What do you do when you are not allowed to drive as a racing team for a year? You build a very special katana around a real superbike.

The Suzuki Classic team is behind the racing activities of Suzuki in historic motorsport. Due to the corona lockdown, the team based in Great Britain was largely doomed to inactivity. However, the team was not inactive. The unplanned break was used to build a street version of the successful Suzuki Katana Classic racing motorcycle. It has now been presented.

The Suzuki Classic team has already been successful in the European Classic Endurance Championship. Among other things, it will bring class victory to Oschersleben. So what could be more natural than to create a road project from this racing bike.

Superbike racer as the basis

The heart of the new Katana, however, is a GSX-R 1000 from 2008. Not an off-the-shelf bike, but an ex-use machine for the Superbike World Championship from the Alstare team. On board are a special exhaust system, large factory coolers for oil and water as well as corresponding pipes made of aluminum. The on-board electronics rely on a racing control center from Yoshimura. The complete package delivers 200 hp – on the rear wheel. The main frame of the racing machine was also adopted.

Noble attachments

Since the katana should also look like a katana, the swing arm and rear frame had to give way. The rear wheel now has a specially made aluminum swing arm made of box profiles with beams. A new rear frame extends under the katana-look seat. High-quality Ohlins stereo struts are now stretched between the two – a setup that is also used by the original katana.

When it comes to the gear train, the Suzuki Classic team reaches out to the shelves. The Dymag CH3 wheels with the classic look made of magnesium can also be found in the XR69 replica machines from the British. The modern braking system is made up of the finest Brembo components. The rear brake caliper disappears almost invisibly behind the swing arm and ensures a cleaner look at the rear.

Visually trimmed to Katana

The aluminum footrest system has been completely redeveloped. A darkened LED light, which was integrated into a bench seat that was born as a racing hump, ensures a tidy rear end. Further modifications ensure a clean connection to the GSX-R tank. At the front, the new katana pushes an original fairing through the airflow. In order to accommodate the modern LED headlights and to create clean connections to the tank, however, it was significantly widened. Carbon winglets on the sides have been adapted as highlights. A large front spoiler completes the cladding ensemble.

The Katana appearance is rounded off by a Katana logo embroidered on the seat, as well as painted Katana logos on the flanks and painted Suzuki lettering on the tank. Team Suzuki Classic lettering on the hump should also not be missing.

And what will happen to this fabulously made katana? The Suzuki Classic team leaves that open.
