Original part on the Yamaha YZF-R1 (RN32): The plastic license plate holder weighs only 460 grams, but in the eyes of many owners it looks too bulky and, like the series indicators, is often swapped.

Form follows function. Or the other way around? Actually, it doesn’t matter, because a retrofit license plate holder should be aesthetically pleasing and ensure that the sheet metal does not fly away.

A matter of taste. But serial number plate holders are usually quite low in the beauty hit list of motorcycle parts. Although the manufacturers have been trying hard to create a dainty, crisp and pretty bottom for the motorcycle for a long time, the original part is usually quickly exchanged for retrofit goods. This is also the case with successful athletes Yamaha YZF-R1 of type RN32 (from 2015). The plastic carrier fits well into the line of the compact 1000 series, but looks too bulky for many viewers. Perhaps it’s just the desire for customization that makes license plate holders one of the bestsellers in retrofit parts. They don’t cost the world and can also be attached by hobby screwdrivers.

All systems have mounts for LED mini indicators, which in practice are usually converted at the same time in order to replace the bulky originals. Mountings for serial indicators are often only available as options. Incidentally, the indicators shown were not rated for our test. They are only ornaments for the filigree workpieces made of sheet steel, stainless steel or aluminum that are supposed to hold the license plate. An apparently easy task, but even in this one function, the seven Yamaha YZF-R1 retrofit license plate holders differ. Just looking good isn’t an art yet!

This is how MOTORRAD tests

Test retrofit license plate holder test Yamaha R1

Dentges

During the comparison of the seven license plate carrier systems, the MOTORRAD endurance test R1 was operated on several times. A professional assembly took up to 1.5 hours in the test, depending on the license plate holder.

Although the Yamaha YZF-R1 is mainly moved at a crisp speed, a license plate holder is hardly noticeable in terms of driving dynamics, which is why we have dispensed with driving tests. The attachment and functionality of the retrofit components were more important to us, with the obligatory license plate lighting and reflectors with test marks being handled as a separate test criterion. The weight of the carrier system was also scored, but only plays a minor role with a five percent share of the overall grade. After all, processing and quality of the materials were included in the evaluation with a fifth, because buyers perceive such a wearer more as a piece of jewelry than as a disdainful functional part for the machine. We have therefore literally subjected the surfaces to a hammer-hard treatment to determine how resistant the individual coatings are.

During assembly, the following counted: extent of pre-assembly, clear instructions (if possible with pictures and illustrations), accuracy of fit and cabling (guides available?). After assembly, we evaluated the functionality and all adjustment options. A steeper angle of inclination than 30 degrees is required by law, and the reflector should be almost perpendicular to the road. Is the adjustment range in the green area? And can a proper setting also be safely fixed – ideally even locked? Great. Finally, we checked whether the retrofit part could touch the tire when the motorcycle was fully compressed. Because that would be fatal.

Comment from the chief mechanic

Assembly, child’s play? Certainly for experienced professionals, but laypeople often underestimate the effort. Starts with the connection to the electrical system. Matching plugs or adapters are rarely included with the carrier sets, and there is usually no cable diagram. In any case, insulating tape, simple luster terminals and muddling around are not enough to create permanently reliable and weather-resistant connections.

Furthermore, some wearers have a very large adjustment range, so that an ignoramus can quickly make a mistake. With a steep angle of inclination, for example, the distance between the license plate holder and the rear wheel is sometimes too small. A few centimeters seem to be enough when standing, but when driving, the rear end compresses deeply if there are potholes and the carrier hits the rear wheel – a fall cannot be ruled out as a result. Therefore: Completely compress it beforehand with helpers! In systems without locks, screws can loosen after a while due to vibrations and the carrier rotates downwards. Dangerous. Therefore check all connections regularly!
