It can do everything better than the naked K 1200 R. It is cheaper, lighter and more comfortable. And in practice it is not a bit slower than the fully clad K 1200 S. In addition, it was the first to benefit from the engine and transmission improvements made in the 2007 model year. And yet the BMW, which can only be found in the program in 2007 and 2008, got into it K 1200 R Sport to a veritable flop.

Completely undeserved and also quite incomprehensible, because it has the powerful engine and the extremely stable chassis in common with its more successful sisters, but you also sit on it much more relaxed. The full range of accessories, including the brutal-looking partially integral ABS stoppers, was of course also available for the BMW K 1200 R Sport, and yet only a few dared to ride the golden K 1200 middle ground. Was it perhaps due to the – carefully formulated – color selection that took a bit of getting used to? It was probably more of an image problem: The S stood for sport and the R for macho. There was no space in between. That gives us an insider tip for used buyers today.

Complete checkbook and evidence of recalls (“technical campaigns”) – this is hardly as important for any other brand as it is for BMW, the K 1200 R is no exception. The mechanical reliability is good, the teething problems of her S-sister are alien to her. But prospective buyers should pay particular attention to the rear-axle drive: Everything tight? If not, it can be done by changing the sealing ring (less than 200 euros). But if more lubricant has leaked out, there is a risk of bearing damage. With around 600 euros you are there. The BMW K 1200 R Sport likes to move quickly, so the brake disc wear can be correspondingly high. Very important: the condition of the tires, especially at the front. Driving with insufficient air pressure leads to profile washouts, the handiness suffers enormously. Accessory exhaust systems are popular, but not always at higher prices. Most of the performance is provided by the chunky original.

Market situation

The BMW K 1200 R Sport was a real grandfather clock when it was new and was sold out at the end of its construction period. But as is often the case with misunderstood geniuses: Over the years, respect grows and wallflowers become sought-after treasures – keyword BMW K1. The K 1200 R Sport is still a long way from being a real enthusiast, but at least the low price for used vehicles has probably passed. The prices are slowly picking up again and are already above the tariffs that are required for a comparable R sister model without paneling. In the meantime, motorcycle dealers no longer clap their hands over their heads when they are asked to trade in an R Sport. High mileage does not have to deter potential buyers, and so you can get between 6000 and 7000 euros of very decent goods with a relatively large number of kilometers, but mostly in top-quality first-hand condition. ABS is a prerequisite, and even the recommended ESA is rarely worth an extra charge for second-hand buyers. Despite the low total sales, the range of fully equipped machines is too large for that. The air for sellers is very thin for over 8000 euros, and actually only dealers who can offer guarantee services have a sales opportunity.
