V-Power

Regardless of the engine concept, Shell propagates an increase in performance of up to ten percent through the new miracle fuel called V-Power.

There are things between heaven and earth that cannot be explained and work wonders. And others whose advantages fizzle out in spite of a plausible explanation. On the offensive, Shell recently launched its new wonder fuel
V-Power launches due to its
chemical properties is said to bring performance advantages over conventional fuels. But first of all it has to be clarified whether the energy drink actually gives wings in practice.
The octane number (see box on the right), a measure of the knock resistance of petrol, is 100 at V-Power. This is above that of the other types of petrol on the market. In addition, a friction reducer is supposed to improve the acceleration and performance values of the new Shell fuel. However, the mineral oil company explains that the potential of power fuel is particularly evident in modern engines
called knock sensors unfolds better and converts more energy into driving force. These sensors recognize the tendency towards uncontrolled combustion and report it to the engine management, which regulates the ignition point along the knock limit, which has a corresponding effect on the performance. In fleet tests in practical driving operations, the developers at Shell want up to ten percent more with V-Power, depending on the engine type
Performance and five percent more spin-
moment compared to normal super.
In motorcycle engines, however, knock control is the exception. Most modern two-wheel drive units usually have considerably smaller ones
Cylinder units with correspondingly compact combustion chambers and therefore have far fewer problems with uncontrolled combustion than car engines. An indication of this is the fuel prescribed by the manufacturer. While the Japanese motorcycle companies allow their high-performance four-cylinder engines with a compression ratio of up to 12: 1 regular gasoline, most passenger cars, despite this, require much less
Compression almost consistently great. Does V-Power really do anything for two-wheeled engines??
To clarify this question, MOTORRAD sent several test persons with very different drives to the test bench:
O A representative of time-honored engine technology appeared Moto Guzzi Le Mans Rosso Corsa, whose engine design dates back to the 1970s, for a test. Their hemispherical combustion chambers with two valves per cylinder and thus the decentralized location of the spark plug by no means offer ideal conditions for optimal combustion.
O modern engine construction represents the Harley-Davidson V-Rod, whose four-valve engine with central spark plug has contemporary roof combustion chambers.
The third member of the group also has these, albeit in a smaller format. With a specific output of over 180 hp per liter, the Yamaha YZF-R6 with a 600 series four-cylinder the fraction of the absolute high-performance athletes.
For reproducible results-
Did the engines perform extensive series of measurements on the dynamometer? first with the prescribed fuel, then with V-Power ?? let yourself endure. But the results did not confirm the promising forecasts made by Shell (see diagrams). The R6 alone showed one with the magic potion
marginal muscle gain in the upper
RPM range, which is within
the measurement tolerance moves. In particular
In some cases, however, the 100-octane gasoline can show its indisputable qualities, as are two other cases-
games showed. The company’s Wudo BMW Drago brought up to speed (see MOTORRAD 15/2003) tended to ring in the lower speed range at full load.
After refueling with V-Power, the knocking signals stopped. Even with the motocross veteran Yamaha Shell cured HL 500 by editor Gert Thole
V-Power the material-killing bell.
The bottom line is: for modern two-wheel engines, the additional financial expense of the juice, which is 15 cents more expensive than normal gasoline, is not worth it. In the case of tuned or older motorcycles with an unfavorable combustion chamber shape, V-
Power, on the other hand, saves engine life.

Octane number

The octane number describes the knock resistance of a petrol: the higher the knock resistance. There are two methods for determining the octane number, the research method and the motor method. The values given at the petrol stations refer to the research octane number RON, which is decisive for the knocking speed. The octane value up to 100 indicates how much volume percent of the extremely knock-resistant iso-octane is in a mixture of knock-friendly n-heptane. If this mixture shows the same knocking behavior in a test engine as the fuel from the pump, its octane number is then determined. The iso-octane is assigned 100 RON, the n-heptane 0.
