Small things like the tire pressure are fundamental: Before the first exit, this should be checked and adjusted to the correct value. Don’t forget: screw the valve caps back on.

Mental preparation for the start of the season

The motorcycle scene is in the starting blocks and waits for the first mild breeze. But before you quickly plunge into pleasure, the first thing to do is to shake off the rust of the harsh winter.

Meter-high snow and icy temperatures have given us a strict diet this winter, which led to serious withdrawal symptoms for many motorcycle freaks. But now we finally start again: Saddled up, the tank still full to the brim from the winter, the route still leads to the petrol station first, because the tires usually lose a lot of air pressure after long breaks. No, don’t postpone it to the next refueling stop – do it now.

Anyone who has driven a car for a few months has to revive their motorcycle reflexes.

The old sprint brake test is a good exercise so that the eye and mind can master the braking process again from the sprint. In this case, the vehicle accelerates vigorously to around 80 to 100 km / h on a clearly laid-out section of road with little traffic or on an official training area, in order to then immediately apply the brakes. In this interplay, you train your fine mechanical coordination as well as your feeling for the right braking point. Of course, the focus is on the optimally dosed front brake, where you carefully build up the maximum brake pressure with the clutch pulled. If the tires are heated to lukewarm, you can venture to the blocking limit or to a slightly lifted rear wheel. The rear wheel can also be briefly overbraked in order to get a feel for the erupting rear end.

If you are on the road with ABS, it is much easier with your electronic helpers, but you should definitely keep fit with the same exercises and work your way up to the control range to the physical limit.

Eye guidance, lean angle, steering impulses: get back your basics for motorcycling.

You shouldn’t believe it, but the exercises at walking pace alone train the sense of balance sustainably. The basic exercise: turning in the tightest of spaces, if you can do it, even at the steering stop. The motorcycle is gently pushed towards the inside of the bend and the speed is regulated using the clutch, accelerator and light use of the rear brake. Speed well below ten km / h.

The next step on a suitable practice area: The eight, which practically combines a turning exercise from left to right bend with a short acceleration. The curve vertices are marked with pylons or clearly visible objects (plastic bottles, etc.). Be careful not to cramp up, turn your upper body parallel to the steering when turning, balance the machine from your hips and do not immediately put your foot on the ground to support it. If there is enough space, the curves can also be used to get used to the inclined position again in a targeted manner.

On the first exit on the house route, you should work your way up to the incline and cornering speed step by step. Only the visual guidance required for smooth cornering has been lost over the winter and the many kilometers in the car, apart from a small remainder, and must be consciously trained, also in connection with a slightly inclined position of the upper body and head. The same applies to the ideal line, with the safe undercutting of curves and the effective use of the right side of the lane.

It’s good when signs warn of the danger. Even better if you observe the road conditions closely yourself.

Last year, the house route was permanently burned into the memory with all its difficulties and pitfalls, but now it has to be scouted out again with great care. The increased use of chippings alone ensures that the side edges will still be covered with a thick layer of chippings for the next few weeks. It is important to be careful when turning in and when accelerating out of the apex.

An entirely different kind of danger is the assessment of one’s own driving ability and routine: Unfortunately, the strikingly high number of accidents on the first nice days of the year speak for themselves. The first trips are about rebuilding your rhythm and your safety. And that doesn’t work with a crowbar and suicidal risk, but with the knowledge that all technical sports, whether mountain biking, climbing or surfing, have to be trained regularly. Riding a motorcycle is no exception, but a prime example of the need for maximum concentration and coordination.

Take your time for this workout. If daily stages of 500 kilometers of country roads were not an issue last year, the first excursions should be halved and the breaks doubled; because stopping in between gives you the opportunity to reconsider the driving line, inclination, mistakes, uncertainties or overconfidence. This also includes the critical handling of the so-called flow, a noise-like state that occurs in many dynamic sports and sometimes amounts to a loss of reality. In racing this can lead to astonishing achievements, on the country road you should bring yourself back to reality by taking a targeted break before reality does it in its own way.

In addition to overconfidence, the new season can also be accompanied by a mostly unfounded fear. One shies away from higher speeds, brakes for no apparent reason, only drives slowly on slopes and loses driving pleasure with every wobbly curve that is rounded. Then the basic exercises mentioned at the beginning are particularly important. In addition, you should get used to a higher speed step by step on a motorway with little traffic, as the feeling for speed at the beginning of the season can often be unfamiliar and unrealistic and disconnected under the restrictive helmet. In such cases only patient practice and slow approach to the old skills will help.

Just as the motorcyclist has to get used to the new season, other road users have to familiarize themselves with the narrow silhouettes of the two-wheelers. That is why the red alert applies when overtaking, at intersections, on oncoming left-turns and for all agricultural vehicles. Always expect that others will not expect you. With that in mind, have fun, take your time, the season is long.
