Admittedly, in view of the bombastic and dust-dry summer of 2003, hardly anyone thinks of moisture protection. But the next rain will definitely come? and then every biker is happy about dry hands. In the MOTORRAD glove test, however, water resistance was only one criterion; another aspect concerned safety. Only those waterproof finger cots that are equipped with the hard shell knuckle protectors made of plastic or carbon, which have long since become fashionable in the sports sector, were tested. Not too many models meet both requirements. After all, eleven candidates met in triplicate (size ten, eleven and twelve or L, XL and XXL) at the beginning of August for a test of strength in Stuttgart.
And measuring forces was actually part of the test program? in the form of a shock absorption test. Since, in contrast to helmets (ECE standard 22.05), joint protectors (CE standard EN 1621-1) and back protectors (CE standard prEN 1621-2), there are no fixed specifications or regulations for the impact test of gloves, MOTORRAD has decided Without further ado, I thought up my own test conditions (see box on page 116).
In addition to shock absorption and watertightness, special attention was paid to the practical suitability, which was checked not least on the basis of extensive driving tests. Because it is only on the motorcycle that you can tell whether the gloves cause uncomfortable pressure points or whether the all-important grip feeling is not satisfied.
The throttle hand is particularly prone to pressure points, as it has to concentrate on pressing the throttle grip while driving and usually resting one or two fingers on the brake lever at the same time. Do not cut it with the fit or cut on the fingers, it pinches and pinches, especially in the area of ​​the roots and tips of the fingers. Therefore, an intensive fitting is essential before buying gloves.

Buy recommendation from friends or acquaintances should trust. Too short fingers turn out to be very uncomfortable with gloves. If the specimens are still sitting satisfactorily with a relaxed hand position, when grasping the handlebars around the fingertips, it is usually too tight and unbearable in the long run.
In this regard, everyone ultimately has to find their own favorite. More important for the practical evaluation in the test were the design of the Velcro strap and cuff, the grip, the finger mobility, the general workmanship, the cuddle factor of the inner lining and the windproofness of the test subjects. All participants fulfilled the latter point without any problems. Waterproof and windproof, however, come at the expense of breathability. For summers like this year, waterproof gloves are only suitable to a limited extent, as they insulate too well due to their membrane.
Another part of the practical test related to the handling when putting on and taking off. Nothing is more annoying than an inner lining that slips out of the gloves when you take it off. The next time the finger cots are put on, it turns into an annoying game of patience. In particular the Spidi falls out of the ordinary due to this bad habit, but also Dainese and Germas tend to. A little tip for buying: moisten your hands slightly and then try to put on and take off the gloves of your choice two or three times in quick succession.
The candidates were able to achieve a maximum of 1000 points in the present glove test. 500 in the practical evaluation, 300 in the wetness test and 200 in the shock absorption. The Tech Road Leather GTX of Alpinestars right at the front, whereby in principle all test copies were more or less convincing. Even the participants in the back third have a good chance of doing better next time through appropriate improvements (e.g. attaching the inner lining or increasing the water resistance).
One last tip at the end: MOTORRAD recommends that gloves that are advertised as waterproof be subjected to a leak test immediately after purchase, for example in a water bucket, and that leaky copies be exchanged immediately at the specialist dealer as part of the guarantee. Because as already mentioned: the next rain is sure to come.

Wetness and laboratory test

Particularly important and highly rated criteria in the MOTORRAD glove test were tightness and good shock absorption properties.

In addition to the practical tests, in which the candidates were able to collect a maximum of 500 points, the scope of the test included two other important criteria: water resistance and shock absorption. Let’s start with the wetness test, which was carried out with two pairs of gloves per participant. First the “immersion test”: With one glove per pair, the tester dipped into a bucket of water up to just over his wrist and tested the tightness for five minutes with constant kneading movements. Earlier leaks led to the termination. The two other gloves per model had to pass the “filling test”. For this purpose, all candidates were hung up with the cuff up and filled with water up to about five centimeters below the edge. Well-made gloves do not show any water droplets on the outside even after the 30-minute test? so hold tight. On the other hand, some candidates were already dripping a few seconds after filling with water, with a maximum of 300 points. That said, for each tight glove there was 75 points. Severely leaking specimens did not receive a point. The Gore Sports from Hein Gericke and the Ceramic Tex model from Held were deducted 30 points for extremely small leaks on one glove. There was a 60 point deduction for the easy water ingress on a specimen of the Hero Edmonton. The second important test criterion was the shock absorption test of the hard shell knuckle protectors. MOTORRAD determined the values ​​with the kind support of Viscotec on their protector test bench. The height of fall for the five-kilogram punch was set at 0.5 meters after appropriate preliminary tests. For the test, the gloves lay on the hemispherical anvil with an integrated force measuring device. Previously, MOTORRAD had to cut the pair of gloves to be tested for each participant in order to be able to fold away the palm of the hand that was not relevant for the impact tests. The test stamp then rushed twice from above onto the ankle protector for each glove. First on the area between the little finger and ring finger and then between the middle finger and index finger. MOTORRAD averaged the four hits per pair of gloves. This average value is decisive for the points scored. Attenuation rating (maximum 200 points): 200 points (P) < 11 kN; 185 P < 14 kN; 170 p < 17 kN; 155 P. < 20 kN; 140 P < 23 kN; 125 P < 26 kN; 110 p< 29 kN; 95 P < 32 kN; 80 p < 35 kN.
