There are now dozens of products for sale as motorcycle backpacks on the market. Following a trend in recent years to carry your belongings on your back instead of on a motorcycle. The reasons for this are diverse. In particular, sporty machines offer hardly any storage space under the bench or a luggage rack, many drivers need extra storage space in addition to the suitcases for quickly accessible items (digital camera, drink, etc.), and the daypack itself has become socially acceptable and is now used as a school satchel. Work or shopping bag. “The acceptance as universal luggage has grown, and the backpack has long since freed itself from the outdated image of the Wandervogel. Sensitive things like a laptop are also better stored on the back than shaken in the top case. A purchase argument for many motorcyclists, ”explains Kay Blanke von Louis in Hamburg, Europe’s largest supplier of motorcycle accessories.

Louis has almost 20 corresponding products in its range: from ten to 30 liters, from 15 to 100 euros, the top sellers sell thousands of times. Motorcycle luggage specialist SW-Motech in Rauschenberg, Hesse, is also increasingly relying on daypacks.

Doesn’t bother in the cockpit area

Marketing manager Pamela Stephens still sees (Quicklock) tank bags as the core business, but: “There are many drivers who want the cockpit area completely free. And daypacks offer more storage space and better formats, for example for A4 documents. ”Because sales of waterproof roll-up backpacks in particular have risen sharply in recent years, the range was recently expanded to include another model, the Triton. Incidentally, he had to be measured in this comparison as well as nine other candidates.

Ten daypacks up to 100 euros in the test

Jahn

Test editor Thorsten Dentges (41) has only relied on official material for backpacks since the boy scout days.

They say you don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. Seen in this way, there is nothing to complain about about the nice little daypacks that are sometimes cheered on as a promotional gift, right? As a motorcyclist, I say: hands off these cheap and hardly reliable goods! Dear people, do some decent stuff!

This product test shows that you don’t even have to spend a lot of money. If I am traveling with my moped on the motorway at significantly more than the recommended speed and then a material that is not equipped for such situations fails, I get annoyed. That is why I have already lost important family photos, a colleague his expensive watch, which was stowed in an inadequately secured compartment. In addition, cheap backpacks made of thin textile are often the purest fluttering men when flying low over the asphalt – in the long run, not without, because these avoidable aerodynamic turbulence is a drain on your stamina. Designated motorcycle daypacks should be able to withstand high speeds – if in doubt, try them out fully packed and check for yourself whether they are worth the price.

This is how MOTORRAD tests

Ten daypacks up to 100 euros in the test

Dentges

One opinion is not enough: in “dry tests”, wetness and driving tests, the testers uncovered annoyances and clever details.

Is it stuck or stuck somewhere? Does the division of subjects make sense in everyday life? How dry does the contents stay when the backpack sees water and does the whole body flutter on the expressway at full speed? First, various testers took a close look at the ten daypacks, examined the material and workmanship. With standard packaging weighing around five kilograms (day tour requirements: replacement gloves, thermal lining from a textile suit, sweater, provisions, camera and wallet), each candidate went on a varied, extensive country road circuit followed by a high-speed test. At 180 km / h it quickly became clear whether the daypack was sitting well and firmly on the back and how aerodynamically it was in the wind.

In addition, strengths and weaknesses were revealed in terms of fit and comfort. In the wetness test, the rucksacks had to withstand a jet of steam equivalent to heavy rain with a wind from a defined distance for several minutes.

Final scoring

Ten daypacks up to 100 euros in the test

archive

The final score.

Good for savers: Apparently daypacks around 50 euros keep up well with twice as expensive. The concept comparison of classic daypacks with a compartment system and rain cover versus waterproof roll bags with a carrier system is also exciting. Touratech and Givi sent representatives of the first category into the race – the test win and grade “very good” speak for themselves. These daypacks offer the highest level of comfort and flexibility and are also great for excursions on foot.

Rollsacks are more simply knitted, but offer good moisture protection and great packing volume. With fair prices (Held, Gericke, Polo), they are recommended for pure motorcycle trips.
