Real touring boots have all-round qualities: They are waterproof, comfortable on the motorcycle and suitable for short walks. Twelve pairs of boots for 200 euros in comparison.

With sports drivers, everything has to be uncompromisingly subordinate to the idea of performance. Skin-tight, one-piece leather suits, ultra-light and tight-fitting full-face helmets, wafer-thin leather gloves with carbon protectors and plastic-reinforced sports boots.
Tour riders are different: Above all, they want comfortable and functional protective equipment. It starts with the two-piece leather suit or driving suit with a functional membrane, goes through reliable, mostly single-colored full-face helmets or a practical flip-up helmet to waterproof leather or textile gloves and, of course, boots suitable for everyday use.
Suitable for everyday use means: waterproof and comfortable, both on the bike and on short trips on foot. And all of this without sacrificing security.
Protectors on the ankles and shins as well as reinforcements on the heels are therefore also very welcome ?? if the mobility does not suffer too much. Because with bone-hard, carbon and plastic armored boots
even the shortest walk is no fun.
How well twelve current leather boots with membrane in the price range around 200 euros meet the requirements of the touring clientele, MOTORRAD extensively tested on land, on water and ?? on the motorcycle. In other words: the test subjects had to ride a bike, for example
prove that they guarantee a firm hold on the footrests or that they can be moved
are enough to enable shifting and braking without exertion. There was also a small hiking trail with asphalt and gravel-
sections on the test criteria. This showed the rolling comfort and whether the soles are grippy enough and damp enough. There was a corresponding deduction for sharp stones that penetrated to the soles of the feet.
Last but not least, MOTORRAD carried out leak tests. In two ways. A pair of the test boots had to survive ten minutes in the paddling pool without water getting in. Another pair was filled with 1.5 liters of water each and was not allowed to show any leaks for an hour. Candidates who survived this test procedure without leakage should keep the driver’s feet dry even in torrential rain showers.
The prerequisite for this is, of course, that it is also waterproof
Pants worn over the boots and not ?? how often to see ?? be stuffed into the boot shafts. In the case of the candidates with laces (Oxtar, Hein Gericke, Triumph), the ends of the shoelaces should also disappear neatly behind the Velcro covers, to the front under the tongue, and not in the boot shaft. Otherwise there is a risk that
the laces lying outside the membrane draw water from below and transport it upwards into the interior via a kind of suction effect.
Finally, a few tips for buying: Feet differ not only in their length and the resulting shoe size. There are wide and narrow feet, high and flat backs of the feet, strong and slender ankles. Only those who take the time to buy and move a few meters with the new kicks can determine whether the cut actually fits and does not cause painful pressure points or blisters. Especially for
For bikers with small feet, the selection is often limited to a few models from the outset, as not every manufacturer has small sizes in their range.
By the way: In contrast to plastic boots, leather touring boots can adapt a little to the shape of the foot. And one more thing: After buying a membrane boot, it’s best to do a leak test (bathtub). And immediately complain about leaky copies and exchange them under guarantee.
