Triumph Tiger 900

Lighter, stronger, more dynamic, from 11,350 euros

Triumph has completely redesigned its mid-range enduro. The three-cylinder was increased to 888 cm³, the range now includes a basic and two rally and GT variants. Prices start at 11,350 euros.

D.he strategy of taking the Euro 5 hurdle with more displacement with hardly any changes in performance was also chosen by Triumph for the new Tiger. But the British have changed a lot more than just the engine on the mid-range enduro.

More displacement and more torque

But let’s stay with the three-cylinder for now. The now offers 888 cc and a new 1-3-2 firing order, which should deliver an even more characteristic sound and better response. The top performance remains unchanged at 95 hp, but is already 750 tours earlier at 8,750 rpm. The maximum torque has increased for this. 87 Nm are achieved at 7,250 tours. And Triumph promises noticeably more power over a wide speed range. In addition, the three-cylinder (GT and Rally versions only) can also be throttled for the A2 valve.

The triplet sits further forward and further down in a completely new tubular steel frame with a screwed aluminum frame rear and screwed pillion footrest arms. The tank holds 20 liters, and the seat bench, which has become narrower, can be adjusted in height by 20 millimeters (760 – 780 mm). For those with short legs, there is also a lower version of the Tiger, which also lowers the seat height by 50 millimeters. The handlebar is closer to the driver. Another new feature is the two-part cooler system with less capacity but two fans. The anti-hopping clutch on the six-speed manual transmission relies on servo assistance. A shift assistant with blipper function is only available for the top versions. The 320 double disc front wheel stoppers are equipped with the elegant Brembo Stylema pliers. Rear supports a 255 disc. ABS is standard, of course, cornering ABS plus traction control only on GT and Rally. Triumph consistently uses LED technology for the lighting elements.

A colored TFT display dominates the cockpit (base: 5 inches, Rally and GT: 7 inches), which also bundles connectivity features. There is also a smartphone compartment with a USB charging socket. Depending on the model variant, two to six driving modes can also be selected.

Sometimes road, sometimes enduro

As already mentioned, Triumph splits the new Tiger 900 into five variants of the model range, whereby only the GT and Rally variants with the more sophisticated equipment features are available. The dry weight accordingly ranges from 192 to 201 kg – 5 kg less than the previous model. In general, the Tiger 900 with a 19-inch cast front wheel should be a generalist. The Pro versions, also with a 19 inch front, are aimed at asphalt travelers. The tire dimension is 100/90. The rally variants are equipped with spoked wheels for tubeless tires (front 21 inch, 90/90 tires) and are intended to appeal to real enduro riders. A 150/70 tire is uniformly installed at the rear.

A differentiation is also made with the spring elements. The base and GT have Marzocchi components. The USD 45 fork, which can be adjusted in preload and rebound, offers 180 mm of travel, the central spring strut 170 mm. In the base, only the preload is variable, the GT models also offer a rebound adjustment (Pro even electric).

Showa suspension elements characterize the Rally versions. The fully adjustable USD 45 fork has a spring travel of 240 mm, and the spring strut, which is adjustable in preload and rebound, has 230 mm.

Many options to choose from

If you want to further customize your Tiger, you can fall back on over 65 factory accessories as well as various case sets developed with Givi as well as the Trekker and Expedition accessory kits. The market launch of the new Tiger 900 models will take place from February 2020. The basic price for the basic version is 11,350 euros plus 450 euros for ancillary costs. The Tiger 900 GT / Low is available from 12,950 euros (plus additional costs). The 900 GT Pro starts at 14,750 euros, the 900 Rally at 13,750 euros and the 900 Rally Pro at 15,350 euros (plus additional costs).

Conclusion

Triumph vigorously rebuilds the Tiger. Chassis, drive, peripherals – everything is new. The overall package is coherent and the Euro 5 takes away any horror.
