Suzuki is renovating its large naked bike and giving it significant changes. A first video teaser revealed the first details about the new front in advance. During a digital event, Suzuki now has the new one GSX-S 1000 the proverbial cloth pulled from the new body.

Fresh look

Already seen in the teaser video: small winglets on the long panels next to the radiator and cylinder head of the revised 999 cubic four-cylinder. The newly designed front is dominated by hexagonal projection lenses built on top of one another with LED lighting. Raised LED turn signals frame a new LCD display. A completely redesigned tank with a volume of 19 liters now has a significantly more angular design and is complemented by angular and aggressively shaped panels towards the radiator and fork towards the front and bottom. The rear is a bit shorter and slimmer, which explains the optical effect of a lift. The slimming down at the rear also requires a narrower seat. The handlebars, which are 23 millimeters wider and 20 millimeters closer to the driver, bring a more upright sitting position.

K5 engine has to work again

The technical basis of the new S-Gixxer is the GSX-S 1000 from previous years. The tried and tested quad with 999 cubic meters once made its debut in the K5, and has always been lovingly cared for and further developed. Euro-5 again demanded a lot from Suzuki technically, which led to upgrades, especially on the moving parts of the engine: The 16 valves are still opened by new camshafts with less lift and less overlap via bucket tappets. New valve springs take over the countermovement. The cylinder head is supplemented by a new secondary air system, which improves the cold start behavior and favors the heating of the now two catalytic converters.

Combustion chambers with a bore of 73.4 millimeters are fed by a new injection system and a new airbox, the mixture of which is compressed 12.2: 1 by the well-known stroke of 59 millimeters. This results in an output of 152 hp at 11,000 rpm – two more and 1,000 rpm higher than before. The maximum torque drops by two Newton meters to 106, which is now 250 revs earlier at 9,250 tours. Accompanied by a new Assist Slipper Clutch, tailored to the new Quickshifter with blipper function. For Suzuki, it is not important to look at the pure peak values, but rather at the course of the performance curve: if the Euro 4 version in the mid-rev range is like a mountain-and-valley ride, the Euro 5 configuration is much more linear with a noticeably smoothed one Curve through.

Electronics refined

In terms of electronics, Suzuki is refining the familiar systems. The only innovations are the mentioned Quickshifter, which has not been searched for so far, as well as three selectable throttle valve mappings, which only control the throttle valve response, but do not limit the maximum performance. Although ABS and traction control – now in five stages – have been revised, systems that are sensitive to lean angles are still missing.

Chassis endures

In terms of driving dynamics, there is little reason to change the chassis. Kayaba’s USD fork still has a diameter of 43 millimeters and, like the shock absorber in the rear, is fully adjustable. Roadsport 2 from Dunlop in the also known dimensions 120/70 ZR17 at the front and 190/50 ZR 17 at the rear are now rotating on the cast rims. The brake system with M4-32 calipers from Brembo at the front continues to bite into discs with a diameter of 310 millimeters.

The new tank is two liters larger. Together with the new catalytic converter and the other changes, the result is a weight of 241 kilograms, ready to drive.

Prices, colors and weight

Suzuki specifies a ready-to-drive weight of 214 kilograms for the new GSX-S 1000. These probably result from the two-liter larger tank and the significantly larger catalytic converter. From the end of June, Suzuki would like to be able to offer the new GSX-S in the colors Metallic Triton Blue, Glass Mat Mechanical Gray and Glass Sparkle Black at a price of 12,900 euros.

Conclusion

Suzuki revised the GSX-S 1000 extensively. The new naked bike is unlikely to roll to customers until late in the year or even in the 2022 season.
