Martin Wickert, Touratech Board Member for Marketing and Sales, explains the advantages of the newly used hydroforming technology as follows: “First of all, this engine guard made of 4 mm thick aluminum is much more stable than the usual cut, folded and welded variants. In addition, the round shape makes it easier to overcome obstacles, where an edge or a seam might get stuck.”

In hydroforming, a sheet metal is inserted into a tool and pressed into the desired shape using water pressure. This way, there are neither edges nor weld seams. Touratech has invested in this production technology itself. “Of course, it is not enough to set up the machine. You also need some know-how, especially in toolmaking, in order to be able to work with it properly. We have that and that’s why we like to use this option.”

In the medium term, Touratech could envision manufacturing other components such as side panels using this technology. “This is an interesting option even for very small quantities”, concludes Martin Wickert.

The Touratech engine protection “rally” is available for the BMW R 1200 GS / Adventure, the Honda CRF 1000 L Africa Twin and the KTM 1050/1090/1190 Adventure as well as the 1290 Super Adventure, for 299 euros each in natural aluminum and black.
