The Dutch Superbike team has filed for bankruptcy – and wants compensation: Honda is to blame for the bankruptcy, according to the team, because the Japanese terminated their long-term cooperation all too suddenly.

Anyone who knows racing knows Ten Kate: The Dutch team has been racing a Honda in the Superbike and Supersport World Championships for 18 years, without official factory support, but in close cooperation with the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer. In 2019, Honda will return to the racing series with a real works team, but will not work with Ten Kate, but with Moriwaki Engineering and the Italian Althea team.

2007 the last title win

This is not entirely unexpected for observers, because the two brothers Gerrit and Roland Ten Kate have had to struggle with many problems in recent years, their last title win in the Superbike World Championship dates back to 2007 with driver James Toseland. In the Supersport World Championship, the Dutch team won nine titles, but here too the last success was a few years ago: It was achieved in 2014 with Michael van der Mark. In 2018, Ten Kate pilots Leon Camier and Jake Gagne landed in twelfth and 17th places.

Leon Camier finished 12th overall in 2018.

In a statement, Ten Kate now blames Honda for the bankruptcy. The team was only informed about the Honda plans with Moriwaki Engineering and Althea on October 30th – much too late to negotiate with other manufacturers about the next season. At the last race of the season in Qatar on October 27th, so it is said, the cooperation between Ten Kate and Honda was “business as usual”. Among other things, they talked about winter tests in detail.

Honda has not commented yet

The team now wants to take legal action against Honda, but emphasizes that only the racing activities are affected by the bankruptcy. The brothers apparently want to continue their Honda dealership in Nieuwleusen, the Netherlands, and their Honda-based engine tuning. They also announced that they would return to the Superbike World Championship with a new team in 2020 at the latest. Honda has so far abstained from commenting on the Ten Kate team’s statement.
