From year to year there are more women motorcyclists in Germany. They prefer petite mid-range motorcycles, but Harley’s big GS and Street Bob are also popular.

On average, we’re a bit smaller than men. And on average we have fewer muscles. In the step we also have a little less mass, which we do not compensate with displacement or power. Women motorcyclists in Germany like to sit on more delicate mid-range motorcycles, which is why the Kawasaki Z 650, which is very narrow in the middle (790 mm seat height), lands in first place in the ranking of the most popular women’s motorcycles.

In second place the slightly wider and higher but still quite low Yamaha MT-07 (805 mm seat height) and in third place the Honda Rebel 500, which rolls up with one of the currently lowest seat heights (690 mm).

With the exception of the BMW R 1250 GS (1,254 cm³ displacement; from 850 mm seat height) and the Harley-Davidson Street Bob (1,745 cm³ displacement; 680 mm seat height) no model exceeds the limit of 950 cm³ displacement.

Winners and losers 2019 vs. 2018

The Honda CBR 500 R made up most of the positions compared to the same period of the previous year – it went from 16th to 12th. The Kawasaki Vulcan S crashed from 12th to 19th place. The Yamaha MT-03 has the highest percentage of women among the 20 most popular women’s motorcycles: With 147 out of a total of 343 new registrations, the proportion of women is almost 43 percent.

Percentage of women motorcycling in 2019

The market share of new motorcycle registrations for women has been increasing minimally but constantly for years. In 2019, the market share is 10.4 percent. In 2018 it was 10.2 percent, in 2017 it was 9.7 percent. Expressed in absolute numbers: of a total of 91,855 new registrations to private individuals in 2019, 11,662 of these were to female owners. In 2018 there were 10,809 new motorcycles registered for women, and in 2017 9,693 new motorcycles were registered for women.

Share of women among 125cc bikes

In motorcycles with a displacement of up to 125 cm³, the proportion of women is even 20.1 percent, which corresponds to 4,052 new registrations. In 2018 it was around 19.4 percent market share with 3,450 units, in 2017 the market share with 2,714 new registrations was 18.5 percent. In the previous year (2019), a total of 19,006 light motorcycles were newly registered for private individuals.

12.3 percent share of women in the overall market

The total two-wheeler market consists of motorcycles, light motorcycles, large scooters and light scooters as well as three and light four-wheeled vehicles. This includes a total of 165,496 new registrations in 2019, of which 141,311 are private individuals. 12.3 percent of these, i.e. 20,362 new two-wheelers, were registered for women.
