The statistics don’t lie
This is the average German biker

The advertising of motorcycle manufacturers predominantly praises the young, dynamic, male biker. A look at the statistics paints a different picture of the biker.

Motorcycling is back in fashion – at least that’s what the registration figures from 2020 show. Bold plus signs are everywhere. 131,410 newly registered motorcycles mean an increase of 17.2 percent. 35,853 newly registered light motorcycles mean an increase of 77.5 percent. In addition, the light scooters increased by 107.6 percent to 28,034 new registrations. Even the scooters increased by 2.4 percent to 16,728 new registrations.

The old men dominate

But who are the drivers behind these numbers? Statistics also provide information on this. Let us first take a look at the motorcyclists, assuming that the owners are actually the drivers. And of course, all groups contain men and women, respectively. The overall motorcycle market in 2020 is divided into 73.5 percent men and 10.6 percent women – the rest is made up of new commercial registrations. The majority of the new registrations brought the age group between 50 and 59 years on the streets. There are 40,312 new registrations (36.5%) here. The second largest age group are 40 to 49 year olds with 20,768 new registrations (18.8%). Only now are motorcyclists under 30 following with 18,375 new registrations (16.6%). The fourth force is made up of those over 60 with 16,210 new registrations (14.7%). The age group between 30 and 39 brings up the rear with 14,802 new registrations (13.4%).

Enduros and naked bikes preferred

It is also revealing which segments motorcyclists are in. All-rounder / naked bikes are absolutely dominant with 48,374 new registrations. The second largest community is bundled with 35,831 new registrations for enduros / supermotos, whereby the focus should be clearly on enduro. Choppers / cruisers were the first choice for 14,233 bikers. The athlete / super athlete segment can boast 6,184 new registrations. The tourer / sports tourer group brings up the rear with 4,635 new registrations.

Much performance required

Finally, we take a look at the distribution according to performance classes. Apart from the chopper / cruiser segment, purchases are predominantly made in the class over 100 hp. The majority of chopper / cruiser buyers remain just below this threshold.

Summary: The average German motorcyclist is between 50 and 59 years old and sits on an enduro or naked bike with over 100 hp. If you have a BMW GS driver or a Kawasaki Z900 driver in mind, you are not as wrong as looking at them Top 50 new registrations indicates.

The old ones also dominate the 125cc classes

A quick look at the 125cc class, which is traditionally seen as the entry-level class for the youngsters. The light motorcycles did not attract the young bikers in 2020, but rather the silver curls. Around 62 percent of light motorcycle buyers were between 40 and 60 years old. In the case of 125 scooters, almost 83 percent of the new registrations are for owners over 40 years of age.

This is where the new B196 regulation comes through, allowing drivers to switch to two-wheelers more easily. Another aspect could be that the old buy for the young and just stand as a holder in the papers.

opinion poll

Do you know someone who, thanks to the new driving license regulation, has got a 125cc??

Voted 5751 times

Yes, of course, myself!

Yes, I know someone who took advantage of this opportunity.

No, I don’t know anyone.

Conclusion

Motorcycling in Germany, at least when it comes to new machines, is an old man’s thing. This is probably also related to the high cost of this hobby. Powerful enduros or naked bikes will be ridden. The older vintages are also strong when it comes to the 125cc class. Here the new B196 license lures motorists to two-wheelers.
