Well-ventilated gloves are an effective remedy for sweaty hands on summer motorcycle trips. Nine candidates in the heat test.

Holger Hertneck

08/03/2006

After extreme teething problems with snowfall until mid-April and cold weather until the beginning of June, it finally came: summer. Sun and warmth, finally! It is much more pleasant to drive a motorcycle when the climatic conditions are right. But what are the ideal conditions? Certainly not too cold. But too hot isn’t much more fun either.

Our ancestors already knew that there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing. Just as warm driver equipment protects against the cold in winter, bikers need something airy in summer. But that doesn’t mean a braincap, T-shirt, shorts and flip-flops, but motorcycle-compatible clothing with protectors and ventilation function.

Gloves should also be part of the basic equipment when driving. Never without, is the motto. It goes without saying that models with net-like mesh fabric do not protect as well as full leather protector racing gloves. But even the thinnest finger cots are better than bare skin. MOTORRAD used the hot days during the soccer World Cup to check nine pairs of summer gloves from different manufacturers to find the best compromise between ventilation and safety.

This is how MOTORRAD tests.

Ventilation: This is a prerequisite for a glove that is suitable for summer. The desired cooling effect is only achieved if there is plenty of air to circulate while driving. The differences between the candidates are striking. While at hero Air a cool breeze flows through the mesh from walking pace, that’s what prevails with them polo Breeze even with a calm of over 100 km / h.

Safety: How good is the protective function of the gloves? Do the products have protectors or pads in places at risk of falling? At least the palm of the hand should be made entirely of leather, even in well-ventilated models, in order to offer sufficient resistance to abrasion in the event of an accident. It is also important to have a tight wrist strap that prevents the glove from being unintentionally slipped off in the event of a fall.

Comfort / fit: How well do the gloves fit? Are the fingers trimmed well or are they too short, too long or too far? Pressure points at seam transitions or under the protectors give a deduction. Likewise, if bumps in the fingertips (from the converging seams) interfere with the grip.

Colouration behavior: Even in the most beautiful summer, it can happen that you get into a shower when driving out. Sometimes not that uncomfortable, after all, the rain cools your hands extremely due to the increased evaporation cold caused by the airflow. It’s just stupid if the wet gloves rub off. To test this, MOTORRAD put all test copies in a bucket of water for four hours and then slipped a new pair of thin, white cotton gloves into the various models. After a few minutes of finger gymnastics, it becomes clear whether specimens tend to rub off or not. Extremely nobody rubs off. Only in the Hein Gericke and Polo models did the previously white inner gloves show a somewhat more noticeable tint in comparison.

Processing: How clean are the gloves processed? The lavishly made Rev ?? it were particularly popular.

A good second place for the BLH RS8.

BLH RS8

Plus: very well ventilated; pressure point-free ankle protectors; stable Velcro strap on the wrist; Edge of hand reinforced with leather; Reflective material; hardly rubs off; The grip, fit and workmanship are convincing.

Minus palm made of less abrasion-resistant textile; Thumb slightly too wide; slight nodules in fingertips.

Conclusion: Well-ventilated, well-made, light summer gloves that are actually only missing a leather palm for even more safety? Ankle protectors and Velcro straps are great.

Grand Cayon Mesh Summer

Plus: Noticeable ventilation on the fingers and back of the wrist; Palm made entirely of leather with several doublings of leather; Leather pads on ankle; Velcro strap on cuff; hardly rubs off.

Minus: No Velcro strap on the wrist, therefore poor protection against stripping; thumbs of different lengths; slight nodules in fingertips.

Conclusion: Average processed, pleasantly light finger cots with a high proportion of leather and a slight ventilation function.

Hein Gericke Air

Plus palm made entirely of leather with doubled leather; Velcro strap on cuff; Reflective material
Minus ventilation hardly noticeable; no Velcro strap on the wrist? poor protection against stripping;
comparatively thick and warm; easily cuts into the roots of fingers; poorly processed inside, thus unpleasant scratches; easily rubs off
Conclusion No real summer gloves,
therefor are the ones that are appealing in terms of design
Air got too thick. Since also fit and
Little liked processing, no recommendation

Hero Air

Plus: very well ventilated thanks to the large mesh fabric; Palm made entirely of very soft leather; Ankle pads; Velcro strap on cuff; great fit and great wearing comfort; does not rub off; well processed.

Minus: a Velcro strap on the wrist ?? poor protection against stripping; much too short cuff.

Conclusion: extremely light and comfortable summer gloves with the best ventilation in the test. However, the accident protection is not particularly high.

Third place for the Held Air model.

Ixs Atami

Plus: palm made entirely of leather with several layers of leather; Ankle pads; Velcro strap on cuff; good fit; does not rub off; well processed.

Minus ventilation practically not noticeable; no Velcro strap on the wrist? poor protection against stripping; Lump in fingertips.

Conclusion Looks airy, but it is by no means. The Atami are great everyday gloves, but not a real summer model due to insufficient ventilation.

Orina mesh

Plus: the palm is made entirely of leather with double layers of leather; Ankle pads; Velcro strap on cuff; hardly rubs off.

Minus: only moderately ventilated; no Velcro strap on the wrist? poor protection against stripping; Pressure point at the transition between thumb and back of the hand.

Conclusion: The mediocre processed mesh convey a safe driving experience thanks to the high proportion of leather. Despite the mesh design, the ventilation is comparatively low.

Polo Breeze

Plus: gloves made entirely of leather, backhand perforated; several doublings of leather; Velcro strap on the cuff.

Minus: ventilation practically not noticeable; no Velcro fastener on the wrist, therefore poor protection against stripping; Pressure point on the base of the index finger; easily rubs off.

Conclusion: Basically chic full leather gloves, but with several flaws in detail. There is hardly a breath of wind through the perforated upper leather, as a polyester lining acts as a wind stopper. Unsuitable as an airy summer model.

Probiker Breeze II

Plus: noticeable ventilation; Palm completely, upper hand mostly made of leather ?? partially perforated; Pads on knuckles; Velcro straps on the wrist and cuff, good protection against stripping; Reflective material; hardly rubs off.

Minus: thumbs way too far and too long; generally only moderate fit.

Conclusion: The Breeze II offer the best price-performance ratio. They ventilate properly and still protect well thanks to plenty of leather. However, the Hamburgers can still fine-tune the fit.

Rev’it Solar

Plus: still noticeable ventilation; Palm complete, upper hand largely made of leather, doubled leather; Ankle hard shell protector; Velcro strap on cuff; good fit and great grip; hardly rubs off; very good and elaborately processed.

Test winner: the Rev’it Solar.

The primary requirement when selecting candidates for the summer glove test was good ventilation. That is why there was a maximum of 40 out of 100 points for this criterion. Models that, like the Atami by Ixs or the Polo Breeze, lose up to 32 points in this column alone, inevitably end up behind in the final accounts. If you are looking for waterproof or super-safe gloves, you have to look elsewhere. The perforated, membrane-free test models are not suitable for this. Best compromise: Rev ?? it Solar.
