If unusual motifs are desired on helmets or motorcycle parts, then the airbrush specialists are very busy

The handset of the landline phone on one ear and the cell phone on the other is how the author meets the airbrusher Daniel Verleih in his two-and-a-half-room apartment, which also serves as a creative center and studio. In almost every corner between the desk and the refrigerator, there are helmets and motorcycle parts in the most varied of processing stages: sanded, primed, sketched or painted. The trained automotive painter, IT specialist and former Inter-DM-Crosser cannot complain about a lack of orders. “My working day often starts at eight in the morning and doesn’t end until after midnight,” says Daniel, who started airbrushing around 15 years ago as a part-time job – he has only been self-employed for four years. Well over 1000 helmets have wandered through his trained hands since the beginning of his career. All unique pieces – with one exception: the Jordan Formula 1 team recently ordered ten identical helmets.

There are many airbrushers, but only a few professionals

Airbrush is by no means a modern invention. For example, the natives of France relied on air-assisted painting many thousands of years ago – prehistoric rock art is evidence of this. The ancient Chinese also used this technique and painted walls, textiles and other everyday objects with paint applied by blowpipes. Today’s airbrushers use special spray guns into which they pour small amounts of the mostly water-soluble paints. The pressure and jet angle of the air flow can be precisely dosed, and fine or wide lines can be created using different nozzle attachments. Aside from the manual implementation, the motif is of course decisive for an airbrush. And there are no limits to the imagination. As a rule, the image processing takes place first on the PC. There, pre-drawn or copied images and fed in by means of a scanner receive their final dimensions. A plotter then prints out individual stencils, which the airbrusher sticks to the part to be painted and then sprays them with the appropriate colors. Before the first splashes of color, however, the helmet, tank or panel surface must be sanded and primed several times. And after applying the desired motif, the work of art is given a protective film made of resistant clear varnish. Although the average working time for a helmet painting is “only” two days, the entire procedure takes around three weeks. For the final and protective clearcoat layers alone, many days pass with repeated painting, drying and sanding. The prices for individual helmet paintwork for extremely simple motifs sometimes start at a good 200 marks. Interested parties have to invest an average of 400 to 500 marks for quality work. Particularly elaborate helmet designs can even cost up to 1,000 marks. That makes several thousands for a complete motorcycle design. In return, an unmistakable unique piece compensates for this.
