Honda Hornet 600

For exactly ten years, Honda’s hornets have swarmed the streets in droves. The range of used vehicles is correspondingly large. You are there from 2500 euros.

When the Suzuki Bandit 600 set out to stir up the middle class in 1995, the competition was caught cold. Honda was only able to counter this in 1998 with the coolly drawn Hornet. The slightly throttled four-cylinder engine from the CBR 600 (PC 31) from 1996 provided propulsion. In the first two years, the extra-wide 16-inch front wheel, taken from the then current Fireblade, was responsible for traction and also considerable pitching moment. From model year 2000, it was replaced by a conventional 17-inch model, which resulted in significantly more harmonious driving characteristics. The regular updates mainly concerned the design, smaller technical details and the adaptation to the applicable emission limit values.

From 2000 to 2004 there was the Hornet in parallel with a well protective, but optically staid half fairing ?? which clearly slowed down the success. The big cut came for the 2007 season. The completely newly developed hornet had nothing in common with its predecessors apart from the name. The most important changes: In this Hornet, the throttled engine of the current CBR 600 RR model ensures driving pleasure and not a suspended predecessor unit. The frame is made of cast aluminum instead of profane square steel tubing, and the exhaust ends in front of the rear axle and not below the rear light. For the first time, an ABS is available on request for an extra 700 euros. 2007 Hornets are not yet under the category used, but as demonstrators.

Honda’s hornets have been swarming the streets for ten years.

Visiting a Hornet is one of the simpler exercises in motorcycling life, provided that the good piece is in its original condition. Then all you have to do is check the condition of the wearing parts and look for signs of a fall, keyword: steering stop. There are no model-specific defects to complain about with the Hornet. The mechanics are extremely robust and can easily cope with high mileage. Thanks to good workmanship and high-quality materials, rust is hardly an issue. It can only be found occasionally on the lower triple clamp, and the ignition lock is too clumsy for meticulous contemporaries. A little more effort is required if the Hornet, which is often the case, has been trimmed for Streetfighter. Then it should be checked whether the handlebars, headlight masks, exhaust systems and so on match the components listed in the papers and for a later resale it is important to have the original parts handed over to you. Distinct individualism has the property of only partially meeting mass tastes, which experience has shown has no positive influence on the used price. At Hornetten’s first two years of construction, the 16-inch front wheel was sometimes swapped for a 17-inch one. This modification must be entered in the papers. There is no official report from Honda.

Market situation

With around 18,000 Hornets sold in Germany alone, there is no shortage of used vehicles. You should have 2500 euros on hand to secure a neat copy. Among them there are mostly only ridden or tinkered specimens with a dubious history. The majority of the offers are between 3,000 and 4,000 euros, but with a little luck you will find 2004 models or toothbrush-maintained bikes with four-digit mileage. Anyone looking for a throttled Hornet needs patience, as the 34 hp variant is very rare. For the last carburetor version from 2005 a minimum of 4500 euros is due. If you don’t want to do without ABS, you have to budget at least 6500 euros. But the bike is as good as new, because the anti-lock device has only been in the range since 2007. The range of the disguised S version is small, the asking prices are usually between 3,000 and 4,000 euros, as with the bare one. For this sum, you can easily get hold of copies with less than 20,000 kilometers. Drivers of the Hornet S have a poorly trained handicraft gene, which is why conversions, if at all, are limited to a main stand or another exhaust on the clad model.

Honda Hornet 900

After the concept of the Hornet worked excellently in the middle class (which has not changed until today), the conclusion was obvious to try the same one up a class, especially since the ingredients were already available. In 2002 the time had come. The functional, albeit not really beautiful, frame of the 600 series, called the mono backbone, has been reinforced at the critical points and modified to accommodate the four-cylinder engine of the 1998 Fireblade. Since maximum performance is much less of a concern than full pulling power on a bare country road bike, the engineers adapted the drive to its new area of responsibility with a modified cylinder head, smaller intake ports and an injection system instead of the carburetor battery. Lively and spontaneous, but not aggressive, he drives the Hornet forward. Thanks to the short final translation, the torque values do not even have to hide from current 1000 super athletes. The standpipe diameter of the telescopic fork increased by two to 43 millimeters compared to the 600, and the tank holds 19 liters instead of 16 liters. The ergonomics also allow longer rides, even a passenger does not feel completely out of place. Due to the bearish acceleration and the short translation, the Hornet tends to hit the handlebars on bumpy terrain, which would already list the points of criticism.

Market situation
The same applies to the great Hornet as to six hundred. Assuming the original condition, the inspection is completed with the inspection of the wearing parts and the search for traces of falls or accidents. The 900s are also often fought on the streets, pay attention to StVZO conformity. The range is sufficiently large, from 3500 euros there are accident-free copies, you do not need to spend more than 5000 euros. Unless you value the 2004 model with an adjustable telescopic fork, then you have to reckon with 5500 euros. For many offers, the mileage is between 20,000 and 30,000 kilometers. That’s not even worth a shrug from the mechanics.
