The unconventional one

The trend towards the 600cc naked bike continues unabated. Second-hand buyers make a good impression with the independently styled Honda Hornet 600?

Peter Limmert

At first, the competition was unable to counter the brilliant success of the Suzuki Bandit 600. Only since 1998 have Honda been able to stand up to Suzuki’s bestseller with the Hornet and Yamaha with the Fazer.
In contrast to the more conventionally held all-rounders from Yamaha and Suzuki, Honda put everything on show at the Hornet. With thick tires and a far raised silencer in the street fighter look as well as the slim tank-seat line, Honda tried to appeal to the younger generation of drivers in particular. The experiment worked in Italy, where the Hornet led the registration statistics for the last two years, but in this country the Hornet could not displace the cheaper Bandit and the more nimble Fazer from the top positions in the middle class.
One of the reasons for the initially somewhat subdued demand is probably due to the extra-wide wheel-tire combinations, which are identical to those of the older Fireblade models (until 1999) and prevent the small Hornet from the playful turning and easy handling of the middle-class competition . In addition, the 16-inch front wheel with the controversial 130 mm tire, together with the 180 mm roller at the rear, ensures a significant tendency to stand up on bumps in an inclined position or when braking.
On the other hand, the water-cooled, nominally 94 hp four-valve engine, which comes from the CBR 600 (PC 31) from 1995 and has proven its reliability tens of thousands of times over, is beyond criticism. However, the small propellant is happy to allow itself an extra sip of the expensive fuel when driving hard.
For the year 2000, the Hornet not only received a power injection of one horsepower, but also a sister model with half-shell cladding. Both this S version and the unclad base model have been rolling off the assembly line with 17-inch rims and narrower 120 mm front tires since then. With that the complaints about chassis inconsistencies were out of the world. Also the shortcoming of the front brake system? insufficient dosage and high hand strength ?? was able to eliminate Honda with the use of different brake discs, calipers and pads as well as partially steel-sheathed brake lines.
So if you prefer a sporty, ambitious driving style, you should better look around for a 2000 model. Because the conversion of the older vintages to the larger rim diameter with the associated tires costs at least 1500 euros. For touring riders, sintered metal brake pads are helpful for the time being, as they require less manual force and more effective deceleration. Second-hand buyers who have to get in with 34 hp are also well advised to look for the corresponding variant right away, as the drioselection is time-consuming and costs around 500 euros with entry.
The Hornet is cheap for beginners with short legs anyway, with a seat height of just 770 millimeters. But it can be even lower: Honda offers a seat 20 millimeters flatter for 200 euros. This means that even young street fighters never lose their grip on the ground.

Inside interview with Herbert Strauch – Honda Hornet 600 / S

? Is converting the older Hornet model to a 17-inch front wheel often an issue? This is usually unnecessary when the customer hears the conversion price.? Does a narrower tire bring anything to the rear? Without approval, it makes no sense to fit it? The engine of the first series was considered very thirsty, and an express train also costs a surcharge. If that bothers you, you have to choose the more economical version from the year 2000 onwards.? Which version ?? naked or disguised ?? Since the debut of the S model, Hornet drivers have clearly preferred the windbreak.? What mileage do you think the engine can achieve without an engine overhaul? Generally more than 100,000th Because apart from very rare defects on the timing chain tensioner and sometimes a rectifier, I am not aware of any damage at all.

Improvement Tips – Honda Hornet 600 / S

The front brake of the first model (born in 1998/1999) seems a bit toothless, and a lot of hand force is required for a reasonably effective braking performance. The better and more suitable pads of the CBR 600 (PC 31) were unfortunately not homologated by Honda for the Hornet. The A 3 sintered metal rubbers from Carbone Lorraine are similarly effective and are priced below the original at around 65 euros per pair. Even more snappy are the SBK 3 rubbers from the same manufacturer, which cost around 80 euros (see also MOTORRAD 12/1998). Chassis For sporty driving, Hornet drivers optimize the telescopic fork with more progressive springs from Ohlins, White Power, Wilbers or Wirth in conjunction with fork oil higher viscosity. Light-weight drivers criticize the over-damped standard strut. To improve the appeal of the rear end, they swap the original for a more sensitive counterpart from the accessories trade, which costs between 400 and 800 euros, depending on the version. Wind protection For aesthetic and practical reasons, many drivers retrofit a cockpit fairing on the naked Hornet. In a comparative test (MOTORRAD 20/1999), the products from JF-Motorsport (Citystorm, 479 euros) and MBD (232 euros unpainted, paint in standard color 82 euros) provided the best wind protection and also impressed with their very good workmanship. ConversionsFor a clearer Streetfighter look, several companies offer special complete conversions: for example Bike-Side, GSG Mototechnik or Hesa. Luggage travelers get the Wingrack luggage rack system from Givi, but also from Hepco & Becker, Krauser, JF Motorsport and others will find supporters of fixed carrier systems. Many Hornet drivers, however, like it less bulky, only mount a luggage roll or a slim carrier from Roadracing (125 euros) plus a luggage bag from Bagster (116 euros). Main stand For easier chain maintenance and wheel dismantling, there are retrofitting main stands from SW Motech and JF Motorsport (from 125 euros). The Michelin pairing TX 11 / TX 23 for the 1998/99 model is preferable to the Bridgestone BT 50 when it comes to the initial tires. The Bridgestone BT 56 received even better marks. Starting with the 2000 model, the Bridgestone pair BT 020 released this year met with unreserved popularity.

Readers’ comments – Honda Hornet 600 / S

“The Hornet was too conservative for a street fighter. Some optical and chassis-related measures such as modified brakes, a tighter fork, rear elevation and Bridgestone BT 56 tires have brought a lot to the table. «Stefan Wichner, Bremen» The too small tank was noticed rather negatively, you have to switch to reserve early, as well as the lack of a main stand «Stefan Petruch, Dortmund» Visually something had to be done, because the design was more to nudge than to prick «Thomas Hoeft, Angern
