  • Less performance and more consumption

  • Colors, prices and availability
  • Conclusion

2,500 euros and a maximum of 104 hp less are two of the most important pillars in the comparison of the new Suzuki GSX-S 950 and the gene donor, the also new Suzuki GSX-S 1000 S.. Fast calculators know: The 48 HP, or 95 HP, which can be dethrottled later, cost 10,400 euros plus transfer.

Looks like the 1000s

In terms of design, little changes with the 950. It also got the new design, that MOTORRAD editor-in-chief Uwe Seitz described this in the driving report of the 1000 series: “After yawning for years, they seem to have awakened from a deep slumber in Hamamatsu. And given the styling of the new GSX-S, you rub your eyes almost in disbelief.” The only thing missing is one or the other graphic detail of the large S in the two lacquer versions of the 950 series.

Less performance and more consumption

Fully filled with 999 cubic meters, the four-in-a-row stays in the aluminum frame. For approval as an A2 motorcycle, however, a maximum of 95 unthrottled horses may trot. From 152 HP on 11,000 tours of the 1000 series, 48 and later 95 HP remain in the 950 series – if you dethrottle it for a fee. Significantly fewer losses are on the torque side: if the 1000 presses a good 106 Nm at 9,250 rpm, the 95 PS version still pushes 92 Nm at 6,500 rpm via a slightly shorter primary drive into the six-speed gearbox. And even with this power, the 48-hp version can still deliver a powerful 76 Nm at 3,250 tours. For the sake of completeness: The throttled 48 hp are at 6,100 tours, with which the Suzuki GSX-S 950 should still run over 160 km / h. Interesting: the version with 48 HP consumes at 6.1 liters per 100 kilometers 0.8 liters more than the 1000 and emits at 143 g / km a good 17 percent more CO² than the engine with open power. With this consumption, a range of 311 kilometers is theoretically possible with a 19-liter tank capacity.

Downgrade chassis

In terms of chassis, Suzuki has swapped the silver cutlery for cheaper goods in line with the reduced performance. If the 1000cc fork can still be fully adjustable, the Suzuki GSX-S 950 is equipped with a non-adjustable USD fork with 120 millimeters of spring travel. The central spring strut in the swing arm offers 130 millimeters of spring travel, with at least the spring preload being adjustable. Significantly changed: the brake. If Brembo stoppers bite into the three discs of the big S, Tokico’s brakes slow down the 950s. Also hinged radially at the front and the brake discs remain the same in diameter at 310 millimeters at the front and 250 millimeters at the rear. The geometrical data are the same in both versions: 65 degrees steering head angle results in 100 millimeters of caster, weight per 214 kilos ready to drive. Also known: the dimensions of the tires with 120/70 ZR17 at the front and 190/50 ZR 17 at the rear.

Big comfort package

Full hut in terms of comfort and safety. In this area, the new Suzuki GSX-S 950 takes over the package almost unchanged from the 1000 version. Including the Assist and Slipper Clutch with a cable pull, the “only” three-way adjustable traction control, as well as the well-known Easy-Start-System and the increase of the idle speed for easier starting. The striking LED headlights at the front and the LED rear light also come from the large S. Slight changes in the rest of the lighting: The GSX-S 950 flashes halogen. Waiver is also practiced in the driving modes of the 1000 series. Bearable, given the low performance of the quad in the A2 variant in a direct comparison. The quickshifter of the GSX-S 1000 S would have been an interesting move, but Suzuki doesn’t make it. There was a tie in the digital cockpit that the GSX-S 950 took over from the 1000, with a few changes in the variety of displays.

Colors, prices and availability

The Suzuki GSX-S950 is available in two colors, Metallic Triton Blue and Metallic Matt Black. In Germany, the A2-compatible Suzuki will be available from authorized dealers for 10,400 euros from mid-September.

Conclusion

Interesting move from Suzuki. The new GSX-S 1000 S, which has just been introduced, is being expanded to include an A2-compatible variant. The engine is throttled to 48 hp and can later produce up to 95 hp. With slight changes to the chassis and equipment, the GSX-S 950, which looks like a lot of motorcycle, can be bought for just over 10,000 euros. 20 percent cheaper than the 1000 with 152 hp.
