City slippers in comparison

Casual with the motorcycle to stroll through town. But what kind of shoes? Sneakers or vintage boots – which concept works best with motorcycle city boots? 11 shoes in comparison.

Thorsten Dentges

“Only real motorcycle boots belong on the driver’s feet, period. Everything else is far too dangerous!” Yes, that’s right. But now back to everyday motorcycle life: Not everyone puts on exemplary motorcycle boots for a short trip into the city or the neighboring village. Many reach for light sneakers or comfortable and worn out lace-up boots.

minus: Heavy weight for sneakers; Toe box only moderately reinforced; not very rainproof due to perforation even with small showers

Conclusion: A fairly safe motorcycle (short) boot that is certified according to the standard, and at the same time a comfortable trainer. The BMW Ride manages this difficult balancing act. The shoe is neat on short tours and great in everyday life.

MOTORRAD verdict: very good

minus: At temperatures above 20 ° C, the heat builds up in the shoe when walking and in the office, too heavy on the foot for long walks; Shaft reaches high and rubs on the shin without long socks; Torsional stiffness of the sole is sufficient, but could be better

Conclusion: Looks like a motorcycle boot and is certified as such. The only thing that makes the BMW Urban a city shoe is its comfortably rolling sole and its timelessly elegant exterior. Great quality, but also expensive.

MOTORRAD verdict: good

minus: Extremely difficult entry, only put on with great emphasis or a shoehorn; Inharmonious fit, sufficiently long depending on the size of the tester, but much too narrow, unsuitable for normal and slightly wider foot shapes because of excessive pressure points in the forefoot area; Toe box not reinforced; Indoor climate rather sweaty from 20 ° C, low breathability; oily leather equipment rubs off

Conclusion: In itself a good and relatively safe motorcycle sneaker with good features and a chic design. When it came to the fit, the shoemakers of the Dainese Street Rockers, however, is phenomenally wrong. It pinches and pinches badly.

MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory

minus: Somewhat spongy, indifferent feeling when switching; sweaty climate in the shoe quickly when walking long distances and when the air is in the office; high weight; Sole not particularly rigid; Processing partly only moderate

Conclusion: The Difi Vintage makes old-school hiking boots. Shift protection, shoelace strap and coarse-grain leather make it look more like a cheap work shoe
works. It doesn’t matter: super comfortable and safe.

MOTORRAD verdict: good

minus: Sole very soft, comparable to conventional sneakers, not very stiff in the ankle area; Much too long laces without extra security, can easily hang onto motorcycle parts; very sweaty in summer heat; when wet, the sole is a bit slippery on notches and levers

Conclusion: Light, quick to put on, fashionable, also equipped with a climate membrane. The whole thing at a bargain price. Good? No. As a motorcycle shoe is the Germot Fashion vintage too slack. More like a weatherproof sneaker.

MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory

This is how MOTORRAD tests

City boots should be usable on a motorcycle and also on foot. In addition to our usual driving tests on a mountain route that demands a lot of driving dynamics and thus motorcycle-specific foot movements, we also went on extensive city marches with the individual test samples. It showed how easy to roll and how comfortable the shoes are in everyday life. In terms of weather protection, there was no extra wet test; cold and wet protection were assessed (for example, through thick lining, hydrophobic upper material or membrane equipment). In contrast, there was air conditioning for summer, the office and strolling around town. The best balance of weather protection and air conditioning (ventilation, breathable material) scored the most. In addition to the evaluation of the equipment and workmanship, the safety equipment counted above all: Reinforcements, protectors, cushioning, anti-slip protection, torsional stiffness of the sole and abrasion-resistant upper material counted a lot.

A smart looking sneaker wins. Ironically, the one from BMW – from which one hardly expects hip footwear. But Bayern did everything right and combined great security with very good comfort and a fashionable kick. It is surprising that heavy leather but amazingly comfortable vintage boots outperform lighter biker trainers on the three following seats. But which are still very neat. The Modeka shows, however, that a slightly modified casual shoe that offers little security is quickly taken off the hook.

Torsion-resistant soles, reinforcements and protectors

City boots with a climate membrane are also available. Although they can superficially score points in terms of weather protection, they usually only provide an advantage in short rain showers. Because the shoes are seldom cut so high and stowed under weatherproof trousers that water stays outside for a long time. For this comparison, we have therefore dispensed with an extra wetness test. In practice with summery temperatures, the membrane models were found to be weaker in comparison with the indoor climate criterion, so that the equipment advantage in these test candidates sometimes quickly lapsed.

A test mark of the CE standard EN 13634, which is approved by accredited testing institutes such as TuV Rheinland, was more decisive for a good result. This certifies that it is a protective shoe for motorcyclists. This only says something about the actual safety of the city boat to a limited extent, because one can argue about the test criteria. But at least five of the eleven models have a test mark, and the manufacturers are evidently not afraid of an independent tapping of their product in terms of safety.

But city boots that are not certified can also offer good security. In any case, it was noticeable in the test how well thought-out some constructions are. Torsion-resistant soles, reinforcements and protectors in the right places, very solid, abrasion-resistant upper material, tight seams. The shoes may look very civil and fashionable, but a few of them offer more protection than many less cleverly made normal motorcycle boots. So before you start yelling about “Sneakers on the moped, are you crazy?”, It is worth taking a closer look at the shoe. As well as a fitting. Because, surprisingly, some of the most comfortable-looking biker sneakers just failed in the comfort rating. It is understandable that these very short shoes cannot offer the best security. That they spoil a stroll through town is less. Fortunately, the different concepts included a number of city boots that were both: good on foot and good on a motorcycle.
