Please allow us two preliminary remarks so that our favorite letter writers Horst P. from M. and Dietmar F. from K. do not have to bother unnecessarily. Firstly: Yes, we are well aware that the term “biker” – at least in English-speaking countries – is also used for cyclists. However, if biker glasses are mentioned in the following, only glasses for motorcyclists are meant. More precisely: for motorcyclists who wear a jet helmet.

Which brings us to the second preliminary remark: Yes, we know that there are also (full-face) helmets with a sun visor. But it’s not about glasses that are worn under these helmets, which explains why, in addition to UV protection, we also attached great importance to stone chip and wind protection in this test. Motorcyclists who are interested in the glasses discussed below wear glasses in front of their eyes – and usually nothing else.

Fashion or sports glasses are unsuitable for motorcyclists

So it’s about very special biker sunglasses. And getting it is not that easy far from the relevant motorcycle outfitters, which our information and shopping tour in the greater Stuttgart area revealed in a shockingly clear manner. Because even if one explicitly referred to the suitability for motorized transport by two-wheeler, one ended up in the optician chains and in the sports stores mostly in the fashion or sports glasses department. And there, at best, glasses for cyclists were dug out. But fashion or conventional sports glasses are usually unsuitable for motorcyclists, and that has to do with the material of the glasses, among other things. Even the most inexperienced reader suspects why mineral glass would not be a good choice: Right, glass splinters in the eye are totally stupid. So do we prefer plastic? Of course, it was done for decades without that being particularly bothering.

Acrylic also tolerates suicide wasps and road chippings pretty well, only if something really hard and tasty hits the acrylic at a speed that is well above the recommended speed, the stuff has a decisive disadvantage: it can splinter. This also applies to CR-39, a plastic that is very suitable for sports glasses. Sports glasses in the sense that something unpleasant happens at speeds in the double-digit km / h range, for example when cycling. For such purposes, CR-39 is a great material, which, for example, is clearly superior to the polycarbonate commonly used for helmet visors in some respects. Just not when the glasses are on at really high speed. For situations like this, polycarbonate is still the first choice because it only breaks once and does not splinter.

The tint of the lenses says nothing about UV protection

Before we forget: This story is about sunglasses, so it’s pretty much UV protection too. In the long run, ultraviolet radiation can cause serious damage to the eyes. This then ranges from eye irritation to cataracts to blindness. The tint of the lenses – in the case of plastic lenses, painted in an immersion process – says nothing about the UV protection. The darkest of all sunglasses can be a total failure when it comes to UV protection and even cause additional damage by tricking the pupils into darkness, opening them wide and allowing even more harmful UV light to pass through. And there are also clear lenses that look like reading glasses and still provide full UV protection. Those who buy from even halfway reputable sources are usually on the safe side when it comes to minimum UV protection, which this test also confirms: All test participants master the UV test (380 nanometers) without any complaints and belong to EU category 3 (82 to 92 percent light absorption).

In the UV test, however, only what comes directly through the lens is checked, or not. Anything that sneaks past as scattered light on the left and right as well as up and down in the direction of the eye is not recorded. And where light comes through, air usually has an easy job too. Drafts! A really good biker sunglasses should therefore lock well all around, of course without pressing. Not an easy task, but at least the test candidates rated “very good” clearly show that it can be mastered.

The best UV and wind protection is of course of little use if the optical quality is not right and the environment can only be perceived in a distorted manner. A very sensitive topic, because while the UV protection is usually good even with cheap models, the optical quality of sunglasses is by no means a matter of course. But at least for this test, the all-clear can be given: All test candidates, even the otherwise rather rustic U-five-euro part, correctly depict everything that comes to their wearers’ eyes. And when it comes to color impression, there are no outliers either. With brown, gray or preferably gray-green tinted glasses you are on the safe side anyway. Red is unsuitable for use in traffic, and yellow, which some “experts” praise as enhancing contrast, is only suitable if the red component is not too high. You can turn the subject of sunglasses into a science, and you can easily spend a lot more than the 100 euros set as the limit for this test. Or you can take a closer look at the product boxes and, above all, the final rating table. To find a very good sun blocker for motorized bikers, that should be enough.

This is how MOTORRAD tests

Sunglasses for motorcyclists in the test

Herder

At the doctor: In the Dr. Hartmut Hauber (left) and Dr. Mario force the glasses steam.

Totally windy affair

MOTORRAD bought the 13 test sunglasses in June 2014 in the greater Stuttgart area from motorcycle accessory chains and specialist retailers. Then it went to the laboratory of cleaning agent expert Dr. Wack to Ingolstadt, where two chemists dedicated themselves to the test points cleaning agent resistance, scratch resistance and fogging tendency. The points awarded for this can be found in the final scoring table under the heading “Laboratory”.

Back in Stuttgart, I went to see master optician Thomas Hommerberg from Kraft Augenoptik, who checked the glasses for UV protection, optical quality and workmanship. Most recently, the practical test in the north of the republic was announced: Under a (matt black!) Bandit open face helmet, a 1200 Harley-Davidson Sportster guaranteed to be free of windshields went on a test drive. In order to be able to verify the draft shield even better, a Hitachi blower was also used in the test workshop.

Interview with the optician

Sunglasses for motorcyclists in the test

Herder

MOTORRAD spoke to master optician Thomas Hommerberg (34) from the Stuttgart company Kraft Augenoptik, who was significantly involved in this test.

What do you think of our test field – surprises?

Probably not, that’s exactly what I expected: no wonder, but at least solid performance in terms of UV protection and optical quality.

Do you even have problems with UV protection in your practice??

No, even the cheapest models from a reasonably reputable source – not necessarily from the funny beach vendor on Malle – have UV protection. The differences are more in the optical quality.

At which parts of a pair of glasses do you notice differences in quality the most??

For example on the hinges. In inexpensive models, they are usually only attached with screws that cut directly into the plastic. Nothing can be adjusted here, and wear and tear is high. If there is tension on it, the matter wears out and the screw falls out at some point. The design of the nose pad (angle, contact surface) can also say something about the quality. In the case of lens glasses, the sharpness (if possible, nonexistent) reveals something about whether the glasses manufacturer attaches great importance to quality. And last but not least, the availability of spare parts is an indicator. For really good and unfortunately often correspondingly expensive glasses, practically every component can be bought separately.

Topic protection against falling rocks: What would you recommend to your motorcycling customers?
Clearly: polycarbonate for the glasses, because nothing can splinter there. And at least as important: a very good fit of the glasses so that the eyes are really covered permanently.

In your opinion, how much do you have to spend in order to enjoy (motorcycle-compatible) sunglasses over the long term?

With a little service around it (hard case, availability of spare parts), the happiness of sunglasses at the optician starts at just under 160 euros.

Is there a personal favorite for you in our test field? And if so, why?

I really like the Harley-Davidson glasses. The workmanship is right and it finishes nicely.

Final evaluation and conclusion

Conclusion: The (self-proclaimed?) Inventor of the biker sunglasses clears up: Four models from Helbrecht Optics among the

first five – that shows how much motorcyclist know-how the people of Hilden have. Which is all the more gratifying because the leading MC supplier is still offering its glasses at very fair prices. Harley-Davidson proves in the top group that the Americans don’t just pay dearly for the brand name. There are also very good goods for a lot of money. In the rest of the test field, with the exception of the Louis Superbike IDM Edition, there are other decent models, which clearly fall below the top group.
