Nothing for the stoic motorway marathon, meditative hiking on sweeping country roads and any kind of travel event. Passengers are only welcome on short journeys. Hyperactive, restless, greedy, supermotos and funduros are a poor choice for those who need harmony and who are quiet motorcyclists.

But just right for everyone who is always in the starting blocks and likes action films from the driver’s perspective. In the course with very small curve radii, the slim fun machines with wide soles reveal that no top performance is required to ensure a strong output of happiness hormones. Get out of everyday life, up on the kart track: With the KTM and the Suzuki goes there from the Luzi. Whereby also with weaker dosed mood enhancers from Aprilia or Honda can counteract a dreary everyday life, they turn the work route along dark urban canyons into a colorful spectacle. Supermotos and funduros are real machines and therefore a hot tip.

Aprilia Pegaso 650 Strada

It was a logical step for Aprilia to bring the Pegaso 600 onto the market as a designated fun bike in 1990. The Italians had recognized the signs of the times, because with only minimally converted enduros like the Wind 600, the fun on asphalt was limited. Technically, the Strada no longer has much in common with the Pegaso of yore, brake fading, a twisting fork and a somewhat weak engine are a thing of the past. Genetically, the one newly constructed for 2005 is stylish Pegaso 650 with the suffix “Strada” (will not be used again from 2007), however, just like her ancestor, she was programmed to romp on the road. And it’s back in line with the trend. In the meantime, the Pegaso had gained a reputation as a solid single-cylinder travel enduro, was often stocked with suitcases and made sedate middle-class tourists happy due to its good-natured driving characteristics. Also great, but different.

The more exalted Strada, on the other hand, looks much more aggressive, sleek, angular – to put it badly: not as chubby and boring as the 650 Pegaso of earlier vintages. In contrast to its predecessor, the Pegaso will be powered by a powerful Minarelli engine with a fully sufficient 48 hp instead of a Rotax from 2005 onwards. The single cylinder also performs reliably in other fun devices such as the Yamaha XT 660 X, MT-03 or Derbi Mulhacen 659. The tuning in the lower speed range is not particularly good for Aprilia. Fortunately, this does not play a role in brisk asphalt surfing, and this is exactly where the Strada shines, not least because of its fantastic four-piston brakes with 320 mm discs and filigree 17-inch wheels for pure road use. Cleanly processed and technically mature – as a good used one, the Italian is exactly suitable for down-to-earth people with a weakness for the extravagant.

Market situation
The Pegaso 650 is in demand, but the older models (1992 to 2004) are more in demand, because many private sellers offer their machines very cheaply (up to 2000 euros). The more modern, pepped up Pegaso from year of construction 2005 is mainly offered for sale by dealers, and as a young used one, it often turns out to be a slow-moving. Price demands over 4500 euros are therefore very optimistic. Well-maintained Pegaso Strada with mileage of around 10,000 kilometers can be made out from just over 3,000 euros (new price: around 7,000 euros). The selection is good between 3500 and 4000 euros and the value is right.

High-quality stainless steel exhaust system, light aluminum rims, loving details such as a light-emitting diode rear light. Overall, the pretty one remains FMX 650 loyal to a slimline Supermoto line and has a good appearance. Actually an attractive offer that Honda made its customers in 2005. But the shot went wrong. Once again, because already with the inexpensive road enduro SLR 650 and Vigor, Honda tried to hit the soul of the motorcycle novice in 1996 and 1999 – and failed. The modified single-cylinder engine from the time-honored Dominator was used again for the FMX. Air-cooled, robust, proven – but technically a relic from the eighties and cut to a meager 38 hp due to noise and emissions regulations. This is where the crux lies: even if the 650, at 176 kilograms, is by no means overweight, this engine simply has too little power for a current motorcycle that does a supermoto. In any case, this is what various retailers say in unison when asked about customer feedback.

At the market launch, Honda argued with the enormous number of drivers without a machine, so-called sleepers, who should be shaken up with the hip FMX 650 and for whom good driveability, a low price (less than 6,000 euros) and a great appearance are more important than the end performance. Good thoughts, but apparently only a few shared them. The Honda was sold at new prices below 5000 euros, and in 2007 it said goodbye to the German market. That makes the FMX very exciting as a used one, because because of the general dumping prices it fits into the prey scheme of clever bargain hunters. Manoeuvrable, controllable at all times and very reliable, also available with 34 hp, the chic Funduro is particularly recommended for young beginners. But even for all other motorcyclists, the Honda is really no brake for fun when scouring the dense urban jungle, even with 38 hp.

Market situation
Private sellers are already offering the Honda for around 2500 euros, a basis for negotiation, mind you. Dealer offers including warranty start at 3000 euros. Targeted inquiries about the model are rare, but if so, then it is younger beginners who are looking for an affordable, reliable motorcycle. The largest range of well-maintained and well-maintained FMXs with usually only one or two previous owners and mileage under 10,000 kilometers can be found at authorized dealers for around 3500 euros. Almost as good as new specimens (not older than a year, less than 5000 kilometers) are offered for sale for 4000 euros.

Raubein, rough journeyman, vibrating plate – strong words for a strong motorcycle. Violent vibrations, a rock-hard seating position (which, however, also fits tall people well) and a power delivery that takes your boots off: with the KTM LC4 640 Supermoto, irrationality reigns supreme. Good thing, because others are there for compromises, she wants to be whipped. Even with road approval, the KTM is a thoroughbred racehorse. It has its reputation, which increases the stability of its value, but also its airs, which can only be dealt with through particularly attentive care. Means: Every 5000 kilometers from the service, after 10,000 kilometers in a forced pace (apparently normal for this motorcycle) a defective cylinder base gasket is not uncommon. Even 200 kilometers of continuous full throttle on the motorway can ensure the death of the 54 hp Rotax single-cylinder, as some workshops report. Hobby mechanics need to know: just drain the oil and pour in new one is ’not’, otherwise the grim reaper will come! The complete oil system must be vented, please with the utmost care.

One dealer comments: “The biggest weak point on this motorcycle is usually the owner.” However, if he adheres to all maintenance rules, the engine, which was basically built in 1987, is a safe bet. Overall, the Supermoto, built from 1998 to 2006, is robust and can take a lot. Only the fork is stubborn, and from 130 km / h there is a lack of safe straight-line stability – the result of long suspension travel (front / rear 265/300 millimeters) and low weight (160 kilograms). But: from zero to 100 km / h in 4.5 seconds, a top value. And it is precisely such top sporting performances that explain why the iconic 640 is so popular with fans as a capricious used one.

Market situation
The 2005/2006 model years are in great demand because of the double exhaust system. In good condition and with four-digit mileage, buyers pay up to 5500 euros. The largest selection is available for around 3500 euros: built between 2002 and 2004, around 10,000 kilometers. The older the used vehicle, the higher the proportion of private sellers (over half of all offers). Although prices from 2000 euros for those born between 1998 and 2000 encourage young KTM beginners to buy, caution is advised: Make sure that the general condition is perfect, any conversion parts should be registered, otherwise there is an inevitable risk of high follow-up costs.

You can hardly have more fun with a motorcycle. “It’s good that nobody knows …”, one can be almost thievingly happy in the case of the DR-Z 400 SM, because, for this reason, the Suzuki as a used vehicle is a very hot tip. Only racing-oriented Supermoto freaks have long known about the advantages of the very light (146 kilograms with a full tank), lively and, above all, inexpensive 400 series. Other motorcyclists who are interested in fun bikes and street-legal supermoto usually leave the DR-Z outside when looking for a suitable base. Comparatively low power (40 hp) and a displacement shortfall of more than 200 cubic centimeters compared to very popular supermotos like the KTM LC4 – the ice cream jury is not expected to give a fair judgment. So it’s better to decide for yourself and saddle up for a test ride! Extremely slim with a comparatively narrow 140 mm rear tire, narrow seat, but fat upside-down fork, the SM takes on a sporty aggressiveness. Not for softies, it actually challenges the driver’s courage when things get really down to business with grippy tires and speeds above 5000 rpm.

Most of the time, the driver disconnects before anything touches down – the freedom from lean angles is ingenious. The brakes are not overwhelmed even on long, heavy pass descents. The combination of playful handling and the agile motor, which is permanently stable even under high loads, is impressive. When it comes to popular sport on extremely winding streets or even on a kart track approved for motorbikes, the Suzuki does not show up in a hurry. However, the high-quality standard chassis is always sufficient, and the DR-Z 400 SM also applies to the DR-Z 400 SM without being on the fence: get off? no thanks!

Market situation
A targeted search is worthwhile, even if the offers from retailers and private providers (about the same amount) are very manageable. However, demand is also subdued, so that good specimens are easy to spot on the Internet. Built from 2005 to 2007, in 2008 only models with daily registration, it cost just over 5500 euros when new. At times sold with an official Suzuki discount for less than 5,000 euros, the SM is a well-maintained used vehicle with well below 10,000 kilometers between 3,000 and 4,000 euros. Cheaper ones are offered in winter, then often rusted copies – rather the exception.

Radical, weird, wild? young motorcyclists can identify with it. Slim line, but fat tires, sit comfortably upright, but turn around the corner in a sporty way? Outwardly, the light motorcycles differ only slightly from the larger-capacity, “adult” relatives. The big plus of the little ones: They by no means look puny. No wonder that machines such as the MZ 125 SM or XT 125 X are well received by young people, because the following applies to the young: the eye also buys. Fortunately, some manufacturers have recognized this and are launching interesting models such as the new Suzuki DR 125 SM in the 125cc class, which has been a bit sleepy for years. This is good for young beginners with usually a tight budget, in this way the range of cheap, but very attractive used vehicles is growing steadily.

Homemade: An intoxicating supermoto can also be built individually on the basis of a conventional enduro.

The transformation from enduro to supermoto mainly happens through different wheels and brakes. The cheapest solution (from 600 euros without tires) for the wheels: The original wheel hubs are converted to new 17-inch rims, the rim width is usually 3.5 inches at the front and between 4.25 and 5.5 inches at the rear, depending on the model . The tires then have the dimensions 120 / 70-17 or 160 / 60-17. Complete wheel sets (from 1000 euros) with brake discs of the same size are more expensive, but more versatile. So the machine can continue to be used off-road with the standard wheels, but if you switch to the 17-inch set, the ?? Supermoto mode ?? the total height of the motorcycle, and thus its center of gravity changes in favor of better road holding ?? without travel restrictions. A good solution for drivers without sporting ambitions. However, an enduro only mutates into a fully-fledged supermoto with strong, snappy brakes. The conversion to a completely new brake system with a 320 disc, four-piston caliper and a more powerful hand pump (only disc retrofitting from 200 euros, complete with retrofit brake caliper and pump for 1000 euros) has proven itself. Everyone routes – driving for everyone

Urgent recommendation: it is essential to contact the organizer personally beforehand, because group bookings can quickly fill up the routes. Alternatives

Funduros have existed since the end of the eighties, and supermotos designed for the street have existed since the end of the nineties. All in all, therefore, rather young types of motorcycle, so there is a comparatively manageable range of products for those interested. Two-cylinder fun devices such as the Ducati Multistrada or the KTM 950 Supermoto, which are very popular, but still very expensive as used ones, have been new additions for a few years. In the case of claims well over 5000 euros, these machines are only relevant for those specifically looking for bikes as new.

BMW F 650 CS
Low-maintenance toothed belt drive, powerful, economical motor, high reliability. In addition, foolproof in handling. ABS is also available. The BMW (2002 to 2005), which was only built for four years, is the sensible alternative among the unreasonable. 50 hp, 180 km / h, 193 kg, 3.7 l / 100 km

Ducati Multistrada
Often misunderstood. The two-cylinder 1000 series (2003 to 2006, then the 1100 series), like the younger 620 series sister (2005/2006, 63 hp), is available from around 4500 euros. Tight chassis, tight engine? ideal for street sweeping. Data 1000: 84 PS, 210 km / h, 220 kg, 5.2 l / 100 km

Husqvarna SM 610

KTM 950 Supermoto
