Motorcycle tours at the highest level

The Black Forest is the largest and highest low mountain range in the republic. The range of curves is fantastic, all conceivable incline experiences are possible here. In addition, there is always a distant view and breaks in picturesque locations. Motorrad names the sportiest, coolest, most hidden and ingenious cornering routes in the stronghold among Germany’s motorcycle districts.

Tour 1: north route

Tour tip: Motorcycling in the Black Forest

Werel

Route length: 325 kilometers; full day tour.

Leave Freiburg in the direction of Offenburg / B 3 and drive with this sign via Gundelfingen to Emmendingen. Then turn right off the B 3. Via Landeck to the municipal association Freiamt and always follow the sign “Schuttertal” to the T-junction after the striking serpentine south of Schuttertal. Here then right to Steinach. The route is almost an insider tip because it is rarely used and very pleasant and varied with a lot of open landscape between small wooded areas. The road babbling lively left-right, an ideal warm-up route. In Steinach am T left to Zell and on to Oberharmersbach.

Then follows a wonderful mountain route into the black forest and steeply up to the Lochberg, before the road drops in just as bold swings into the valley, where you meet the B 28 and follow it right to Bad Peterstal-Griesbach. Then the B 28 leads as a first-class mountain route with well-developed hairpin bends up to a ridge of the Black Forest, from which you turn left onto the B 500 to Baden-Baden, the Schwarzwald-Hohenstrabe. If you want to cruise with pleasure for a while without branches, you can follow the Hohenstrabe for the next 40 kilometers. If you fancy a challenging bend road, after three kilometers you take the junction to the left to Oppenau, which can be reached on a very narrow and wildly curved road in the valley – past the paragliding airfield with a great view. There on the right in the direction of Allerheiligen on an equally challenging route, but mostly limited to 60 km / h (Allerheiligen monastery ruins, see “Worth seeing”).

At the crossroads in the forest after the monastery towards Schwarzwald-Hochstrabe / B 500 and on this left towards Baden-Baden for the next 17 kilometers. Then at the junction “Forbach / Talsperre” right to the B 462, on which it goes nine kilometers to the right through the Murg valley towards Freudenstadt. After leaving Huzenbach, turn left towards B 294 / Freudenstadt / Seewald / Schonegrund on a great mountain route into the next valley to the B 294, on which you turn left towards Pforzheim. Until after passing through Besenfeld (not already in the village) there is a junction on the right to Eisenbach / Gottelfingen / Hochdorf. After a kilometer before Eisenbach, first left Hochdorf / Funfbronn, then right to Hochdorf (small road with rubble surface). Great descent through the forest, then bottom right to Seewald-Erzgrube. You pass the Hageld dam and come from Erzgrube via Igelsberg to Freudenstadt. In Freudenstadt follow the B 28 in the direction of Strasbourg / Baden-Baden / Kniebis.

In Kniebis left in elegant turns into the valley to Bad Rippoldsau. In the village at the church turn left “Freudenstadt / Zwieselberg”. After 14 kilometers of the next ingenious mountain route, you could easily miss the junction to the left to Schomberg and Schinkenfeld, which leads in a very beautiful landscape to the B 294 to Schiltach. Here you have to see the half-timbered houses on the market square before you quickly head to Hausach on the B 294. There left on the B 33 “Villingen-Schwenningen” and already after Gutach right to -Elzach. What follows is a fabulous mountain route out of the valley. Behind Elzach you come to the B 294, which you follow to Waldkirch and Denzlingen, to then reach Freiburg again.

Base quarters
Freiburg is ideal for rolling up the Black Forest from the west: an old town well worth seeing with many great pubs. There are also exciting museums, a famous minster and winding streets. The highlight: right behind Freiburg’s eastern outskirts, the winding roads begin high into the Black Forest.

Overnight stays
The Best Western Premier Hotel Victoria (Eisenbahnstrasse 54, 79098 Freiburg, phone 07 61/20 73 40, www.hotel-victoria.de) is a particularly environmentally friendly four-star hotel in the heart of Freiburg. The motorcycle is in its own fenced-off parking area, the boss drives a Harley.

Reading material
Southern Black Forest travel guide by Cornelia Ziegler, Verlag Reise Know-How, 12.50 euros, small enough for a tank bag. With 312 pages, it offers a lot of information – but only for Tour 2 and 3. The whole Black Forest in one book: Baedeker Allianz Travel Guide Black Forest, 22.95 euros. Tour tips: “Black Forest: 10 day tours for motorcyclists”, Highlights Verlag, 11.90 euros. Plus the MARCO-POLO card 1: 200,000 (Vosges, Alsace, Black Forest), MairDuMont, 8.50 euros.

Blockages
Many faster routes are limited to 70 or even 60 km / h for safety reasons.

Biker meeting
Cafe Schulle (Haldeleweg 4, 77784 Oberharmersbach, phone 0 78 37/92 23 77). Snack kiosk on Lochberg between Oberharmersbach and Bad Peterstal. The two kiosks at the dam of the Schwarzenbach dam near Forbach.

Worth seeing
The ruins of the Allerheiligen monastery. You can walk to it in five minutes and fortify yourself in the monastery courtyard with its sun terrace (Allerheiligen 6, 77728 Oppenau-Lierbach, phone 0 78 04/12 00, www.klosterhof-allerheiligen.de). The Jazzhaus Freiburg in the old wine cellar under the Goethe Institute in the Weinschloble on Wilhelmstrasse offers live music almost every day. The half-timbered town of Schiltach offers the peculiarity of a triangular market square and a beautiful tanner quarter. The Mummelsee at the foot of the Hornisgrinde is a mandatory stop on the B 500, the Black Forest Hochstrabe. As a detour from the route, Baden-Baden is tempting as a world-famous health resort with a casino. As an alternative to gambling, you can admire various museums or the noble architecture of the spa and bathing district.

Tour 2: The green center

Tour tip: Motorcycling in the Black Forest

Werel

Route length: 280 kilometers; full day tour.

Leave Freiburg on this tour with lots of nature to the east on the B 31 towards Donaueschingen; at the end of the “Autobahn” take the Buchenbach / St. Margen and immediately after Buchenbach the easily overlooked junction “Thurner” to the right. It goes up to the Thurner guest house, which is located directly at the intersection with the B 500, in a beautifully curvy and panoramic manner. It goes left and immediately left again to St. Margen and St. Peter. Pass the village straight ahead and head towards Waldkirch over the Kandel summit. Descent on a small, narrow serpentine road with very poor road conditions; on the B 294 before Waldkirch, merge left in a northerly direction with the indication “Elzach”. After two kilometers, behind Siensbach, turn right to Simonswald and Furtwangen through the Simonswalder Valley. A veritable mountain route with well-developed, fast curves leads out of the valley, which is somewhat boring from a technical point of view, which slopes steeply to Furtwangen. Drive around Furtwangen on the bypass (“All directions”) and turn left on the B 500 to Triberg.

Through the town and at the T-junction, the decision is made whether to tour the very colorful town center on the right and drive on the busy and sometimes very slow B 33 to Hornberg to pass the center of the watch industry. Those who prefer curves can turn left at the T to Schonach (“World’s largest cuckoo clock”, see “Worth seeing”) and continue on wonderfully curvy through the Elztal towards Elzach. At the T-junction in Oberprechtal, turn right to Hornberg, which can be reached again and again on a very winding route down in the valley. A quick look up to the castle, which lies steeply above the village, or to the many cuckoo clocks that can be bought south of the city on the B 33, then continue to Schramberg and in the city right to St. Georgen. There first left onto the B 33 and after four kilometers right to Vohrenbach through the valley landscape of the Brigach (one of the source rivers of the Danube), which you should slowly enjoy on a tiny lane between moors, meadows and forest. At the T-junction, not to Villingen-Schwenningen, but to the right on a well-developed, fast curve route via Vohrenbach to Neustadt-Titisee.

After reference has been made to the classic Black Forest postcard motif of Lake Titisee in the town of the same name, it goes at a brisk ride on the actually too well-developed B 317 towards “Todtnau / Schauinsland” to Feldberg, another Black Forest tourist magnet, whose summit can only be accessed by means of Can be reached by cable car or on foot. Perhaps more tempting is to continue to Todtnau, where there is actually only one decision: turn right towards Kirchzarten, which can be reached quickly on a route blessed with a great mountain stretch. There are even more addictive curves when you take the junction to the left to the Schauinsland and finally reach Freiburg after unprecedentedly adventurous sloping dances.

Motorcycle tour in the Black Forest: The world’s largest cuckoo clock is in Schonach. It can even be viewed from the inside.

Info

region
While the northern Black Forest is the most wooded part of the Black Forest, the landscape in the middle is more varied with more agriculture and meadows in the valleys. The tour also includes the highest part of the mountains, which is assigned to the south of the Black Forest. Here are perfect panoramic mountains such as Feldberg, Kandel or Schauinsland, to whose free peaks you wind your way up curvy. A little off the beaten track, you pass tourist highlights such as the Titisee or the cuckoo clocks around Triberg.

Break tip
If you are hungry at the top of the Feldberg Pass: Ristorante-Pizzeria Feldbergpass (www.hotel-feldbergpass.de) Fancy a romantic boat trip in a pedal boat, rowing boat or electric boat? The gorge-like Hollental is one of the most important east-west traffic connections in the Black Forest. You can reach the deep cut with its Hirschsprung monument high on a rock a little off the beaten track, by making a detour from Titisee-Neustadt towards Freiburg on the busy B31, which is the largest natural lake in the Black Forest. The town of Titisee on its banks is one of the tourist attractions in the Black Forest (see also tips for breaks). Germany’s highest natural waterfall pours 97 meters into the valley near Todtnau (www.todtnauer-ferienland.de).

Line closures
The former Schauinsland mountain route behind Freiburg-Gunterstal to the top of the pass is closed to motorbikes on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Frequent speed controls on Fridays.

Tour 3: South route

Tour tip: Motorcycling in the Black Forest

Werel

Route length: 326 kilometers; full day tour.

Leave Freiburg in the direction of Neustadt-Titisee. Follow the sign “Todtnau / Schauinsland” in the city. The ingenious Schauinsland mountain route is closed on weekends, however, and you have to drive via Kirchzarten towards Todtnau to get to the Schauinsland via Notschrei. After the top of the Schauinsland pass, turn right towards Munstertal with a fabulous, wide view. At Gasthaus Giebhubel (viewing terrace), turn sharply left back towards Munstertal. Great descent, then left towards Schonau / Neuhof / Belchen. You pass the break tip Gasthof Bergfreude and then turn right towards Belchen (pass the junction up to the cable car, it only leads to a parking lot). After Aitern on the B 317 left towards Todtnau and after 2.5 kilometers right to St. Blasien and through Bernau with its various communities to the junction to Schluchsee.

There left Schluchsee / Feldberg and directly at the lake right towards Waldshut / Schluchsee on the B 500. Pass the village Schluchsee towards St. Blasien, but at the end of the lake left via Grafenhausen and uhlingen to Waldshut. Around the Witznau reservoir, the southern Black Forest shows convincingly what curves are. Waldshut can be reached via the B 34, which you follow to Albbruck. There right to Gorwihl / Albtal through one of the beautiful valley landscapes of the southern Black Forest to St. Blasien. Before the village left towards Todtmoos and there left towards Bad Sackingen. Shortly after Segeten right via Nieder- / Obergebisbach to Wehr. Keep right there at the B 518 and turn into the beautiful Wehratal to Todtmoos. Leave the village in the direction of Todtnau and in the Todtmoos-Weg district, turn left in the direction of Zell. When you reach the B 317, turn right towards Schonau, but after six kilometers before the village in Wembach, turn left towards Badenweiler through the small meadow valley.

In Neuenweg you could shorten the tour in the direction of Staufen and stay on the wonderful curve route – or make a detour to the south and turn left to Tegernau and then right to Badenweiler. The reward is a great curve stretch, especially from the junction to the Kandertal valley, incredibly narrow and twisting, as it is hardly found in Germany. In Badenweiler with its villas, patiently drive through the corresponding 30 km / h zones and in Niederweiler turn right in the direction of Schonau, which again leads to an incredibly narrow and winding road, which, however, has a lot of damage and even 30 km before the crest of the Kreuzweg forest car park / h is limited. At the Haldenhof inn, turn left to “Staufen / Munstertal” on again a tiny and poor road. From Munstertal then quickly to Staufen and follow the B 3 directly to Freiburg.

Tour 3 through the Black Forest: The southern route in the MOTORRAD tour planner

Tour tip: Motorcycling in the Black Forest

Iron ham

Motorbike tour in the Black Forest: In narrow, charming rocky gorges, the Black Forest slopes down south to the Rhine Valley. The ultimate driving and nature experience.

Info

region
One of the most winding stretches in Germany, which offers an unimagined abundance of slopes. The southern Black Forest scores with many very narrow streets that twist and twist through the landscape. The Hotzenwald is a real tip for those who like to explore. Its winding valleys are so numerous that not all of them fit into this tour.

Break tip
In front a traditional Black Forest inn, behind a modern hotel is the Belchen-Multen inn at an altitude of 1030 meters (79677 Aitern, phone 07673/209, www.belchen-multen.de). For motorcyclists there is a drying room, tour suggestions and parking spaces. In Munstertal / Obermunstertal district, friends of vintage motorcycles and owners of modern machines meet in Cafe Bergfreude (Lochmatte 1, 79244 Munstertal, phone 07636/1357).

Worth seeing
The 1284 meter high Schauinsland is not only known for its winding racetrack, it is also a striking mountain with bizarre beeches on the summit and a visitor mine on the pass road. For the summit you have to walk or take the cable car (www.bergwelt-schauinsland.de). The same applies to the 1414 meter high Belchen (www.belchen-seilbahn.de). The Schluchsee was dammed, but it is even larger than the naturally formed Titisee. It is also picturesquely embedded between wooded mountain ranges. There are numerous places to stop for refreshments on its north bank, while the south bank is more of a quiet hiking destination. The local history museum Husli east of the Schluchsee is almost on the route and is integrated into a beautiful old Black Forest house (district Rothaus in 79865 Grafenhausen, phone 07748/212, www.landeskunde-online.de/dir/rothaus.htm). Badenweiler on the western slope of the Black Forest is an old health resort with the ruins of an ancient Roman bath.

Line closures
As with Tour 2, the route to the Schauinsland behind Freiburg-Gunterstal up to the top of the pass is closed for motorbikes on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

Biker meeting
From late afternoon onwards, the parking lot of the Gasthaus Holzschlagermatte (south of Freiburg-Gunterstal) is the center of attraction on the former Schauinsland racetrack. Every Friday from 6 p.m. hungry bikers can be found with bratwurst and coke in Munstertal-Neuhof at Gasthaus Neuhof on the Todtnau Munstertal road (between Wiedener Eck and Obermunstertal).
