If you have the most modern and successful single far and wide in your program, which up to now has also lacked real competition, you could rest on your laurels with relish. So far, BMW has not done so, but has been intensively involved

?? be it pollutant emissions, fuel consumption or responsiveness ?? to keep improving. With great success. The single cylinder is said to have been optimized again for the 2004 model year.
This time, however, the Bavarians not only lend a hand to the three-dimensional world of the maps, but also
to the hardware. BMS-CII ?? A more powerful engine management system with a faster computer resides under this pseudonym, while the most obvious innovation can be found in the top right of the cylinder head. There, in addition to the spark plug placed in the center of the combustion chamber, a second one now sets fire to the mixture. Not entirely new, admittedly, because the first F-650 generation already trusted in the power of two sparks. Nevertheless: BMW promises significantly lower pollutant emissions, better throttle response and a further reduction in the already very low fuel consumption.
The revised engine in the familiar chassis of the F 650 CS, which apart from a few changes in the
Detail ?? adjustable clutch lever, standard socket, modified indicator switch, black plastic parts ?? the old one remained. Extremely handy, low seat height, integrated tank bag and, recently, optionally with a top case: the CS is a real one
City runabout. The second spark plug doesn’t change that either.
Neither does the basic character of the Rotax single cylinder. He continues to claim a very well-groomed single existence. According to the homologation, the pollutant values ​​are again significantly reduced, so that the engine is well equipped even for times according to the Euro 2 standard. In terms of gasoline consumption, the Bavarians promise minus six percent
Tempo 90, minus 14 percent at Tempo 120. In the MOTORRAD country road cycle, the difference was close to the limit of the measurement tolerance, 3.6 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers of the Twin Spark contrasted with the already very good 3.7 liters of the old CS.
But not everything got better with the second candle. While BMW speaks of identical power and torque values, with the maximum torque even slightly earlier
should occur, the MOTORRAD test bench attests slightly worse values ​​in both areas, over the entire speed range (see
Diagram). The peak performance decreased from 54.3 to 52.8 hp, that
maximum torque by two Newton meters from 61.4 to 59.4.
A fact that is subjectively mainly due to a
noticeably more lethargic when starting from the lower rev range, but objectively expresses itself in significantly poorer measured values. The new one needs 0.4 seconds more from zero to 100 km / h, up to 140 km / h it is 1.2. When pulling through, it takes 0.8 seconds more time from 60 to 100 km / h, and one second from 100 to 140 km / h. A result for which no technical explanation can be found.
Anyway, single-cylinder fans can safely live with it, especially since the CS engine is still one of the very fixed of its
Genus counts. And to the sociable ones, which, with the exception of typical single shaking attacks below 2500 rpm, are not to be blamed for any vice. Therefore, the BMW motto for the future is likely to be: Single-cylinder is still possible.
