Two kinds of charms: While the South Styrian Wine Route is reminiscent of Tuscany, in the Wachau you curve through a kind of Lake Constance landscape. The four routes with the highest potential for hits in eastern Austria are presented below.

Routes in the east of Austria

It doesn’t always have to be the Grobglockner in Austria. The South Styrian Wine Route and Wachau offer everything that motorcyclists who love to enjoy themselves want: winding roads with little traffic through hilly cultural landscapes. Here are four routes that are likely to be hit in eastern Austria.

Tour 1 focuses on the passes of the South Styrian Wine Route.

Tour 1:
This tour focuses on the passes of the South Styrian Wine Road and collects 33 points: Shortly after the Motocamp Las Legas, a biker bar in Spielfeld on 67 before the Slovenian border, you turn right through an underpass towards Obegg. Lined with sunflowers and wine, the lane winds its way uphill. Green sign walls refer to the many courtyards on the South Styrian Wine Route. One of them is the Mahorko winery in shine. Junior boss Helmut is an enthusiastic biker and is an ideal companion. At the winery, turn left towards Slovenia and Langegg. The Old Wine Route has a full 18 percent (not per mille) gradient, sometimes the Savior, sometimes Saint Aloisius, hangs protectively by the roadside. With so much support, it can hardly hurt that there is not enough space in the text for every branch. It applies, as it were, as the eleventh commandment: Take a risk, somehow you always get back on the right path. For example to the Eory-Kogel viewpoint, where you can find the largest grape in the world. In Leutschach, the Tuscan-looking landscape is over for the time being, and hops are now being grown instead of wine. Past the motorcycle meeting place on Route 69, we burn straight to Eibiswald on the 69, have a quick coffee there in Gaby’s Treff, which is also the club of the West Styrian Oldtimer Club, and then turn left to the Radlpass. It’s only 650 meters high, but blessed with robust serpentines. On the other hand, now in Slovenia, there is no less bends down into the Drava valley. Along the river to Lavamund in Austria and then right to Eibiswald. A must is the pass-
road Soboth to the 1349 meter high Koglereck with exquisite combinations of curves. A temptation. Just like at the Bikertreff Karntnerblick, where delicious French fries are waiting. Once everything was covered by the sea, you can still find starfish and shells today. Then return to Eibiswald via St. Oswald or St. Lorenzen.

Tour 2 starting in Leutschach.

Tour 2
This route is committed to the leisurely cruising approach. The starting point is in Leutschach on the largest Klapotetz in Styria, a wooden wind turbine scarecrow whose wind turbine drives a clapper that is supposed to protect vineyards from unpleasant peckers by rattling. Four winding kilometers in the direction of Leibnitz offer the opportunity to let the super traps of the V-Rod breathe freely. Immediately after the “mini summit” turn left towards Eichberg and Trautenberg, later right to the Kreuzbergwarte. On both sides of the ridge road, vines stand at attention. The exhibits in the classic car museum in Grobklein are lined up in a similarly accurate manner. Even though it is quite busy with cars, the museum is definitely worth seeing.

In the scooter and moped cellar, treasures such as the “Sissy” from Lohner delight the nostalgic heart, while a guest garden strengthens the stomach. The Hallstatt Museum in Grobklein exhibits even more old devices, including cult cars from the Bronze Age. Via Fresing and Kitzeck (here again something for bad weather: the Styrian Wine Museum and the Kappelwirt, famous for its Sulmtaler chicken) to Einod and Heimschuh. A few hairpin bends up to Seggau Castle, where sales and guided tours can be tempting in the episcopal wine cellar, and then straight on to Leibnitz with inviting street cafes at the town hall; Unfortunately, there is no time for the excavations of the former Roman city of Flavia Solva, scusi. Space, preferably by the cubic meter, is what you would need in Ehrenhausen in the Kunstamt, an original restaurant where all movable interiors can be bought and taken away with you. The 37-point round in Leutschach closes via Gamlitz and Sulztal. If you’ve got a taste for it, you can refill it straight away: There is still the Schilcherweinstrasse in western Styria, the Sausaler Weinstrasse, which begins in Leibnitz, and the Klocher Weinstrasse, which leads north from Bad Radkersburg

Tour 3 – the “sporty” of the two Wachau tours.

Tour 3
The “sporty” of the two Wachau tours is the overall winner with 41 points: from Ysper on the 36 towards Poggstall, before Laimbach turn left, via Dorfles and Ulrichschlag to Gutenbrunn. Not the worst thing to warm up. Via Hundsbach to Roggenreith. Then to Scheib, Braunegg and Troibetsberg. Gentle turns and lush serpentines! Take a breather to Muhldorf, wake up on the 217 towards Ottenschlag. START stands promisingly on the asphalt, which is the traditional venue for the Scherau Mountain Prize between Otzbach and Elsenreith. A hill climb rarely comes alone, and so it goes via Kottes and Himberg, Muhldorf and Spitz straight on to Jauerling, the highest mountain in the Wachau at 961 meters. From Gut am Steg to Oberndorf, then nosedive on Maria Laach.

In Schallemmersdorf we come across the Danube. Here heavy tourist traffic, the Melk Abbey is getting closer. Today one look from the Danube bridge to the prominent monastery is enough. Ships look at Schonbuhel Castle, then off into the Dunkelsteiner Forest. While places like Wolfstein and Kochholz fire the imagination, we reach Aggsbacher Kartause and Maria Lang-egg monastery. Then over the Mauterner bridge
to Krems. Through tight bends up to Egelsee, over Sixtendorf and Weiben-
Kirchen zum Seiberer, THE mountain race track in the Wachau. In a smooth ride over the plateaus of the Waldviertel, over Albrechtsberg and Ottenschlag via Martinsberg and Dorfles back to Ysper.

Tour 4 starts in Ysper.

Tour 4
The “tourist” of the two Wachau tours (37 points) also starts in Ysper and leads on the 36 to Laimbach and via Munichreith and Nussendorf to Artstetten Castle, once a film set for the “Danube Princess”. At Klein Pochlarn, Oskar Kokoschka’s birthplace and a top address for rare US cars, continue across the Danube to Melk Abbey. Visit of the imposing Benedictine monastery, then on a small mountain special test to the Aggstein castle ruins with a panoramic view over the Danube. Continue along the right bank, enjoying the landscape river from your motorcycle saddle as if from a rolling box. Past the 1000-bucket mountain (one bucket equals 56 liters), the landmark of the Wachau wine town of Spitz, and various Heurigen restaurants with fresh young wine, it goes to Rossatz. Break on the Danube beach opposite Durnstein, whose Blue Church is as inseparable from the Wachau as Richard the Lionheart, who languished in Durnstein Castle. The Gottweig Abbey, which can be reached via Oberbergern and Klein Wien, offers culinary delights, the monastery restaurant terrace and heavenly view are a stunner. This also applies to Helmut Kirchmayer’s motorcycle museum in Krems-Egelsee. To let all the impressions sink in, then calmly on the 3 along the Danube towards Ybbs, then behind Klein Pochlarn on curvy pick-me-ups up to Maria Taferl, down to Marbach and back to Ysper via Munichreith.
