The whole technology is reminiscent of space travel. Two Triumph Rocket III engines coupled together and reduced to the maximum permitted displacement of three liters in accordance with the regulations. The three cylinders are completely modified.

The focused eyes are the hallmark of every racing driver. Guy Martin (left) has been looking for many challenges in life: Tourist Trophy on the Isle of Man, speedway, steep wall driving. Pronounced fearfulness is not really a trait of the 35-year-old. The complexity of a world record attempt in Bonneville can be seen not only in the elaborate technology, but also in Guy’s facial expressions. How long can patience and perseverance be put to the test with a media professional like him?

Good things take time

The dried up Bonneville salt lake is the home of the speed junkies. Triumph hissed to first records in 1955 in the American town of Wendover. Sixty years later, tradition wrapped in carbon can be accelerated to over 650 kilometers per hour?

They do exist, the magical places of speed. Places where the landscape leaves plenty of room for full throttle. Places where the observer can enjoy an almost surreal spectacle. Places where driven speed seekers prove their passion with a stopwatch.

Fortunately, there are more of them than meets the eye. The TT course on the Isle of Man, for example, the Nordschleife at the Nurburgring – or here the Bonneville Salt Lake on the federal border between Utah and Nevada.

But magical places would not be magical if they could be easily calculated. It rains a lot in the Nurburgring-Eifel. We know But here? In this barren landscape an hour and a half drive from Salt Lake City? There is now a strong wind in late autumn, cool temperatures and precipitation. This cloudy weather cocktail blows us into a story. One with a coherent beginning and an uncertain outcome.

200 MPH Club

From the mid-fifties to the seventies of the last century, American teams with English Triumph engines went on the hunt for records in Bonneville. At that time, a competing team fought the times milled on the salt practically every week. The German motorcycle manufacturers also fueled this record hunt at the time. NSU? Wilhelm Herz? Dolphin III? The elderly shine wisely, the youth are amazed.

If successful, these courageous speed knights belonged to the “200 MPH Club” when this wall came down in the mid-1950s. The wild men accelerated to 345 km / h in 1956! With maximally tuned engines plus aerodynamic finesse in finely cut aluminum. Clever technicians turned the discarded tank of a fighter jet into a streamliner, or “streamlined train” in German.

The records achieved on the salt lake naturally served as marketing fuel. In 1959, Triumph created an icon that is still known worldwide today with the first production motorcycle called the Bonneville. And let’s be honest: Most people probably associate the name Bonneville more with triumph than with the namesake, a salt lake

Record attempt in 2016

But back to the planned record year 2016. The current Triumph Streamliner has been hanging mostly motionless on its mobile maintenance and holding device for days. As has been the case in recent years, Bonneville is relentless. Every year there are only very narrow time windows when the salt is dry enough. Then the course managers move out to machine the courses. It should be as level and smooth as possible. Skiers know it well: a route on perfect snow rolled in a pistenbulli is fun and speed. Sulziger snow in combination with holes and hard surfaces will catapult you into orbit in the worst case.

Streamliner pilot Guy Martin, hero of the Isle of Man-TT, sits a few centimeters above a still ruthless mogul slope and controls the cigar like an airplane pilot. With the left joystick he can steer with minimal deflections and switch at the push of a button. But he keeps the load on course with the brake under his right foot or the accelerator joystick on the right. His courage and sensitivity should bring the hoped-for 400-mile record on incalculable terrain.

Matt Markstaller, designer of the Streamliner, explains it like this: “We do drag racing on a natural slope. We only use the 1000 hp for maximum acceleration in order to achieve the record as possible at the five-mile measuring point. After that we have to come to a halt with the aircraft carbon brakes plus brake parachutes for the remaining three miles. “

There is still a long way to go to the braking point. The current world record of the Ack Attack team and Rocky Robinson as a pilot has stood at 376.363 miles or 605.697 kilometers per hour since September 2010. For this team, too, a long struggle with technology, weather and accidents. It seems a bit like space travel: actually not that complicated – but complex.

In general, there are a lot of safety checks before a possible success: Can the driver climb out within 30 seconds without help? Does the extinguishing system work, etc. If you want a record sanctioned by the FIM, you have to bow to this procedure. But it makes sense.

Despite all precautions, the risk at these high speeds remains immensely high. There were also fatal accidents on the salt lake in 2016. Maybe that’s why drivers like Guy Martin are needed. People without a longing for death, but with enormous curiosity for extreme challenges and a lot of courage. Which should then be available at the push of a button. It only starts when there is minimal wind, a dry slope and a vehicle that is working perfectly at that moment.

Let’s shorten it at this point: 2016 was not yet the year of the Triumph Streamliner. When the weather conditions allow the first test runs prescribed by the FIM, the noble racer plops twice off the track. Guy Martin remains unharmed, but the carbon-kevlar monocoque and the whole team pick up scratch marks. Still too many problems in the overall system? Anyway, stay tuned, triumph!
