest for its size, as is the equipment at least from the years of construction up to 2004. From 2005 the TMax was optionally available with ABS. Mechanical weaknesses are not known, but the loud windshield borders on physical injury, which is why it is often shortened. And the light is rather poor. The main drawback was and is the price, which is why the TMax is rarely found in Germany.

Officially, almost 1,800 scooter fans have opted for a TMax to date. Apparently they are reluctant to part with him, because the offer is very manageable. Nothing goes below 3500 euros, regardless of equipment, accessories or mileage. Injection models (from 2004) cost at least 5000 euros. An accessory topcase is practically part of the standard equipment. On many of the Maxen, the windshield has been shortened to minimize noise.

Conclusion
Although the weakest two-cylinder in paper form, the TMax is less a scooter than an agile driving machine: sporty, fast, reliable. In return, the equipment and storage space are rather meager, the window is extremely loud.

This is how a scooter transmission works – getting going

Gearboxes usually consist of a large number of gears. Not so with most scooters.

With the exception of the Burgman 650, the manual PX Vespa and veterans like the Simson Schwalbe, a variator takes over the task of the transmission on the scooter. Its core is the variator shown on the right. This sits directly on the crankshaft and can be moved axially. In the star-shaped tracks, the base of which describes a quarter circle, rollers run which are supported against a cover that is fixedly mounted on the crankshaft. As the speed increases, the rollers are pressed outwards by centrifugal force, and the variator moves axially on the crankshaft. On its conically shaped rear side, the drive belt is supported against a counter-cone that is also firmly mounted.

By moving the variator, the diameter increases, that is, the transmission becomes longer. Since the length of the belt is constant, there is also a cone on the rear wheel. The gear ratio changes continuously, which explains the monotonous engine noise when accelerating. The principle is simple, but the characteristics of the variator change depending on the weight of the rollers, the shape and incline of the raceways and other details (counter-pressure spring, centrifugal clutch). When worn rollers no longer run smoothly, driving performance suffers. Tuning specialists such as Malossi or Polini have variomatic parts for almost every scooter, with which the driving dynamics can be improved.
