French country roads of the D-order are perfect for turning quickly around the corner. But which set is the best for getting on the bike here? Eleven textile combinations have to show in our test area how well they can withstand inclines, sun rays and bad weather.

Jorg Lohse

Crime scene Provence, southern France. Big V8 engines roar around the corner and turn 600s in the five-digit range. The Paul Ricard race track in Le Castellet is not far away. Whoever turns the throttle here is of course wearing a leather one-piece. But the racetrack doesn’t appeal to us today. We are calling for D-Day and want to hunt curves on the smallest French departmental roads with Triumph Street Triple and Yamaha MT-09. We packed eleven textile suits in our march packs, the cheapest for around 370 euros, the most expensive for just under 840 euros. The equipment list reads similarly for all of them: sporty cut, weatherproof climate membrane, ventilation function for the summer, thermal lining for the colder days of the motorcycle season.

Blue sky, the sun is laughing, but the slight aftertaste of the mistral nibbles on the thermometer column. Like an oversized Carrera track, the D2 nestles in the rocky landscape of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. With one suit after the other we sweep our self-marked circuit. On the plateau behind the coastal town of La Ciotat, the cold wind tugs at the polyamide fibers and tries to pave its way inside. In the 180-degree bends down from the Col de l’Ange, however, the body really gets up to temperature again and sticks out against it.

A small country hotel in Gemenos below the grandiose Col de l’Espigoulier serves as our base camp. Fill out the test protocol, change clothes, feel the tires, next turn. After two days, the favorite choice. The testers agree. Dainese, Dane, Difi, hero and Rev’it deliver perfect sets for curves of all kinds. But what happens when rain pours down on the station wagon? Off to the wet showdown from the high-pressure gun. Does the rain on order turn our ranking upside down? Resolution on the next pages.

MOTORRAD verdict: good

Sinisalo Racy / Rate

Sporty motorcycle all-round textile suits in the test

mps photo studio

Sinisalo Racy / Rate.

Providers: M. Kroner, phone 0 40/5 51 10 55, www.sinisalo.com; Price jacket / pants / set: 279.00 / 219.00 / 498.00 euros; Sizes: 46 to 62, trousers available in short and long sizes; To dye: Black, black / gray; Weight (in size 52): 3.6 kilograms; Materials: Outer fabric made of polyamide, lining and removable thermal inlay made of polyester; Climate membrane: k. MOTORRAD verdict: good

This is how MOTORRAD tests

Real sun and wind, rain from the cannon

The French Provence is an ideal test area to check out the new motorcycle equipment long before the start of the season in Germany. Which is why the MOTORRAD service crew has been setting up their test camp near Marseille on the Mediterranean for years. All around exactly what you need for tough test statements: winding country roads, tricky pass descents, grippy asphalt, hardly any traffic. The advantages and disadvantages of the individual items of clothing are also quickly apparent. For example, when the protectors no longer sit exactly due to the constant repositioning, the collar pinches and head movements restrict or the trousers do not provide proper support on the bench. Let’s get to bad weather protection: At this time of the day, rain is usually in short supply on the edge of the Côte d’Azur. In any case, it is important to check all suits according to a uniform and comparable standard. Our hardcore rain simulation has therefore proven itself for years. Each complete set is properly maltreated for five minutes with a high-pressure cleaner in order to detect weak points in the material or construction. The load can be compared to an hour’s drive in the rain at a recommended motorway speed. In the dry test, all suits are dissected again, the protector equipment is checked and statements about quality and design are made.

Conclusion

Wanted: an all-weather sports suit in a medium price range for brisk rides on naked bikes, touring or super athletes. We found some that fit particularly well depending on your preference. Across the board, the Rev’it Vapor received the best marks of all testers. Above all, it impresses with its crisp seat, high-quality structure and many details that are suitable for motorcycles. Can he get any better? Of course – if a CE-compliant back protector is added to the equipment. The Difi combination, which does without the (expensive) Gore-Tex membrane, but still remains wind- and waterproof in our test, stands out from the broad chasing field. Our buying tip for budget-conscious motorcyclists.
