Under the scorching Adriatic sun, World Supersport Champion Jorg Teuchert opened the hot phase in terms of defending his title in Misano.

Jorg Teuchert had to think for a while. »When was the last time I stood on the front row? I think that was in Assen last September. «In the race, the world champion was able to compete with his Yamaha brand colleague and arch-rival for the Supersport World Championship, Paolo Casoli, and the Scottish Kawasaki factory rider Iain MacPherson from third place on the grid Fix the tip.
And what followed was a demonstration of the strategic superiority of the champion, who had not yet won that year. “Casoli was able to brake extremely late, especially at the end of the back straight,” says Teuchert of the early phase of the heat battle. “To mess with him there would have been very dangerous. When you brake on this slow left-hand bend, you slip quickly. “
So the Franconian was clearly holding back there, deliberately braking relatively early and letting Messrs Casoli and MacPherson feel safe. “But on the penultimate lap you have to be in second position in Misano if you want to win,” explained strategist Teuchert and therefore got serious when braking on the La Quercia bend. Vice world champion and world championship leader Casoli was amazed that »Fruhbremser« Teuchert of all people was suddenly able to force his way past him into second place behind the leading MacPherson.
Of course, the Scot had an inkling of what could happen to him in the final lap. And the premonition should come true. Back at the end of the straight, Frankenstolz grabbed Teuchert MacPherson and drove the last half lap confidently to a victory that was just as tight as it was with a five-hundredth of a second advantage.
Teuchert’s victory, expected by many after the training result, brought the defending champion up to twelve championship points on leaders Casoli. The hot phase of the World Cup duel between the Italian and the German Yamaha star is now open, even if some other competitors are still hoping that they may interfere.
The team boss of the master, ex-racing driver Udo Mark, has already experienced a lot in his own active career. And not to forget the unbelievable season finale last year, when Teuchert, with the help of his teammate Christian Kellner, drove from the forecourt of hell to the world championship title, which many have long written off. But there are also moments of boundless astonishment for the Black Forest. “The Teuchert? he’s awesome, “the team boss searched for words minutes after the Misano victory,” it is hard to believe how Jorg can align a whole race exactly with the result. This includes a mental strength that is second to none. “
Udo Mark also had a surprise ready. After the win he announced his retirement for the end of the season: »I have a three-year contract with Yamaha Germany. It expires at the end of 2001 and will not be extended. I want to look for new tasks in the future, no longer at the forefront of the race track. In addition, private reasons also draw me back to southern Germany. “
However, Jorg Teuchert does not see the successful Wilbers-Yamaha team at risk: “Udo Mark has done an excellent job with the whole team over the past three years. We have to respect if he wants to orient himself differently now. In addition, representatives from Yamaha Germany and the European Yamaha headquarters in Amsterdam have already assured me that the team will remain in place in 2002. And I would also be very interested in continuing to drive for Yamaha. “
Teuchert’s team-mate Christian Kellner was also unable to end his losing streak in Misano, where he won last year. The Bavarian had to give up after a collision with the Italian Suzuki driver Iannuzzo.
The Superbike World Championship races were the safe prey of the two Ducati works teams. In the first run Troy Bayliss dominated in front of his “enemy” brother Ben Bostrom. In the second race, the California Dreamboy turned the tables and won ahead of world championship leader Bayliss. The strong performance of the Spanish Kawasaki rider Gregorio Lavilla was only partially rewarded. In both races he defeated world champion Colin Edwards on the factory Honda in a battle for third place. In the first run, however, Lavilla was relegated to fourth place under the yellow flag due to a controversial overtaking maneuver.

Dreiklang seeks harmony

The acoustic experience alone is unique. The brand new Benelli The Tornado 900-Superbike brings a melodious three-cylinder sound to the rather bitter concert of V2 tractor thunder and row foursome, and the revitalization of the traditional Benelli brand surprises with original details. The futuristic-looking fan wheels at the rear of the pre-series tornado have indeed disappeared from the racing machine. Nevertheless, the Benelli cooling remains unusual. Air ducts lead from slots in the front fairing to the radiator under the seat, and the Benelli frame also has no counterpart in the world of superbikes. The bridge frame consists of cast parts for the steering head and swing arm bearings, which are connected by steel tubes. The 900 series three-cylinder engine with a bore of 88 millimeters and a stroke of 49.2 millimeters, designed as a load-bearing part, currently delivers 165 hp at 13,000 rpm at the rear wheel with a compression of 12.8. As a result, works driver Peter Godard was unable to achieve the Superpole qualification of the fastest 16 on his debut at Misano, as Benelli boss Andrea Merloni had predicted. From starting position 27, however, the veteran moved up to position 16 towards the middle of the race and was only stopped by a defective fuel hose. And even after the crash in the second race, the mood in the Benelli camp wasn’t too bad. Because even if the chassis is not yet perfectly matched to the Tornado’s center of gravity, which is far ahead, and the Benelli may therefore still stress their Dunlop tires too much, the nimble three-series shows definitely expandable systems.
