Top 20 new motorcycle registrations women 1st half of 2018

The KBA lists around 71,000 new motorcycle registrations for the first half of 2018 in Germany. We looked at how many of them were approved for female owners and which bikes are the most popular among women.

Of the total of 71,000 new registrations from January to June 2018, a total of 54,642 motorcycles were newly registered to private individuals in Germany, split between women and men as follows: 6,542 motorcycles were registered for women, 48,100 for men. The quota of women among new registrations is 11.9 percent after the first half of 2018.

New registrations for women 2015 – 2017

In the same period last year there were 5,925 new motorcycle registrations for women, the rate was 11.6 percent. In 2016, 6,725 units came together in the first half of the year, which also corresponds to 11.6 percent of total registrations to private individuals. In 2015 there were 6,216 copies from January to June. That is 11.4 percent of new registrations to private individuals. The quota of women has thus remained almost constant over the past four years and, at well over ten percent, the female gender is definitely a relevant factor in the motorcycle market.

How old / young are women motorcyclists?

The age group between 50 and 59 years is most strongly represented among women motorcyclists, closely followed by the 40 to 49 year olds. The women up to 29 years of age come with a little gap, followed by women between 30 and 39 years of age, and the end is made by the women aged 60 and over.

New registrations for the two-wheeler market in Germany in the first half of 2018 by age, gender and segments:

Interesting: After motorcycles, the most successful segment is light motorcycles, especially for women between 40 and 49 years of age. Of a total of 9,200 newly registered light motorcycles in the first half of 2018, 17.3 percent were women. In this statistic, KTM 125 Duke, Yamaha MT-125, Honda CBF 125 and Suzuki GSX-S 125 are right at the front.

On the other hand, there is a purely Japanese lead for the “big” motorcycles: Yamaha, Kawasaki, Honda and Suzuki are ahead in the women’s statistics. No wonder – they each have at least one model on offer that is narrow and low, thus ensuring a low seat height and step length. Kawasaki is very successful with two models: Z 650 and Z 900.

On closer inspection, it is noticeable that 17 of the top 20 motorcycles with a displacement of less than 900 cm³ are rolling. Kawasaki Z 900, Harley-Davidson Forty-Eight XL 1200 X and BMW R 1200 GS are the exotic ones in this ranking, with the BMW still being the most successful among them with 6th place. In proportion, with 182 copies out of a total of 3,442 (new registrations to private individuals) in the top 20, however, it is the motorcycle with the lowest proportion of women.

On the other hand, the Yamaha MT-03 (74 out of a total of 219) has more than a third female owners, which makes it into the top 20 women’s motorcycles, but ranks 95th in the overall statistics and thus has the largest difference between of these two rankings.
