Used advice Harley-Davidson Super Glide Twin Cam

For many years the cheapest entry into Harley’s Big Twin world was called Dyna Super Glide. However, the model is not a cheap home. Second-hand, the sympathetically simple machine is very popular with connoisseurs.

You pair a spartan, slim Sportster with a glamorous, luscious Electra Glide and you get one Harley-Davidson Super glide. Sound absurd? But it is not. Willie G. Davidson, grandson of a founder of the Harley Company, headed the so-called Styling Department and designed the first Harley-Davidson Super Glide for the 1971 model year based on exactly these specifications. Called the “Factory Custom Bike” by the Americans, it is considered the ancestor of all Dyna models.

Initially a Shovelhead V2 tinkered with it, later the 1340 Evolution, which brought the model additional popularity. The cultivated Twin Cam engines with two camshafts and 68 hp have been in use since 1999. The 1450 weighs a good six hundred pounds, but is very dynamic compared to other Big Bikes from Harley. A good tip for used buyers, so this is the focus. The Harley-Davidson Twin Cam 88 Super Glide was also offered – considerably more expensive – as the Sport (2000 to 2006) and T-Sport (2001 to 2003) models with somewhat more stable chassis. The “athletes” now cost at least 1500 euros more. Since 2007, the Super Glide has been offered exclusively as a Custom model and has been given the 76 hp Twin Cam 96 with 1584 cubic meters. As of 2014, the Twin Cam 103 with 84 hp and almost 1700 cubic meters will continue the long history. But even after this evolutionary stage, the Super Glide remains true to its own tradition – as a real chopper.

With normal maintenance hardly any problems are to be expected. In any case, Harley-Davidson Super Glides with six-figure mileage are not unknown in Harley workshops. So if a complete service booklet is available, a look at the usual wear parts and tires is sufficient. The more interesting question is whether it is a US import. Some previous owners have swapped the mileage tachometer, and it is difficult to assign them to older machines based on the vehicle identification number. In the case of US imports with an unclear history, the resale value is quickly times 2000 euros below the usual prices! Popular retrofit exhaust systems, for example from Kesstech or Remus, are seen as adding value. A used Super Glide equipped with electronic sound management easily costs 1000 euros more. Forward rests can also increase the price by around 300 euros. Touring accessories (windshield, bags, protective bars) are less common and less in demand.

Market situation

The Schwacke list calculates just over 6000 euros for a 2004 FXD with over 80,000 kilometers. Unrealistic because hardly any Harley-Davidson Super Glides with more than 50,000 kilometers are advertised. And even including a maximum of 20 percent surcharge for reduced mileage, the prices are hardly realistic on the market. With a lot of luck, you can get a reasonably well-kept used car from the years 1999 to 2001 from a private source for 7500 euros. For the Sport and T-Sport higher prices are called, here it usually only starts from 8500 euros. Well-cared-for pieces under 10,000 euros are in great demand – even if they are just one euros less. For this money, for example, injection models from 2004 with 20,000 to 30,000 kilometers are on offer. A good deal, especially since the motorcycle is considered to be very stable in value. There is a certain jump in price from the Twin Cam 88 to the Twin Cam 96, ie to Super Glide Custom models from 2007. Non-falling and shiny FXDC models with around 25,000 kilometers of mileage are 11,000 euros and more. In the price range over 12,000 euros, there are a few miles of demonstrators from dealers to choose from – good alternatives to buying a new one.
