When Suzuki replaced the air-cooled Bandit 1200 with the 1250 in 2007, an era died. PS wanted to know how much potential the old one still had and upgraded it with the latest accessories. In the first part of the tune-up: mufflers and brake pads.

Reloaded

Sometimes the motorcycle scene is like real life. While some grow old completely satisfied with their darling, others swap their partner for a younger, slimmer or more fun model after a few years. Still others stay true to their old age, but try to keep them competitive through all kinds of rejuvenation measures. However, it is not easy for this group. Because if you search through the PS booklet collections of the last few years in search of tuning tips for your used car, you will in most cases not be really happy. The recommended accessories are usually out of date, technically outdated or no longer available. Annoying, especially for owners of popular long-term favorites like the Suzuki GSF 1200 Bandit.

PS took on the problem and founded the initiative “Pimp my Bandit”. The idea behind it: A bandit lady that is getting on in years should be brought up to date with the latest accessories, visually and technically, and rejuvenated to mingle with the people again. A test candidate was quickly found: a black 2001 Bandit 1200 S with over 50,000 km of experience under his belt. Main problem areas for the patient: front brake, silencer and the somewhat limp series chassis. For the finish, there should also be something from the area of footrests, handlebars and paintwork. Sharpen the wrench and get to the operating table.

End pots

Tune-up, Suzuki Bandit 1200 S, part 1

Bilski

45 degrees, 50 centimeters, below 96 dB (A): none of the ABE accessory dampers had problems with the volume.

The most effective way to get a bandit going is through the end pot. The massive series part is known as a performance eater and is therefore at the top of the tuning list. It is all the more astonishing that our test candidate is already pressing a whopping 116 PS and 107 Nm on the test stand role with the series pot? and thus outperforms all bandits tested by PS so far. The previous owner indignantly rejects speculations about possible increases in performance through other camshafts or a carburetor kit. Allegedly everything comes as standard. Nevertheless, this service can lead to bureaucratic problems. According to EC guidelines, a motorcycle may deviate a maximum of 10 percent from the value specified in the papers during the conformity test of the series performance. In the case of a 98 hp bandit that would be just under 108 hp ?? 8 less than our test bike. Bad bandit! Strictly speaking, the law-abiding bandit driver would therefore have to subject his motorcycle to a performance test and have the vehicle documents corrected.

It is also suspicious that the Bandit on the test bench only turns into the limiter in fifth gear at a real 290 km / h. Bandit Pope Rainer appeases his father, speaks of serial translation and recommends a smaller chain sprocket to friends. However, the already quite optimistic speedometer needle turns even faster in a circle? Translated as standard, the display reaches the stop at 260 km / h. As an alternative to the translation, the assembly of an accessory muffler also helps our bandit get new spirits. Almost all of the tested silencers surpass the 120-hp bar even in the street-legal version with a dB killer. Devil remains at series level, but is still ahead of the series replacement damper from Yoshimura. To do this, it chases the exhaust gases through a catalytic converter and so calms the environmental conscience of climate-conscious bandits.

Austria is also riding the green wave: Sebring and Remus offer a Kat version in addition to the open standard intermediate pipe. On the test bench, the exhaust gas cleaner devours about half a horsepower, for reasons of comparability with the other, uncleaned exhaust gas ducts, the two Austrians were allowed to do without the catalytic converter for the test. Without noise reduction, most of the test pots topped up again, above all Devil, which increased by 7 hp and 7 dB (A) and made the leap into the midfield. The umpire does not need that. Even in the street-legal version with 126 hp, it is above the competition and can afford to leave a horse in the stable without a dB eater. The installation of an accessory damper has not only performance advantages but also advantages in terms of weight. Interestingly, in the case of the Bandit, titanium is not necessarily lighter than aluminum and this in turn is not necessarily lighter than steel. The heaviest muffler in the field, the Holeshot Master, has an aluminum casing, whereas the 300 g lighter SR-Racing is made of stainless steel.

Silencer: BOS to Remus

122 ?? 123 PS: 3 stars; 124 ?? 125 PS: 4 stars; 126 PS: 5 stars)

Conclusion
The series damper is known in bandit circles as a performance hog. Accordingly, the muffler loses a lot of points on the accessory competition in a direct comparison. Only the one sold exclusively through Suzuki Yoshimura With 114 HP, Dual Oval is another 2 HP less than the power of the heavy series part. Points: 2

BOS performance

Contact: BOS Auspuff GmbH, 49828 Neuenhaus, Tel. 05941/4793, www.bosauspuff.de
Price: 399 euros
Material / weight: aluminum / 3.5 kg
Standing noise: 89/91 dB (A)

Performance ABE: **
Performance Racing: ****

Conclusion
The muffler from BOS ends up in the test medium field with 121 hp in road trim. Without the dB eater, the performance then adds another 4 hp and is one of the strongest test participants in the racing version. All the more gratifying that removing the noise killer only increases the volume by 2 dB (A). Points: 6

Devil Magnum

Contact: Devil S.A.S., F-74800 Saint-Pierre-en-Faucigny, Tel. 0033-45003 / 7879, www.devil.fr
Price: 573.12 euros
Material / weight: titanium / 3.4 kg
Standing noise: 90/97 dB (A)

Performance ABE: *
Performance Racing: ***

Conclusion
The bad performance in the street version spoils the result for the Devil. 115 hp is just below the standard level, due to the strong competition, this power is only enough for one star. On the other hand, it adds a whopping 7 HP and 7 dB (A) without a dB killer. After Yoshimura, the Devil is the second most expensive end pot on the test field. Points: 4

Giannelli slipon

Price: 419 euros
Material / weight: titanium / 3.2 kg
Standing noise: 90/93 dB (A)

Performance ABE: **
Performance Racing: ****

Conclusion
The lightweight slipon by Giannelli also reduces noise and performance via the dB eater. 5 HP stand between the street legal and the racing version. With 120 and 125 hp, the Italian Slipon is similar to the BOS: restrained performance in road trim and a lot of extra for the racetrack. Points: 6

Holeshot Master

Price: 416 euros
Material / weight: aluminum / 4.3 kg
Standing noise: 93/95 dB (A)

Performance ABE: ***
Performance Racing: ***

Conclusion
Like the Giannelli, the Holeshot Master also achieves a total of six stars, but in a completely different way: It doesn’t care whether he’s on the street or
is moved on the racetrack, it has 122 hp ready for both types of terrain. The volume also remains the same, but is a bit above the standard level. Points: 6

Hurric slipon

Price: 279 euros
Material / weight: aluminum / 4.1 kg
Standing noise: 94/97 dB (A)

Performance ABE: **
Performance Racing: **

Conclusion
One horsepower less and two stars less. On paper, the Hurric Slipon is only a little worse than the Holeshot, but due to the narrow test field, this PS costs him a lot of points. In return, the hurricane attracts with an attractive price. At 279 euros, it is the cheapest damper in the test. Points: 4

Laser Duo-Tech

Contact: SO Products GmbH, 48455 Bad Bentheim / Gildehaus, Tel. 05924/78360, www.so-products.com
Price: 359 euros
Material / weight: stainless steel / 4.2 kg
Standing noise: 91/97 dB (A)

Performance ABE: ***
Performance Racing: ****

Conclusion
In the racing version, the Duo-Tech is right at the front? both for power and sound measurement. Otherwise only SR, Giannelli and BOS create 125 PS, 97 dB (A) only the Hurric. The laser also cuts a fine figure in road trimming. Three stars and 122 hp are enough for second place overall. Points: 7

Leovince SBK

Price: 449 euros
Material / weight: titanium / 3.8 kg
Standing noise: 92/94 dB (A)

Performance ABE: **
Performance Racing: ***

Conclusion
Leovince, wrapped in fancy titanium, falls
primarily through its appearance. The performance and noise values are rather inconspicuous. For the racetrack, the noble Italian pushes another 2 HP and 2 dB (A) compared to the 120-HP road variant, but only lands in the middle of the field on both terrains. Points: 5

Remus Revolution

Contact: Phonix Motorrad-Tuning, 52078 Aachen,

Price: 344.50 euros
Material / weight: aluminum / 3.4 kg
Standing noise: 91/92 dB (A) ´

Performance ABE: **
Performance Racing: ***

Conclusion
The aluminum muffler from Remus shines with its low weight: 3.4 kg. Only the Giannelli is lighter. In terms of performance, the Austrian lacks a horsepower and thus a star compared to his compatriot von Sebring in road trim. At 92 dB (A), the damper in the racing version is hardly louder than the series. Points: 5

Silencer: Sebring to Yoshimura

Tune-up, Suzuki Bandit 1200 S, part 1

Bilski

The Twister silencer model from Sebring is in the middle with 6 points.

Sebring Twister

Contact: Mizu Vertriebs GmbH, 78247 Hilzingen,

122 ?? 123 PS: 3 stars; 124 ?? 125 PS: 4 stars; 126 PS: 5 stars)

Conclusion
The Twister follows the same concept as the Holeshot: same performance on country roads and racetracks. In terms of volume, there is only 2 dB (A) between the racing and ABE versions. With three stars in each category, the Sebring is in the middle in terms of points; at the price as well. Points: 6

SR Racing 3D

Contact: SR-Racing GmbH & Co. KG, 86529 Schrobenhausen, Tel. 08252/905540, www.sr-racing.de
Price: 443.74 euros
Material / weight: stainless steel / 4.0 kg
Standing noise: 90/94 dB (A)

Performance ABE: *****
Performance Racing: ****

Conclusion
126 PS bring the SR-Racing a full five stars as the only muffler in the field? and that in street trim. He can even afford the volume plus of 4 dB (A) for the racetrack with a power decrease of
1 PS to connect. In the overall result, he still leaves the competition by two stars. Points: 9

Yoshimura Dual Oval

Contact: Suzuki dealer, www.suzuki.de
Price: 632.81 euros
Material / weight: stainless steel / 3.8 kg
Standing noise: 91 / – dB (A)

Performance ABE: *
Performance Racing: *

Conclusion
Is it because of the cat? With 114 hp, the Yoshimura lags a little behind the series performance and ends up in last place. If you are looking for a visually appealing replacement for the rustic series part, you should still take a look at the chic Japanese. Workmanship, volume and weight are okay, but the price is steep. Point 2

Brake pads + conclusion

Tune-up, Suzuki Bandit 1200 S, part 1

Bilski

The rubbers from EBC shone with a great delay and the enclosed anti-friction plate.

The brake discs are also made of stainless steel, and they work up a sweat under the stress of the brake pad test. The test criteria are the braking time, brake metering and braking effect. Fortunately, there are hardly any negative surprises among the test participants. Only the only organic surface in the test field, the Newfren Racing, does not leave a good impression with its extremely long break-in time, tough effect and moderate dosage. The series pads work well, but tend to pick up suddenly after about two seconds during long braking maneuvers. During the test procedure it was also noticed that the fork was not able to cope with hard anchoring, kneeled and caused unrest in the motorcycle. PS will take care of that in the next part of the tune-up. Then it is the turn of the fork springs and shock absorber.

Conclusion:
If you upgrade them in a targeted way, our tune-up bandit can confidently compete against the younger competition: The SR-Racing muffler alone brings you an additional 10 hp ?? street legal; Those who pay attention to weight are also well served with an accessory damper. The original brake pads work quite well, but especially the blocks from EBC and Carbone Lorraine delay the Bandit even better.

The Ferodo rubbers offer the best price-performance ratio in the test. Great controllability, a constant pressure point and deceleration almost at the level of the EBC as well as the pleasantly short braking time give the Ferodo stoppers second place. The price is unbeatable: 29.50 euros per disc. Points: 13

Conclusion
The Lucas rubbers suffer from strong competition. While they are braking-in time, pressure point and brake dosage

Conclusion
Aside from the name, Newfren’s organic rubbers have nothing to do with racing. The braking time is extremely long and cannot be compared with any of the sintered linings. The rubbers show no bite and only slow down effectively with great manual force. The dosage is okay, but not at the top level either. Points: 5

Conclusion
The running-in time of Newfren’s sintered pads is roughly on par with series production. In terms of braking effect, the Newfren are ahead of the series. The lag is full, the pressure point stable and easy to feel. The dosage is also okay. The brake increases braking power in line with manual force. Points: 12

Conclusion
The Scottish premier behave in a similar way to the toppings from Alphatechnik. They take a relatively long time to slow down and initially appear dull. When retracted, the bulkheads gain a lot and decelerate at the EBC level, and the braking power is very easy to adjust. The pressure point remains constant even under heavy loads. Points: 13

Conclusion
The strength of the SBS blocks is their extremely short run-in time. From the first pull on the lever, the brake decelerates properly and is clearly noticeable. The braking effect of the SBS is similar to the series and is therefore in the middle. The SBS react cautiously to follow-up, the delay does not increase linearly with hand strength. Point 11

More tuning: father bandit

Tune-up, Suzuki Bandit 1200 S, part 1

Bilski

A bandit with 134 hp? No problem. Rainer’s father knows how it’s done.

An accessory muffler gives the Bandit 1200 4 to 10 more horsepower. If that’s not enough, Bandit Pope Rainer Vater (www.motorrad-vater.de) can help: With his ?? tuning for everyone ?? it manages to raise the power curve of the fat four-cylinder significantly without changing the characteristic high-torque power delivery. The camshafts remain original for the sake of stability, the tuning measures are limited to a special SR-Racing muffler, a modified carburetor nozzle, greater air flow and a revised cylinder head.

With these changes, father’s red bandit presses an additional 18 hp on the test stand role even in direct comparison with our exceptionally powerful test motorcycle. You can feel that while driving. Anyone who has ever driven a Bandit with 134 hp and 119 Nm no longer wants to rely on the standard version. After a slight warm-up problem, the red one is extremely powerful and gently lifts the front wheel in second gear; just great! Tuning costs: 2500 euros.

The project: “Make fresh out of old”

Tune-up, Suzuki Bandit 1200 S, part 1

Bilski

With the latest accessories, the big bandit should be turned into a heating iron.

“Pimp my bandit” is the name of the initiative with which PS would like to make an old Suzuki GSF 1200 Bandit competitive and attractive again with the latest accessories and then bring it to the people. The candidate is a 2001 bandit in black; Mileage: approx. 50,000. Its condition when it arrived at the editorial office was moderate, but appropriate for its age: sagging chain, matt paintwork, dented muffler, slack chassis. Bandits are not wrapped in cotton wool, but driven.

The plan provides for the following measures: installation of a lighter, stronger and more beautiful silencer, replacement of the standard brake pads with better accessories, revision of the standard chassis that is clearly too soft. For more comfort and a different look, a different handlebar, a modified paintwork and a footrest adapter plate were also considered. PS will continue to report on the status of the renovation campaign in the coming editions.
