All-round talent

With their wide range of uses, the XJ-600 models from Yamaha are among the favorites of the biker nation. MOTORRAD took a look at two of these all-rounders.

Uli Holzwarth

End, over, over ?? after twelve successful years Yamaha production of the XJ-600 models. With the all-rounder, another evergreen of the Euro 2 emissions standard that will apply to new machines in the future has fallen victim. If you want to buy a new copy, you have to hurry because the dealers only have small stocks available. On the other hand, the selection is much larger on the second-hand market, where the XJ 600 is well represented as a long-term top seller.
This is also the case with Manfred Domaier and Manuel Wahl from Motorcity, a large used dealer in the Swabian town of Albershausen. On the day of the visit, five machines of the four-cylinder, which is particularly popular with newcomers and returners, are for sale there. We are interested in two models from first hand. The black one XJ 600 N from 1999 with 11400 kilometers on the clock could at first glance be considered a Neufahr-
go through stuff if it weren’t for that
worn front brake pads and the worn rear tire. Otherwise, neither scratches nor chain smear or even rust spoil the excellent condition. Only under the
In the mild light of the autumn sun, Domaier himself discovers a tiny dent on the right side of the tank, which was not noticed in the showroom. Spontaneously
He reduced the price from 3390 euros to 3000 euros, including a fresh inspection, new brake pads and TuV as well as the mandatory used guarantee. A great price, despite that
small optical defect.
The second example, an XJ 600 S with a mileage of just 4600 kilometers, cannot do so well. The Yamaha, first registered in 1998, has a slight fall scratch on the left side of the fairing and shows signs of rust on the brake discs, exhaust and luggage rack. “Typical damage to the booth,” states Domaier, which should, however, be repaired as part of the inspection. Nevertheless, 3200 euros seem to us ?? the original claim was 3490 euros ?? A little too high for this motorcycle.

Yamaha XJ 600 S Diversion

This XJ 600 S shows that low mileage is no guarantee of good condition. Rust on the brake discs, luggage rack, exhaust and handlebars as well as porous rubber parts are indications of longer idle times in the open air. Another flaw is the small scratch on the fairing, which can clearly be traced back to a slight contact with the ground at low speed. Technically, however, everything seems to be okay: the engine picks up the gas cleanly, the steering stop shows no suspicious chipped paint. Nevertheless: In this case you should negotiate again about the mentioned limit of 3200 euros.

Yamaha XJ 600 N

The condition of a used motorcycle can hardly be more perfect than with this black XJ 600 N. Not the slightest trace of rust, no faded plastic parts, almost flawless paintwork without the smallest scratch? This is how motorcycles only look when they are parked in a garage and cared for with care. The minimal dent on the right-hand side of the tank is shown dramatically in the photo (right), but in reality it can only be seen from a certain angle. That is why the price, which has been reduced to 3000 euros, including an inspection, new brake pads at the front, a fresh MOT and the dealer used guarantee, is okay.

Model overview – Yamaha XJ 600 N / S

True to the motto “Less is more”, Yamaha presented the XJ 600 S Diversion in autumn 1991, the successor to the mid-range machine previously known simply as the XJ 600. Compared to the stronger previous model, which founded the class of 600 motorcycles in the mid-80s, the Diversion came across as quite spartan. The completely redesigned all-rounder not only had to do without lever deflection of the central spring strut, but also dispensed with the second brake disc in the front wheel and with a maximum of 61 hp in the unthrottled version. Thanks to the comparatively low price of 8,600 marks, the universal talent quickly won the sympathy of all those bikers who did not want to commit themselves to a specialist. Among them were and still are many newcomers and re-entrants who enjoy the uncomplicated handling, the smooth power delivery of the four-cylinder and the comfortable seating position. That the diversion ?? as well as the undisguised XJ 600 N, which was offered in parallel from 1994 ?? is not one of the most stable motorcycles, this clientele is less annoying than the sometimes high gasoline consumption, which can reach values of ten liters per 100 kilometers on the autobahn. The Yamaha XJ 600 is therefore more something for the leisurely connoisseur who is looking for and will find driving fun away from the extremes on winding country roads. After multiple model maintenance measures, especially models from 1998 onwards are noticeably more mature, recognizable by the stiffer fork and the double disc brake on the front wheel. If you are looking for a problem-free, comfortable and inexpensive motorcycle with a four-cylinder engine, you can confidently buy such a motorcycle, as long as the price is right. this product philosophy worked perfectly in the case of the XJ 600. The Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) currently has an inventory of no less than 38,300 units. Second-hand buyers can therefore draw on unlimited resources, so the right XJ 600 should be found for every budget. The huge supply is now offset by a somewhat more cautious demand. Especially the younger models from 1998 compete with technically much more modern motorcycles such as the Honda Hornet 600, the Suzuki SV 650 or the Yamaha FZS 600 Fazer. This means that sellers of an XJ 600 must keep a reasonable price distance to bikes with comparable conditions (age, previous owner, mileage) in order not to get stuck on their bike. Older XJ 600, on the other hand, prove to be comparatively stable in price. The Schwacke list, for example, estimates a dealer selling price for an XJ 600 S from 1994 at around 1,800 euros (81,000 kilometers). In practice, however, motorcycles with such mileage are traded significantly lower. This also applies to the unclad N models, which are less popular with both new and used buyers than the clad Diversion. Real difficulties only arose in the first year of construction with a too weak strut mount on the swing arm and a too lax strut. In addition, there were isolated reports of damage to the starter freewheel. Furthermore, you should pay attention to porous rubber lines of the carburettor heating with older XJs built up to 1996. At higher mileage of 40,000 kilometers or more, howling noises from the gearbox indicate tooth decay on the gear wheels, which can particularly affect those in fifth gear. Since throttling or dethrottling on the XJ 600 are expensive depending on the version and model year, it is advisable to limit the selection to the desired performance variant from the outset when buying a used vehicle. You can get an overview on the Internet at www.yamaha-motor.de and from the authorized dealer. However, newcomers with a level driver’s license who would like to drive their XJ for longer should choose the open version with 61 HP, which can be reduced to 34 HP relatively inexpensively with reduction kits from the accessories, e.g. with a conversion kit from Alpha Technik, phone 08036/300720 for 99 euros. Otherwise you can concentrate on the usual checkpoints during the tour. Optimization It is particularly the chassis weaknesses that annoy many XJ pilots. While you can help an XJ 600 from year of construction 1998 with progressive fork springs from the accessories (between 80 and 100 euros) and a modern pair of tires from Bridgestone BT 45 or Metzeler ME 330/550 comparatively inexpensively, it is more expensive with older models . When optimizing a 1993 Yamaha XJ 600 S (issue 16/2000), MOTORRAD only came after the additional installation of a high-quality retrofit strut, for example from White Power (SO Products, phone 05924/78360, 440 euros) or Hagon ( Wilbers, phone 05921/6057, 335 euros) to a satisfactory result. In addition, the blunt single-disc brake at the front noticeably benefits from the installation of biting sintered metal brake pads and the use of a steel-sheathed brake line. The addition of a fork stabilizer, which helps the Yamaha to achieve significantly better steering precision, is also surprisingly positive. However, even such an improved XJ does not suddenly become an athlete, it simply lacks the genes.Tests in MOTORRAD * XJ 600 S: 24/1991 (T); 1/1992 (VT); 8/1992 (T with 61 hp); 10/1993 (T with 27 and 34 hp); 1/1994 (LT); 18/1995 (VT); 26/1997 (T); 8/1998 (VT); 14/2000 (VT); 19/2000 (VT) XJ 600 N: 22/1993 (T); 24/1993 (VT with 34 hp); 6/1995 (VT); 17/1999 (VT); 23/1999 (VT); 23/2002 (TT)
