With a mixture of excellent handiness and high performance, the FZS 600 is also in demand as a used one.

The recipe was simple, but it worked and brought the FZS 600 Fazer to a top seller level surprisingly quickly. Yamaha trimmed the Thundercat’s ex-supersport engine to make it suitable for touring and put it in an extremely handy chassis with slim tire dimensions. And bang, a new star of the popular 600 class was born. Gone are the days when competitor Suzuki, with the GSF 600 Bandit, received numbers across Europe that Yamaha could only dream of with the staid XJ 600. The task of creating a model with the FZS 600 Fazer that, with its mixture of respectable engine power, ingeniously light-footed handling and a suitable windbreak, can serve both sporty drivers and the travel clientele, has been a complete success.
Since its appearance in 1998, there has hardly been a comparison test, even with larger-capacity competition, in which the small Fazer would not have the edge in the sum of all properties. A good 12,000 buyers in Germany are solid proof of the excellent price-performance ratio of the 600 Yamaha. The used buyers, who do not have to expect any major defects from the machine, which is easy to pilot, benefit from the high inventory figures.
In MOTORRAD’s 50,000-kilometer long-distance test, apart from leaking valves in the first cylinder, there were hardly any problems worth mentioning. The timing chain tensioner caught in its detent once, and one could have done without the bony gearshift and the gears that sing at constant speed. The moderate light output of the headlights and the somewhat short mirror boom were criticized. On the chassis side, the sportier clientele was also satisfied. Only the slightly underdamped telescopic fork made notorious fast drivers and late brakes think about installing more progressive springs from the accessories. Passengers also complained about the lack of space. But actually everyday drivers, curve scrapers and bargain hunters were very satisfied with the exception of a tiny minority.
In the current year of construction 2002, a more dynamic cladding with new headlights and different mirrors ensure a better view to the front and rear. The Bridgestone BT 10 emerged as the best tire with good grip even in wet conditions, for which Yamaha has issued a clearance certificate. The Dunlop D 207, partly original equipment, and the Metzeler Z1 / Z2 are also convincing, less so than the Bridgestone BT 57, which is also used as the original tire. h with attached case system. The previously precise straight-line stability then gives way to slight to moderate chassis unrest, and the shimmy effect (handlebar flutter between 60 and 80 km / h) can be added, especially when the front tires are worn.
A relatively large number of Fazer drivers who prefer a “more characteristic sound” primarily choose a silencer from Bos, price between 307 and 511 euros, depending on the model and version. Good news for beginners: throttling to 34 hp costs around 70 euros plus one hour of working time. After the two years, the “climber” can still enjoy carefree driving with the reliable Fazer for a long time. Actually, a near-sure recipe for growing up happily.

Readers’ comments – Yamaha FZS 600 Fazer

“I am enthusiastic about the engine, negative the hard-shifting, loud gearbox.” Jorg Fogl, Arnsberg “The Fazer connects my ideas ?? Performance, good looks and great suitability for everyday use? in an optimal way. «Andrea Wendt, Trebur» The sound was boring, an oval Bos mute was a worthwhile investment. «Jorn Piesker, Baruth» That was the model I was waiting for. The first version, however, had a miserable bench seat and was an imposition for every passenger. «Claudia Esch, Bretzfeld-Bitzfeld» The headlight is under all cannon. Although I also activated the low beam on the high beam, the light cone is too narrow «. Michael Sczesny, by e-mail

Inside interview with Fritz Limbacher – Yamaha FZS 600 Fazer

? How is your offer of used Yamaha FZS 600 Fazer? We currently offer three machines, all fairly new, built in 2000 and 2001.? Who is buying the little Fazer specifically? The spectrum is wide. The middle-graders want drivers for whom the small bandit from Suzuki is too tired and the big one is too bulky ..? Which characteristics speak for the acquisition? The solid price-performance ratio and the sensible alternative to the extreme super athletes.? Does the prospect have to pay attention to any weak points? No, the Fazer is unproblematic, there are no special weaknesses.? Would the Fazer’s success with G-Kat be any better? When buying a new one, determined if the price would be right. This is not (yet) so relevant for used vehicles.

Improvement Tips – Yamaha FZS 600 Fazer

The telescopic fork of the 1998/1999 models is perceived as underdamped and too soft when driving in a sporty manner. Manufacturers such as Wirth, White Power, Hyperpro and others from the accessories trade offer more progressive springs (around 90 euros). From the 2000 model onwards, Yamaha has provided the telescopic fork with an additional adjustment of the spring base, which can also be mounted on the old model. However, if you have sporting ambitions or are traveling as a couple with a lot of luggage, think of an even more sensitive cushioning replacement from Wilbers or Ohlins. If you are not afraid of the investment (from 400 euros upwards), you will be pleased with the added comfort and even more precise wheel control. Lowering the chassisShort-grown drivers use kits from Alpha Technik, consisting of a lever, suspension travel limiter and a shortened side stand for approx 170 euros, also VH motorcycle technology, Yamaha also offers a set for around 153 euros. If the 3.5 centimeter lowering is not enough, the seat can also be padded by about four centimeters. Handlebars, mirrorsNot all Fazer drivers were satisfied with the ergonomics of the first handlebars. From the 2000 model onwards, Yamaha installed one with a modified offset, which is more suitable for short-armed riders. There are plenty of options for accessories (from around 45 euros). The conversion becomes more expensive if the height of the handlebar position requires longer brake lines. The trade now offers complete brake line kits for around 100 euros. The Fazer mirror booms, which are very short, have also been criticized. From 2002 Yamaha finally offers mirrors with more consideration with the new fairing. Cost for the pair: 145 euros. Passenger footrests The parking space for the pillion legs was unreasonable for people over 160 centimeters in the first two model years. From 2000 the FZS 600 has longer arms – now there is space for something longer-legged. Installation on the older model is only possible with a different position of the silencer. Price: 151 euros. Much cheaper: www.fazer.de offers adapters for the older model.Higher fairing screen Although the half fairing offers satisfactory wind protection up to around 170 km / h, larger Fazer pilots more often mount a higher screen from Five Stars or MRA (around 75 to 85 euros ).
