“Waste your life because you only have one thing.” If you live by this motto, you are exactly right with the machines presented here. They drink, let it smoke, put everything on one card and still spread a good mood.

There are motorcycles that don’t need to be explained. What they can do can be proven with all kinds of measurement data. The best of them are called “Test winner” or “bestseller”. And they are often outright bores. Other motorcycles, and that’s what we’re talking about here, don’t want to be explained at all. But only felt.

Or they are self-explanatory when you sit on them, run away with them or fidget around in some other way. They speak to the heart, go straight to the stomach. Sometimes they’re just good at one thing, sometimes they’re just good-looking. Nevertheless, they are winners. Because they leave a lasting impression. Or are good for an anecdote. Even conservative houses have such an entertainer in the family. And the drivers? Are they all individualists and also a little crazy? MOTORRAD asked the respective brand dealers who are looking for motorcycles on the used market that are tough on their pants. How did Goethe once say? Only rags are modest!

BMW K 1200 R.

Used advice muscle bikes

fact

Bad boy with good parents? The naked K is a bit out of line at BMW.

High-performance roadster” – such a bureaucratic advertising message could actually only come from Munich. At least that’s what the Bavarian motorcycle builders called them K 1200 R so when it was launched in 2005. Are you ashamed of what you put on your wheels? Because let’s be honest: what was presented was, atypical for BMW, sheer irrationality. A real knallerbike with a monstrous appearance. More than 160 hp, 2.25 meters long, 1.23 meters high and weighs five hundred pounds. Boah EY! Anyone who confuses this snarling wolf with the good boxers from the BMW roadster squad should go to the ophthalmologist. And to the ear doctor, because the aggro sound of the huge four-cylinder engine blows the sonorous, humming R 1150 and 1200 R so much that the driver’s helmet flies off their heads.

No, the K 1200 R is a thoroughbred muscle bike and certainly not a machine for motorcycle nerd, for whom fuel consumption, suitability for travel and a discreet appearance are virtues. It is the gauntlet of a German manufacturer that was thrown at Italian, English or even American blacksmiths, who until then had better understood how to arouse reactions below the chin line. Whereby: In addition to the brute performance and an extremely stable (duo / paralever) chassis, even brain-minded people can be inspired by exhaust gas values, seating comfort (also in the second row), heated grips or even an ABS that is rare and not at all stuffy among the competition . The 1200, which was built until 2008, was not a real bestseller. And second hand it is also a little difficult. Perhaps not enough deviants from the traditional BMW doctrine after all? Speculation. BMW is sticking to the concept and in 2009 brought an even more radical 1300 as a successor. When it comes to advertising, one is now also a little braver: “The coolest power in town drives here!” Aha…

plus:

  • Pulling power and acceleration are absolutely brilliant in this class
  • Extremely stable chassis (optionally also electronically adjustable)
  • Seating comfort extremely good

minus:

  • Fuel consumption is okay, but only an expensive Super Plus is allowed
  • Weight around 250 kilograms quite high for a sporty naked bike
  • Transmission sometimes expresses itself loudly

Market situation:
You love or hate them. Some dealers would prefer to do that “R.” Shoot directly from the salesroom to the moon because it stands like lead, others report that it has downright magnetic forces of attraction that it exerts on customers. You have to leave it that way. The fact is that the K 1200 R in some places with a decent kilometer on the clock as a demonstrator (first registration 2007/2008) is to be sold for just over 10,000 euros (new price around 14,000 euros). And if you are looking, you will also find offers from the year of construction 2005 from second or third hand for around 7,000 euros, but with over 30,000 kilometers.

Technical data (year of construction 2005):
Water-cooled four-cylinder four-stroke engine, 1157 cm³, 120 kW (163 hp) at 10250 / min, weight 247 kg, payload 203 kg, tank capacity 19 liters, seat height 810 mm, top speed 262 km / h, consumption (country road) 5.7 l / 100 km super plus

Tests in MOTORCYCLE:
10/2005 (FB), 13/2005 (TT), 20/2005 (VT), 9/2006 (VT)

Ernsting

Jochen Ernsting (49), Head of BMW Motorcycle Center Hamburg.

Wherever there are boulevards and many cafes, the R will find the right stage for a staging that attracts the public.

Hamburg and other large cities are the right place for the K 1200 R. It turns out that they are more likely to appeal to a city clientele who like to put on their pants a bit. It is considered a men’s motorcycle, and it is not for nothing that the slogan for the motorcycle was introduced in a nutshell: “Respect”. In any case, it is charming that not only prospective customers with suspenders and flip-up helmets come to the store, but also many defectors from other brands. This BMW has established itself especially in the street fighter scene – that is unusual for the brand. Nevertheless, you can see from the brisk sales of touring accessories that apparently pleasure-oriented people of reason also appreciate the machine.

Harley-Davidson V-Rod

Used advice muscle bikes

fact

The Harley with the strongest forward thrust speaks a new cruiser language.

Sometimes you have the feeling that time stands still in Milwaukee. Hardly any other motorcycle manufacturer sticks to its values as firmly as Harley-Davidson. Consequence: Even today, machines tumble off the production line that give you the feeling of “good old times” convey. From Elvis, Lollipop and, of course, from Easy Ridern. Chug leisurely, no stress, just cruising. But at the turn of the millennium, more precisely: in the summer of 2001, the hit V-Rod opens a new chapter in Harley history. It seemed to have sprung from a science fiction, because of oldies, nothing, and if so, then “In the year 2525”. Tense as a well-trained runner shortly before the 100-meter start, the around 120 hp Harley stands there like a statement, a commitment to a new era. the “revolution”-The engine, based on the racing engine of the VR 1000, differs from the 45-degree V-Twins that had been used at Harley until then in that it has a 60-degree cylinder angle, water instead of air cooling, wet instead of dry sump lubrication and was further developed at Porsche.

The V-Rod is not made of chrome as a stylistic device, but rather casual aluminum, which is brushed or polished on the tank, swing arm and trim that catches the eye. The traffic light sprinter is not a lightweight, but it drives surprisingly dynamically despite the considerable wheelbase of 1.71 meters. Power cruising is what you call this mixture of coolness, sportiness and muscle play, and that is exactly the strong discipline of this Harley. Incidentally, it was only given an ABS option in 2008. After all, all too brash acceleration excesses want to be slowed down again in a controlled manner, so not a bad idea, especially since a whopping 125 hp have been pending since then. Despite or perhaps because of its independence within the Harley family, the V-Rod is a very popular machine that particularly attracts motorcyclists, for whom the American way of life means Sunset Boulevard rather than Route 66, Red Hot Chili Peppers rather than Johnny Cash . and
the clocks are turning again in Milwaukee.

plus

  • Power output enormously linear and broadband, almost sporty
  • Ease of maintenance is also suitable for longer tours and trips
  • Stable value high, “Harley bonus”

minus

  • Reach rather modest
  • Buying it second-hand is an expensive proposition
  • Weather protection poor, because splash water from the front wheel hits the legs directly

Market situation:
It is easy to get a used V-Rod. Hundreds of them are being offered for sale on the Internet alone. However, it is extremely difficult to get a real bargain. The first models (2001/2002) have already achieved fan status with their consistently clean aluminum look. In their original condition and in the workshop, they rarely change hands for less than 11,000 euros. The broad mass is made up of models built between 2003 and 2007, which are traded between 9,000 and 15,000 euros. V-Rod with ABS (from 2008) can rarely be made out for less than 13,000 euros. However, the range of such bikes is still quite thin.

Technical specifications:
Water-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke engine, 1131 cm³, 86 kW (117 PS) at 8350 rpm, weight 285 kg, load 179 kg, tank capacity 15 liters, seat height 690 mm, top speed 221 km / h, consumption (country road) 5.8 l / 100 km normal

Tests in MOTORCYCLE:
22/2001 (TT), 24/2001 (VT), 12/2002 (VT), 17/2004 (LT), 22/2007 (TT)

Interview with a Harley dealer

Meier

Matthias Meier (40), managing director of the Harley-Factory in Frankfurt am Main.

The V-Rod is both a design icon and a traffic light alarm. That has given her cult status in just a few years.

The first customers almost ten years ago were among those who wanted to be the first to own everything. Porsche drivers and others with a sense of the exclusive. In the meantime, the V-Rod, like the Fat Boy or Road King, has built up its own group of fans. No wonder, because it offers an ideal mix of timeless beauty and the opportunity to flex your muscles at the traffic lights. This particular dragster aesthetic with wide rear tires and a short tail is what many people, especially those for whom a classic Harley has too little power. By the way, there are now a few “Silver treasures”, So the first years of construction, with almost six-digit mileage on the clock. A sign of loyalty.

Triumph Rocket III

Used advice muscle bikes

fact

Fat, fat, rocket – mammoth three-cylinder with mega torque. Impressive.

A motorcycle superlative. The largest-capacity production motorcycle on the market. Two point three liters. Almost 200 Newton meters of torque. 140 hp (but hello, we’re talking about a cruiser …). 240 slippers on the back. Monumental like ocean liners à la Queen Mary II or U.S.S. Enterprise. You stand in front of it in amazement and want to say: “My god what a part!” Nevertheless, the Rocket does not come across as scary, dresses as a bombast cruiser almost a bit too conservative. The comparatively moderate seat height could even tempt inexperienced motorcyclists to take a leisurely ride. But let me tell them: Hands off the Rocket! Even just sitting on it requires a certain amount of experience, because seven hundredweight need to be ranked with emphasis. The seat height is true, but due to the enormous overall width, even tall people can stumble with the slightest uncertainty when leaving the courtyard. And to pick up the fallen slump from the ground again is an Olympic-sized show of strength.

For the first time on the move, however, the rocket captain can feel stately. The Triumph moves majestically forward, commands from the gas hand are implemented with a force that makes your ears flicker. However, when wavy asphalt rises to dangerous surf or a series of tight bends turn into mean rapids, it takes the feeling of an experienced road shipper to get the load back on course. Otherwise there is a risk of an average. The enormous torque wave that sloshes out of the three huge, long-stroke combustion chambers was electronically limited in the lower three gears in order to nip too much cockiness in the bud. The bottom line is that the Rocket is definitely not a machine for beginners, but it is so well-behaved that not only megalomaniac cruiser fans will be happy with it. And the sovereign Rocket is also ideally suited for large cruises.

plus

  • Torque an experience
  • Range above average thanks to the large tank
  • Very generous payload, ideal for vacation tours

minus

  • Fuel consumption comparatively high even on moderate country roads
  • Handling while standing is exhausting due to its weight and expansive dimensions
  • Underdamped spring elements

Market situation:
She has undisputed touring qualities, and yet there are hardly any used machines with more than 20,000 kilometers on the clock, although the Rocket has been in the range since 2004. The average mileage is around 10,000 kilometers. With such little use, the specimens are usually perfectly cared for and should cost between 10,000 and 13,000 euros. Compared to a new purchase (around 17,000 euros), this is a good saving, which is why fans go on the hunt for the best offer. Overall, however, the market is clear, so prices remain fairly stable.

Technical specifications:
Water-cooled three-cylinder four-stroke engine, 2294 cm³, 103 kW (140 PS) at 5750 rpm, weight 362 kg, payload 223 kg, tank capacity 25 liters, seat height 740 mm, top speed 221 km / h, consumption (country road) 6.7 l / 100 km super

Tests in MOTORCYCLE:

14/2004 (FB), 16/2004 (T), 1/2006 (TT), 10/2006 (VT), 24/2007 (FB of the touring model)

Brighter

Ingo Heller (53), Managing Director Heller & Soltau, Triumph dealer, St. Michaelisdonn.

The ideal base for everyone who wants to take things a little easier, but still want to steam off properly.

The crazy thing is, all types of motorcyclists are actually sneaking around this motorcycle. The other day an almost 60-year-old with mane of hair came up to his buttocks, simply put the bills on the table and said: “I want them.” At the same time, late-comers who have never ridden a motorcycle are hard to impress by the gleaming chrome appearance. They then ask: “Great, I think that’s good, but can I drive them at all?” More often I have mature riders from Hayabusa and other powerful athletes who no longer want to be so wild but still want to attract attention. And always need steam in the boiler. Especially tall people are into the Rocket.

Yamaha MT-01

Used advice muscle bikes

fact

Power and glory: The MT-01 proves that sport and cruising can be combined.

The key data on paper make sporty drivers shy away: only 90 hp, fat 270 kilos, lame 210 peak. No flower pot can be won with it. Cruiser fans are also somewhat dismissive in front of this machine. The footrests so far back? And the aluminum swing arm looks like it came from space research – no, let it be! The Yamaha actually score with these clients. The rustic, extraordinary machine is difficult to explain. She wants to be experienced. And then both sport and pleasure drivers can experience their blue miracle. Hardly any other motorcycle on the market offers such a high level of experience. A test drive could look like this: It catapults the driver to 100 km / h in just 3.7 seconds. Oops, brake because a truck is in the way on the country road! Despite the high weight, it works stress-free thanks to the brake system adopted from the R1.

Overtake now! From 60 km / h the machine pulls up to 140 in under seven seconds like a wild ox. Wow, that’s how 150 Newton meters feel live! Now the combination of curves. With a tight, fully adjustable chassis, good feedback and plenty of grip, you can get through the terrain. It’s amazing how the imposing metal colossus swings through here. Much more powerfully motorized power cruisers such as a Suzuki M 1800 or Harley V-Rod are left behind. Back in town, drivers turn down the windows at the traffic lights so that they can better listen to the roar of the mighty bumper V-Twin. You don’t want to part with your motorcycle when parking, it’s so pretty MT-01 with lots of lovely details such as titanium silencers or high-quality aluminum panels. Right for the heart, because of Japanese functionalism. And then this processing: beautiful and noble like a samurai sword. A metal fetish – for eternal love.

plus

  • Chassis firm, fully adjustable, able to cope with the weight – phenomenal!
  • First class processing
  • Aesthetically the engine is a brilliant achievement and because of the torque it is a delight

minus

  • Oil tank very exposed in the event of a fall
  • Passenger seat with the character of an emergency seat, extremely unsuitable for longer tours or trips for two
  • Top speed only at the middle class level

Market situation:
Restrained demand despite top offer. It seems that only a targeted minority understands this machine, which has been sold around 2500 times. New machines are being hawked for around 10,000 euros, on the other hand, second-hand specimens stink off of course, despite being in a prime condition and low in kilometers, if they are only offered a thousand cheaper. The number of interested parties has increased significantly by 7500 euros, but the MT-01 is not a second-hand hit, despite all its advantages and excellent reliability. Accessories are desirable if they are of high quality and have been professionally installed.

Technical specifications:
Air-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke engine, 1670 cm³, 66 kW (90 PS) at 4750 rpm, weight 267 kg, payload 194 kg, tank capacity / reserve 15/3 liters, seat height 810 mm, top speed 210 km / h, consumption (country road) 5 , 6 l / 100 km normal

Natuschke

Klaus Natuschke (50), Managing Director of Yamaha Natuschke & Long in Delmenhorst.

What they love about the MT-01 is the engine, and because this machine is really just an engine, they adore the motorcycle.

Around a third of those interested, often not really fans of Japanese motorcycles, have several machines in their stables. You are looking for something unusual and you will find it after the first test drive at the latest. Because the motorcycle is alive. Almost half of the buyers convert to a different exhaust system. The already good sound is then nicer than the police allow. Still quite legal. In addition, the owners pamper their loved one, in this case the MT-01, with a few nice accessories such as mini indicators, anodized aluminum fittings or pretty little mirrors. What I want to say: Investments are being made lively. And that is money and time that you simply allow yourself for this motorcycle.

The best alternatives

Actually, these machines are only comparable in one point: They attract attention. Everywhere. Interested parties should not be shy of idlers, because the probability is high that the site will talk to you – in a positive sense. But even those who prefer to do without the nice gasoline chat will get on with these heart-and-soul machines. You may not be able to turn the corner perfectly, are also often looted by current cars, and it is better not to do an ancillary cost bill. But there is one thing they will certainly not bore their owners: they will be bored.
