Let’s dare a blind forecast. According to the tariff calculator, you will actually find a number of insurance companies that would insure your favorite vehicle for significantly less euros. Hmm, one click and you would have secured the economy pack. Full service included, the old one would even be terminated by the new provider and so on. Sounds tempting! But wait a minute, as a critical consumer, of course, you know that not all that glitters is gold – and that the well-known comparison portals are anything but the benevolent Robin Hoods of the insurance industry.

Of course, they too want to nibble on the fat cake and earn money with the new deal. And because they are primarily not benefactors, but tough calculating economists, that of course has an impact on the ranking. Ever since the Munich Regional Court condemned the Check24 Internet platform to ensure more transparency in the summer of this year, it has been known that a commission of up to 100 euros can flow per new contract and, on the other hand, well-known insurers do not even appear in the comparison ranking because they do not want to pay a placement fee to Check24. Including, for example, industry giants such as HUK Coburg – one of the largest motor vehicle insurers in Germany.

Interestingly, the HUK has stayed out of our comparison for the first time this year – even though we neither receive commissions nor charge placement fees. At the time of going to press it wasn’t clear why. Especially since the HUK has done extremely well in recent years – both in terms of the premium amount in our sample calculations and the actual performance features.

It is precisely the second point that should give you pause for thought after the vague Internet comparison. Because a specific statement about what is actually being offered in return for the annual insurance premium cannot really be read out. To do this, you would first have to rummage through the small print before signing the contract and see which services are included and what is under the table.

In the MOTORCYCLE tariff comparison, on the other hand, we let the pants down on all 47 insurance offers that we calculated using the example of the popular Yamaha MT-09. The analysis professionals from the rating agency Franke und Bornberg rummaged through all the contract contents in meticulous detail, assessing and appraising them accordingly. And unfortunately come to the conclusion every year that the offers for motorcyclists are still a long way from being at the level of car insurance (see interview).

After all, four tariffs in our list can secure the coveted award with five stars in the qualitative assessment. And a look at the column with the annual premium payments for the legally required liability or combination of liability and partial coverage shows: the whole thing even at moderate prices!

On the other hand, our table also shows: Many insurers disgrace customer Kradler with below-average service packages. And let it reach deep into your pocket. A total of 13 tariffs are awarded two meager asterisks. 25 others offer only average goods. The picture would be even more dramatic if we only evaluated specific performance features that are specific to the bike. Because there is an urgent need for action for all insurers in this area. Real motorcycle insurance, which not only has a motorcycle in its name, but also includes it in the service catalog, is still in short supply. But what is not, can still become. Sparmobil: How cheap and how well can Yamaha’s MT-09 be insured?

Compare online? Can be done, but does not lead to the cheapest or the best insurance. MOTORRAD checks differently.

Regardless of whether you check the new insurance for your bike 24 times on the Internet, finance scouting or verivoxing: the well-known Internet portals not only compare, but above all offer new insurance. Which means that they appear primarily as insurance brokers who, depending on the company, collect commissions that vary in size and thus influence the ranking. In the meantime there have been court rulings: For example, the industry giant Check24 has to inform its customers more clearly that they earn their money by brokering insurance contracts. The MOTORRAD tariff comparison, on the other hand, does not intend to seduce you, but rather to offer you a transparent comparison option. That is why we have been working with the independent rating agency Franke und Bornberg (www.franke-bornberg.de) for years. The Hanoverian insurance analysts evaluate tariffs and services on the basis of binding sources, which must be mentioned in the contractual conditions. This year we used a Yamaha MT-09 as a sample case with the following key data: EZ 5/2014, 847 cm³, 85 kW / 115 PS, ABS, new price (2014): 7,995 euros, current value (2016): 5,500 euros. The policyholder is male, 32 years old, has had his driver’s license since 2002, is the sole user and is divided into SF class 14. The registration district is HH (zip code 21107), the annual mileage is 4500 km, there is no garage. Insurers that are rated with five stars in our ranking and for which a maximum of 50 percent of the average value of all premiums must be paid in comparison are awarded the MOTORRAD top tariff.

  • Sanctions: If the key data are not correct when the contract was concluded (e.g. vehicle user, parking space in garage, mileage), there is a risk of fines.
  • Self-regulation: Pay for minor damage to property yourself without reporting this to the insurance company. But the sums are limited.
  • Reporting of damage: Duty of the policyholder to report damage above a certain amount to the police.
  • Special equipment / accessories: The value of the add-on parts should be included in the insurance, especially with extensively converted motorcycles.
  • Protective helmet / protective clothing: Good: Damage to motorcycle helmets is now covered by some insurers.
  • New price compensation: If the vehicle is stolen, will the new or current value be replaced? Insurers handle this very differently.
  • New for old deduction: If a new part is purchased for the damaged (used) item, insurers can offset the value advantage against the amount of damage.
  • Gross negligence: Under what circumstances can insurers reduce benefits with this objection? With the standard regulation, the insurer waives a reduction, except in the case of drug and alcohol consumption or if theft is possible.
  • Collision with animals: Doesn’t just have to be the classic game accident. The partial coverage also applies in the event of a collision with the Alpine cow?
  • Animal bite / consequential damage: What to do if small rodents bite open rubber hoses or paralyze the electrical system? Some societies differentiate between the causers, others in turn exclude consequential damage. Basically a component of the partial coverage.
  • Natural hazards: Are damage in the event of natural disasters covered by the partial comprehensive insurance?
  • Transport on a ferry: a standard means of transport for motorcyclists in attractive holiday regions, but unfortunately far from being an inclusive service for many insurers.

Michael Franke (54). The managing director of the Hanover-based rating agency Franke und Bornberg comments on the current tariff comparison of 47 motorcycle insurance companies.

In the summer of 2016, a motorcycle insurer lured new customers with a ten percent discount if they wear a certain brand of helmet. Do you think that such discount promotions will increase?

Car insurance is arguably the most competitive insurance at this time of the year. The price war starts in October and ends on January 1st of the new year. All insurers lure you here with cheap offers. At the start of the Krader season, there will certainly also be one or the other insurer that will make a name for itself with such campaigns. From our point of view, however, this will tend to be an exception.

Many probably pay attention to the lowest possible insurance premium. Which performance feature should the motorcyclist not forego in his insurance??

Basically you should pay attention to a healthy mediocrity. The insurance must suit the life situation of the individual. Important performance criteria are, for example, colliding with animals, as this can happen to almost anyone who is on the move with their bike. Or the assumption of damage caused by animal bites, especially for vehicle owners whose machines are parked outside when not in use. There are crucial differences in performance here. The Mallorcapolice is also indispensable for motorcyclists abroad, as long as you don’t want to miss out on a jaunt there. In most countries, the sums insured are lower than ours and it can quickly happen that the sums insured in the visiting country are exhausted.

In our annual evaluations, you will notice time and again that motorcycle insurance is neglected compared to a car. In which points should the catalog of services for motorcyclists be significantly improved in the future?

Differences in performance are mainly to be found in the “new for old” deduction, in the new or purchase price compensation or in the special equipment. The motorcyclist is usually worse off. From our point of view, the performance criteria for motorcyclists should be adjusted. Because no matter whether car or motorcycle, provided z. If, for example, the vehicle is stolen twelve months after purchase, it is a real advantage for the policyholder to receive the full new price or purchase price and not the actual value.

Motorbike regional classes in comparison

Motorbike regional classes in comparison. As with cars, the premiums for motorcycle insurance depend on where you live. The calculation is based on regional classes (RK), in which the damage and accident balance of a particular area is recorded. In contrast to car insurance, for which all 415 German registration districts are classified, for motorbike insurers only the 38 government districts serve as the basis for the subdivision. The corresponding RK classification is now carried out using so-called index values. For the regional liability classes, the frequency of claims and the average amount of damage are included in the indices. B. the number of thefts or accidents with wildlife. An index value below 100 means: less damage than the national German average, the RK is correspondingly low for this area. The RK itself is much more coarsely structured on a motorcycle than on a car. There are currently five (car: twelve) for liability insurance, eight (car: 16) for partial coverage..

MOTORCYCLE conclusion

With 47 different insurance offers, our 2017 tariff comparison is more extensive than it has been in a long time. But that doesn’t mean that motorcyclists are spoiled for choice. Only four motorcycle insurances convince with an outstanding range of services and receive top marks in terms of quality. At the same time, these four tariffs (Allianz Topschutz, Alte Leipziger Comfort, Ergo Modul Komfort Plus and R + V Police Plus) can also convince with attractive annual premiums in our sample case. In contrast, 38 tariffs show a maximum of average performance.
