The Aprilia Pegaso 650 lifts the front wheel with ease. Nevertheless, the flying messenger of the gods never became a high-flyer. Second-hand buyers could be inspired by the inexpensive alternative to the BMW F 650.

The German motorcyclist approves of Italian motorcycle construction for aesthetic finesse and, on a case by case basis, also technical sophistication – but it is a long way from buying such a model. The best example of this is the one built since 1992 Aprilia Pegaso 650. In terms of design and technology with the BMW F 650 derived from it, which is manufactured in the same hall in Noale, Venice, the Italian was around 1500 marks below the German Funduro until last year. And yet, without the white-blue emblem on the tank, it lacks the outstanding success of the F 650 in Germany, which was also surprising for BMW.
In any case, the lower popularity of the engine cannot be due to the fact that the single cylinder of both machines comes from the Austrian engine manufacturer Rotax. And the technically more complex single in the Aprilia with five valves arranged radially in the cylinder head and two camshafts with conical cams was able to convince in terms of power development and durability in MOTORRAD’s 50,000-kilometer long-distance test. The engine mobilized a good 48 hp and thrilled with explosive power from speeds of 3000 rpm. However, with up to eight liters per 100 kilometers, the Pegaso proved to be too thirsty, in connection with the 14-liter tank, this drinking pleasure limited the radius of action and thus also the urge to get around some touring riders.
The chassis received even more criticism, the upside-down fork of which was too soft and the rear shock absorber in the first series too hard and with too few adjustment options. From 1995 Aprilia used a damper with adjustable rebound damping and gave the Pegaso a more comfortable and three centimeter lower seat. A welcome change, because the first model with a seat height of 870 millimeters made surprising holding maneuvers a difficult to calculate risk for some short-legged people. Soloists are very comfortable on the move with the Pegaso, but it can still be tight for two.
From the 1995 model onwards, nothing has changed in terms of the slight oscillation from a speed of 130 km / h and the lack of stability of the front wheel guidance. In addition, the Pegaso’s weak light and the difficult-to-reach and difficult-to-adjust lever of the fuel tap was annoying from the start.
Problems with a leaky shock absorber and a worn-in water pump shaft of the first series were generally fixed as part of the three-year guarantee and are no longer an issue. According to the Aprilia representative in Germany, the delivery bottlenecks that occurred at the time for the necessary spare parts are now a thing of the past. There are sensitive things to report about the service life of the chain. Depending on the individual cylinder, the engine jerks and pulls strongly on the chain links below 3000 rpm, after 14,000 kilometers the original kit was at the end of the endurance test machine: the chain was unevenly length, hung loosely from the chainring and could no longer be tensioned. In order to at least remedy the rather uncomfortable chain maintenance with side stand, the main stand offered by Aprilia for 180 marks is a useful accessory. The Italians also have a set of suitcases with a topcase in their range of accessories.
Although the new Pegaso model, which has been new since 1997, is still rarely offered on the used market and certainly not as a bargain due to the low mileage, here are the most important changes. The fairing has grown significantly and thus improves the wind protection. Double headlights increase visibility at night and a 22-liter tank increases the range of the Pegaso. The reinforced chassis received significantly less spring travel (around fifty millimeters front and rear), and the seat height was accordingly reduced to an even more civilian 740 millimeters. With different control times, a modified airbox with an air filter that can be changed more quickly and more effective silencers, the engine gained smoothness and pulling power below 3000 rpm.
The new price of the Pegaso has now almost matched the BMW F 650. But relatively cheap and good pieces can be found on the used market. But be careful: In contrast to all other models before and after, the 1996 model only has 39 hp due to a differently tuned engine.

Reader Experience – Aprilia Pegaso 650

Aprilia Pegaso drivers are confident because they drive the original. And with weak points such as headlights and chains, they know how to help themselves with inexpensive alternatives.

In 1995 I bought a new Pegaso. Since then I have driven almost 12,000 kilometers with it. Actually, the only thing that bothers me is the difficult-to-reach fuel tap, which can only be turned when the vehicle is stationary, and strange engine noises in the speed range of around 4000 rpm. The turning behavior that takes getting used to is probably due to the tires (Michelin T 66). These are endurance runners, but should be enjoyed with caution when wet. The tank could be bigger for the vacation trips, but otherwise I’m very satisfied. Problem-free starting, safe driving behavior, powerful engine (also with 25 kW). Even if the service leaves a lot to be desired, I can recommend the Pegaso. Susanne Golditz, HamburgMy first Pegaso, built in 1994, I bought at the beginning of 1996 with an odometer reading of 12,000 kilometers. Above all, the great optics and the powerful engine were decisive for the purchase. The original chain was completely finished, the then mounted DID-X-ring chain is almost as good as new today at 34,000 kilometers. Otherwise, the strong twisting of the fork when braking as well as pronounced oscillation around the longitudinal axis from around 140 km / h was particularly noticeable in negative terms. The latter disappeared completely after lowering the rear end. After lowering it by four centimeters using longer strut rocker arms, I passed it on to my friend. As luck would have it, in the spring of 1997 I got the next Pegaso, also built in 1994, and we’ve been driving twins ever since. After several attempts, the ideal tire turned out to be the Pirelli MT 80, which combines good grip on the road with extreme durability, and also has acceptable off-road properties, but at a high price.Karl-Heinz Sprich, Bollschweil In the summer of 1974, my wife and I got one Aprilia Pegaso bought new. The two-person suitability was also decisive for the choice. The price / performance ratio is right: robust, powerful engine, upside-down fork, aluminum rims, plastic tank, good workmanship, top optics and Italian. In the winter of 1995 I made some changes: chrome mirror, fork bridge, polishing of exhaust covers and oil filter covers, chain guard and exhaust manifold cover made of polished aluminum, attachment of steel flex lines up to changing the tires (front Pirelli MT 69 Strada 100/90 / 19 and rear MT 75 140/70/17). In my opinion, optimal road tires with good grip in all positions and a tolerable service life (8000 kilometers in the front, half of them in the rear). The bench, however, takes some getting used to. After about 100 kilometers, my back starts to hurt.Herbert Leser, SaarlouisIn the late summer of 1996, after my Pegaso 600 was stolen, I bought a used 650, built in 1992, with a mileage of 63,000 at the moment. First impression: everything is better, the concept, the components , the processing. In retrospect, only the torque remains in the middle range, or in other words: below 3000 rpm only chop, above 6000 rpm only tough. So a hand had to be put on first. The original was 550 cm³ of SAE 20 oil in the fork, which I exchanged for 420 cm³ with a viscosity of SAE 5. This put an end to the poor response of the fork and the jumping of the front wheel. I also put the stanchions through the fork bridge up close to the handlebars. This improved the handiness and reduced the wobbly behavior in curves. By hanging the nozzle needles deeper in the bottom notch, I was able to reduce fuel consumption from around 6.5 to almost one and a half liters, but with a loss in pulling power. A tip for drivers who want to enjoy the starter freewheel for a long time: about every two years, dismantle the roller freewheel and check the surrounding tension spring for sufficient tension. Under no circumstances continue driving with the freewheel hooked. Repair costs around 1200 marks. The headlight, which was miserable in the first two years, can be replaced with a new one for a good 100 marks (different item number). Bernhard Linnemann, Gutersloh
