In Northamptonshire, UK, on July 31, 2020, motorcycles seized by the police went to a scrap press. On June 14, 2021, Merseyside police had a number of confiscated motorcycles destroyed. The seized machines are not just about reckless driving or illegal off-road trips, but also illegally operated and illegally converted bikes. This also includes stolen motorcycles or unregistered vehicles. They are often intended to be sold on the black market, but are also used for theft and robbery.

In order to make motorcyclists aware of the dangers of vehicle theft, the Ace Cafe in London invited some motorcycle policemen to the Motorcycle Awareness Day – or MAD Sunday – on June 6, 2021. Sergeant Clem Jones, also guest at the event:

“We are very happy that Ace invited us to this event. We take every opportunity to speak to motorcyclists about the protection of their motorcycles and motorized two-wheelers. Often, scooters and mopeds are stolen in order to commit violent crimes such as robbery and demolition. When securing a bike or scooter, bikers help protect their property, but they also help us fight the thieves by making life difficult for them.”

Northamptonshire Police

On July 31, 2020, motorcycles seized by the police went to a scrap press in Northamptonshire, UK. The drivers of the motorcycles had previously attracted attention due to their inconsiderate driving behavior.

For many who are not often on the island or faced with British news, it is hard to imagine what is going on. In Great Britain, private vehicles are not only stolen to end up in the ditch after a short pleasure drive – or worse – to commit a crime with it. The British also have a serious problem with large-scale motorcycle thefts. Entire restoration garages or dealer stores are cleared out. The police can track down many motorcycles, but some end up in containers and are sold elsewhere or broken down into their individual parts because that is less risky and often even more lucrative than selling a complete bike.

Actions in which confiscated motorcycles are destroyed with a public impact are primarily intended to have a deterrent effect on motorcyclists who are very inconsiderate on their own bikes. Superintendent Kev Mulligan of the Northamptonshire Police explains: “Reckless driving may seem harmless fun to motorcyclists themselves, but this behavior causes suffering and fear in parts of the population. As the police, we advocate that the people in our region do not have to live with this harassment.” Some of the seized motorcycles were machines that could not be assigned to an owner, off-road bikes that were illegally operated on the road and machines that were illegally converted.

Conclusion

The problem on the island consists of 3 parts: On the one hand, traffic hooligans are ruthless, sometimes with illegal machines and often off-road. On the other hand, the subject of motorcycle and scooter theft cannot be discussed away from Great Britain. And thirdly, there are the crimes that are then committed with the stolen vehicles. The scrap press is of course not an effective means against all 3 fields. There may be deeper social problems behind this, and that may just be the tip of the iceberg.
