Used buying tips for the Kawasaki 1400 GTR
A “you-feel-comfortable-motorcycle right away”

Every 20 years, Kawasaki is somewhat surprised to find that they actually don’t have a current tourer in their program. What to do? Reach into the athlete’s shelf and make something very sharp to match. This was also the case with the Kawasaki 1400 GTR.

Limegreen and helmet suitability? Rather little: heated grips and topcase racks are not necessarily part of the core competencies of the green heater manufacturer. As the first real tourer in the Kawasaki company history, the baroque GTR 1000 made a – to put it mildly – somewhat unfortunate figure in this country from 1986 to 2003 (In the USA it looked completely different. But that’s a different story).

The second touring attempt by the sports specialists, which began around 20 years after the GTR premiere, should be more popping. In the truest sense of the word: they made 155 hp out of 1352 cm³ 1400 GTR at its premiere in the late summer of 2007, it became the most powerful and displacement-sized tourer on the market. But before Gold Wing owners howl at this point: Yes, the scribbler is well aware that your sweethearts have significantly more combustion space to offer, but this is about tourers, not single-track apartments, commonly known as super tourers. The superlatives in “normal” Tourer segment made a potent organ donor possible: The 190 hp ZZR 1400 provided the motor base. And the monocoque frame of the low-flying aircraft should also serve as the GTR backbone. At least in the main; because, as with the engine, almost no part of the chassis was left untouched in order to make the thing suitable for touring. Just switching from chain to cardan required a lot of engineering brainpower. The result was a – surprise – sporty tourer, which could not quite meet the new sales expectations, but is even more popular as a used one.

Engine of the Kawasaki 1400 GTR

The Kawa technicians went to great lengths to get the ZZR’s sports engine, which is not exactly known for its power from the basement (keyword “Air pump”) Missing touring-suitable drivability: Smaller throttle valves, reduced compression, increased flywheel mass and above all that of the Kawasaki 1400 GTR reserved variable valve control brought the desired success. The Kawa quad takes on the gas from as little as 2,000 revs, and 1,000 revs later, things really get down to business. The GTR engine is not a steam ram, but rather a turbine with a distinctive smoothness and linear power output up to just over 10,000 rpm. The harmonious coordination is perfect for confident and brisk travel. No wonder that GTR customers are mainly recruited from experienced ex-athlete pilots who rely on the “old days” place more value on comfort, but don’t want to do without dynamic locomotion. The best sales argument for the GTR as a new machine has always been extensive test drives. And it looks exactly the same with used vehicles. Nobody has to be afraid of unforeseen stops: the mechanical reliability is excellent right from the start. 60,000 kilometers are considered in the scene as “just retracted”. If you want to know more about it, the best thing to do is to browse the busy GTR forum (www.1400gtr-forum.de).

landing gear

Fully fueled and with a full payload brings the Kawasaki 1400 GTR on the road over half a ton – and still offers agile handling, from model year 2010 even a little more agile. Heavily used tires with pronounced “Freeway edge” doesn’t like them so much and then tends to be a little wobbly in the angular work. A cleverly made swing arm with double torque support (“Tetra lever”) prevents any elevator effect, cardan reactions are hardly noticeable. The lean angle is abundant, the chassis tuning overall on the sporty, but not uncomfortable side.

Fits. Even in the long run!
