Sociable buddy guy

The Bulldog was supposed to re-explain the term “cruising”, which had been asked up and down countless times. But very few have understood their language. The 1100 is a sociable buddy.

Cruisers with an almost immeasurable wheelbase and weight were already in abundance on the market at the turn of the millennium, and they couldn’t be driven really well around the corner. For many pleasure riders, however, graces like a Ducati Monster were too stressful, too capricious. Yamaha wanted to address exactly this clientele with the Bulldog and put a speedy roadster with a cruiser heart on its wheels. An individual machine, modern and classic at the same time, designed with passion and manufactured in Italy. A part to love. Unfortunately, lovers of the bike, which was quite expensive at the time, weren’t exactly in line. Which doesn’t mean the concept was wrong. It just hasn’t been understood by many.

However, the 1100 V2 was already a technical oldie at the Bulldog premiere in 2001 and had its best days in the 80s hit TR-1 and in the great Virago. The air-cooled, at least 65 hp engine is reluctant to keep up with speeds of 3000 rpm or more, but that didn’t bother drivers of the 1100 Drag Star from the same company that was being offered at the same time. And if the Bulldog surfer isn’t chasing after sports pilots, that shouldn’t bother him either. If he is simply doing his own thing, he can look forward to many amenities with the BT 1100: low-maintenance cardan, a long-term relaxed seating position and a sovereignty when swinging lively curves that cruiser drivers can only dream of. Nevertheless, despite and from the 2005 facelift, the motorcycle only sold in the mid three-digit range. In 2007, Yamaha gently slumbered the Bulldog by selling it off. Clever used buyers now recognize the good value of this wellness cruiser.

Weak points such as leaky instruments have been a thing of the past since the model update in 2005. Occasionally there are reports of defective starter clutches, an expensive repair because of the replacement part. In general, however, due to the high quality of workmanship and careful maintenance, high mileages (over 50,000 kilometers) are no problem. Tires, brake pads and other wearing parts should still be checked during inspection and test drive in order not to spoil a bargain price with follow-up costs. Accessories are of secondary importance with the simple Bulldog. Yamaha offered interesting original accessories during the construction period, and show conversions pimped with them such as the “V.Metal” and “V.Skin” testify that a BT 1100 can exert even stronger stimuli. But Bulldoggers are different from typical cruiser fans and hardly make use of the upgrade program, although harder springs for the fork that is much too soft are considered a real improvement tip.

Market situation

You have to look specifically for really good offers and plan longer journeys. Everyday machines with age-related signs of use and a few kilometers on the clock (more than 20,000) are less in demand and only go away for the price (preferably significantly cheaper than 4,000 euros). Well-maintained and well-maintained specimens, which are otherwise only found in choppers and cruisers, are targeted by connoisseurs and enthusiasts, who pay more than 5000 euros for real gems. Overall, there is apparently very different demand from dealers. Some providers report that they are having a hard time with the 1100, others like to put the Yamaha in their shops. One dealer sees it this way: “If you don’t believe in this motorcycle yourself, you can sit on it. It is actually not difficult to convince interested parties of the good concept of the Bulldog. “
