This is how MOTORRAD tests brakes and handling

From the series “This is how MOTORRAD tests”: Spectacular and highly informative – the brake tests before and during the Alpine Masters unmask cheap ABS systems, overburdened floating calipers and chassis that are prone to fading.

“Tell me, Karsten, are you never afraid of the stoppies?” Astonished look from head tester Karsten Schwers, who puts down a whopping 40 brake tests at the Alpine Masters – two with each motorcycle. “No not at all. I just have to open the brakes when the motorcycle climbs. ”In addition, says Karsten, this year, for the first time, all machines at the Alpen Masters have ABS, which makes the brake tests a lot easier for him. At the first Alpine Masters in 2005, things looked very different: only eight of the 20 motorcycles had ABS at the time.

Brakes

The brake tests are spectacular and informative at the same time. Especially since Karsten does not release the brake at the first sign of a stoppie, but calmly waits to see how high the rear wheel rises before he lets the whole load crash back to the ground. The sweat rises on the forehead of many a casual passenger. But the findings are piling up: Does the ABS have a lift detection, or is it a simple variant? How hard does Karsten have to pull on the lever? Is fading occurring? All factors are measured and recorded and converted into points.

Handling

The handling is tested in the fast slalom and the circular path – if possible with a pillion passenger.

The handling is checked just as carefully, initially on the MOTORRAD test site. In the fast slalom and the circular path (see data boxes in the picture gallery) the motorcycles have to show how manoeuvrable they are and how much lean angle they allow when fully loaded. The times and speeds measured are often good indicators of the grades that the machines later get in the practical test in the Alps. The Yamaha Tracer’s brisk march through the fast slalom is reflected in its handiness rating: it scored 17 points, a very good value.

You can also see how MOTORRAD tests the handling in this video. It was created as part of the Alpen Master 2011, but is still up-to-date when it comes to the test prodecere on closed-off terrain.
