It wasn’t that long ago that the four-cylinder world in the large class was still divided into clear camps: If you wanted to own the latest engine technology, stable chassis and modern chassis and brake technology, you couldn’t get past a thoroughbred super sports car. Advocates of sitting upright and friends of riding for two had to deal with naked or retro bikes such as a Suzuki Bandit 1200, Kawasaki ZRX 1100/1200 or Yamaha XJR 1300 content. No doubt nice motorbikes too, but not exactly the spearheads of two-wheel technology.

Both traveling athletes and sporty travelers feel at home on the first Fazer.

That changed in 2001 with the appearance of the FZS 1000, better known by its nickname Fazer. The concept today would be called a crossover, the mixing of different concepts into a new one. In addition to the motor, which is slightly throttled in the middle for more bite, also come from the R1 athlete, which is rightly considered one of the best brakes with the almost legendary one-piece brake calipers. The concept of combining road holding and comfort from the taut side of the fully adjustable chassis also comes from the athlete. However, this implementation did not work as well as the drive. The fork was revised back in 2003 and fans also see a need for action on the rear shock absorber. Converted series spring struts (e.g. from FRS Racing) or the conversion to Wilbers or Ohlins are popular. There is little to complain about on the sports tourism side.

The pilot’s accommodation is upright enough for long distances, but also sufficiently dynamic for fast-forward mode. The pillion does not have it so well: small cushion, high pegs. In return, the driver suffers from the noise of the windshield. Accessory discs, for example from MRA, provide a remedy. Little was changed on the Fazer during the entire construction period: in 2003 the fork set-up was modified and the light switch was omitted, in 2005 there was a U-Kat in order to comply with the Euro-2 standard.

Just as little as Yamaha a majority of the fans see reason to screw. As a rule, the conversions are limited to the mentioned chassis modification to a rear lift (e.g. from www.bikefarmmv.de) for easier handling and other exhausts.

A comparison test in the sister paper MOTORRAD, issue 14/2002, showed, however, that in terms of legal performance there is no way around the series pot. Mechanically, the touring athlete is absolutely solid, as an endurance test over 63,000 kilometers in PS 2/2003 showed.

Even with deep insights into the corresponding forum (www.fazerforum.eu) no abysses open up. In addition to occasional synchronization problems with the carburettor and worn out sockets of the EXUP system, valve clearance control is an issue. According to Yamaha, this is due at 40,000 kilometers, which is why this inspection is quite expensive. Those interested in such specimens should ensure that this inspection has taken place. In practice, however, it makes sense to check it earlier because it is sometimes necessary.

Despite the throttling, the Ex-R1 drive has remained a real racer. Reluctantly below, poor in the middle, but at the top from 7000 rpm, it burns off a fireworks display that lasts until 11500

When the successor to the very successful FZS 1000 was presented in 2006, expectations were high, after all the concept was the same: Slightly throttled R1 engine, cool brakes, good chassis. And the whole thing even in two versions: with and without a half-shell. To anticipate it right away, that worked with the brake.

Brute effect, clear pressure point and high transparency have always been the hallmarks of the brake systems with the famous one-piece brake calipers. And that from 2007 in the Fazer and from 2008 also in the nude FZ1 Standard ABS does its job very well except for a latent tendency to rollover on a non-slip surface.

Opinions differ on the chassis and ergonomics. The two dissimilar sisters are spring-loaded and cushioned enough for the brisk ride, but the footpegs that are far in front and at the top put an end to the sporty, sloping hustle and bustle quite early. Behind the barely cranked handlebars, the rider sits more in than on the bike, with the Fazer enjoying good wind protection in addition to the light as bright as day. In addition to the fairing, the Fazer, which was 600 euros more expensive at market launch, has the main stand, pillion grips and a better padded pillion cushion ahead of its uncovered sister.

What both of them have in common to this day is the unfortunate engine and transmission set-up. By means of lower compression (11.5: 1 instead of 12.4: 1 with the R1), tamer valve timing with less valve lift and a 2.45 kilogram heavier crankshaft, the ex-athlete should get more punch down there. Which thoroughly failed. On top of that, in addition to first gear, the overall gear ratio is quite long, which in combination with the down-nothing-in-the-middle-something-and-up-everything power output and the gruff and delayed throttle response at least in the first model year a confident appearance.

It is therefore hardly surprising that a lot of attention is paid to this issue. Smaller pinions with 16 or even 15 teeth z. B. from Enuma (www.enuma.de) should help the passage on the jumps and with power commanders or similar interventions in the mapping an attempt is made to improve the throttle response. With varying degrees of success – and not really legally either.

What is good for the R1 doesn’t have to be bad for the FZ1, thought Dominik Klein and breathed 183 hp into it.

Yamaha dealer Dominik Klein (www.yamaha-klein.de) approaches the problem with his own consistency. At the end of his efforts there are real 183 HP, unfortunately the whole thing is no longer eligible (see PS 10/2010). Regardless of the idiosyncratic vote, which put the 1000s in the lower ranks in comparison tests, Yamaha has brought almost 8000 units to the people in Germany to date, although not even the importer can say what the distribution looks like. Based on the used offers on the Internet, the disguised Fazer seems to have a slight advantage with around 60 percent.
According to official information, the only technical modifications of the Streetfighter were made for the 2007 model year.

In addition to the optional ABS available for the first time and an improved suspension setup with a softer rear spring, nothing has changed, according to Yamaha Germany. Even with the mapping of the injection software, everything should have stayed the same. It is only surprising that the spare part number of the control unit has changed, and the throttle response has become significantly less gruff from 2007, although it is far from being velvety. In the following years only the colors were changed.

The sister paper MOTORRAD devoted itself in issue 9/2008 in detail to the weaknesses of the Yamaha and came among other things to the results that the driving behavior with tires like the Metzeler Sportec M3 or the Michelin Pilot Power suits sporty pilots. And with dampers from Akrapovic or Bos, the output increased by five or six hp.

Conclusion: Mechanical problems are unknown with the FZ1 or Fazer, and those interested in used can choose from a wide range. The nude is often pimped noticeably (exhaust, rear, mini indicators, handlebars, etc.), which does not always correspond to the regulations of the StVZO, while with the Fazer even a topcase occasionally gets lost at the rear. In general, if you want to be happy with the Yamaha, you have to get involved, ideally with the motto: Live and let it spin.

Evaluation of measurement data
Even if the performance curves look almost congruent on paper, the old Fazer drives more harmoniously. This is due to the overall shorter overall gear ratio and the more successful gear ratio. On top of that, it generates up to 8 hp more power between 6000 and 7500 rpm. In addition, the steep increase in torque occurs around 1000 revolutions earlier and more gently. Nevertheless, the rear wheel performance of the FZ1 is up to approx. 140 km / h above the old Fazer, after which it takes over up to 170 km / h. Then the new one moves away again.
