15 motorcycle buying tips for 2500 euros

Motorcycles at the official BAT tariff are a dime a dozen. In the abundance of offers there are honest everyday bikes, but also some sweethearts that have real cult potential and will develop into sought-after motorcycle enthusiasts. 15 tips for 2500 euros.

Jorg Lohse

08/02/2012

The critical consumer thinks that a decent used motorcycle can be found for two five. Basically the statement is correct, but as is so often the case, it has to be put into perspective in detail. First and foremost, the question arises as to which motorcycle category is being searched for. If you are aiming for prestigious athletes, you will not be able to really relax with the budget of 2500 euros. Up-to-date gymnastics equipment is not yet available for this use, and the older material that is offered drives like an old motorcycle. Younger objects, which would be just about possible at the price, have to be looked at more than three times in order not to get angry. During the inspection, all critical areas should be carefully scanned for signs of falling, it is best to have an experienced friend by your side to search. Furthermore, with massively rebuilt bikes, it should be critically questioned whether on the one hand fall marks should not be concealed and, on the other hand, the replacement of parts is also 100 percent legal: Are the exhaust, indicators, handlebars or pegs also type-tested and, if necessary, registered? When looking for an athlete, it could make much more sense to rely on the collector’s effect and filter out an object from the abundance of second-hand offers that is on the threshold of a cult or enthusiast motorcycle. Of course, what counts here is a well-maintained base, if possible in its original condition.

The same applies to interested parties who are looking for a large-volume travel enduro: Newer types such as a Honda Varadero or Triumph Tiger are already scratching the 2500 limit, but have been used so heavily that a four-digit investment sum is almost included in the calculation got to. Much more interesting are therefore the “large enduros” from the nineties such as Transalp, Africa Twin, DR Big or Super Tenere, all of which are considered enthusiastic objects. But here, too, a well-kept original condition should be the focus of interest in buying.

Meanwhile, chopper lovers face a major problem & Cruising. Hardly any other provider has a lucrative offer from the garage for 2500 euros. Sometimes you have to dodge the models until the late 1980s in order to even scrape together an interesting selection. In any case, only small-volume mid-range choppers are usually considered for this tariff. Real displacement hammers are in short supply at 2500 euros.

In return, however, there is a wide selection of well-maintained vehicles with an almost ridiculous mileage – considering their age.

Buyers who are simply looking for a no-frills bike to ride have the best cards. Suitable for everyday use, solid, the famous bread-and-butter product. It tastes best with two five.

Suzuki SV 650 / S.

Suzuki SV 650 / S

With the SV 650, Suzuki has – once again – reached out to the full. The SV is not just the classic bread-and-butter bike, but has also been able to build a strong fan base with its charismatic V-Twin who has remained loyal to their motorcycle for many years (contact via www.svrider.de). The 650 series can attract those interested in used with a number of tangible advantages: large selection thanks to high numbers (approx. 25,000 models in stock), often lover status with correspondingly above-average maintenance, inexpensive replacement parts procurement, many extras available, low maintenance, ideal for self-propellers. However, the naked SV shown here is much rarer to find, the S version with half-shell cladding was and remains much more popular (with a more sporty seating position). Between 1999 and 2002, the SV was delivered with round shapes and a carburettor engine, as shown here, followed by the angular generation with an injection engine from 2003. The 650 completed the MOTORRAD 50,000 kilometer test reliably, but with increased wear and tear.

Technical data: (model year 2001)
Water-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke V-engine, 645 cm³, 52 kW (71 PS) at 9000 / min, 62 Nm at 7500 / min, tubular space frame, telescopic fork, two-arm swing arm, tires 120/60 ZR 17, 160/60 ZR 17, weight 189 kg with a full tank, load 211 kg, tank capacity 16 liters, seat height 800 mm, top speed 204 km / h, consumption 4.3 l / 100 km

plus

  • Low weight thanks to the aluminum chassis and compact design
  • easy to maintain thanks to the practical folding tank
  • balanced driving dynamics appeals to beginners and old hands

minus

  • Soft fork (not adjustable until 2001), should be equipped with harder replacement springs
  • Ignition lock often gets stuck
  • Chain maintenance is made more difficult by the missing main stand

Honda Hornet 600.

Honda Hornet 600

While in this country Suzuki Bandit and Yamaha Fazer were asked, southern Europe flew on the vicious Hornet from 1998 onwards. The Honda men knitted a brisk country road sweeper around the modified engine from the CBR 600 F. In the beginning, slack brakes and idiosyncratic 16-inch front tires were a problem, but in the model update in 2000 they were exchanged for more bite (brake) and more size (17-inch model). Problematic in the lower price segment (type PC 34/36): Hornets heavily tinkered with in the streetfighter look – not just because of missing entries, keep your fingers off and search for well-kept originals. The “S” offered until 2004 is interesting for travel fans, the “new” Hornet (PC 41, from 2007) still exceeds the budget of 2500 euros.

Technical data: (model year 2003)
Water-cooled four-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 600 cm³, 71 kW (97 PS) at 12000 / min, 63 Nm at 9500 / min, central tubular frame, telescopic fork, two-arm swing arm, tires 120/70 ZR 17, 180/55 ZR 17, full tank weight 202 kg, payload 188 kg, tank capacity 17 liters, seat height 790 mm, top speed 229 km / h, consumption 5.0 l / 100 km

plus

  • Typically Honda, cleanly processed
  • long-lasting technology with good care
  • Round instruments highlighted in white (until 1999) are very easy to read

minus

  • Bikes from beginners’ hands with fall marks and damage to the clutch
  • Conversions are not always registered

Kawasaki ZRX 1100.

Kawasaki ZRX 1100

Real superbike culture for little money: Kawasaki has the right one. Offer for lovers of the old flails. The best in this case: The ZRX looks a lot like an eighties car, but it is a (modern) retro child of the late nineties. In 1997, the ZRX 1100 was launched based on the 1983 Z 1000 R by US superbiker Eddie Lawson. The second hand offer is manageable, and good specimens are quickly sold out if one of the 7000 pieces that have been sold in Germany is offered. Big-block kawa lovers are tough on their ball, especially when they are
the green and white “Replica” is involved. In 2001, the 1100 is replaced by the ZRX 1200, which is just as problem-free, but is still too expensive.

Technical data: (model year 1999)
Water-cooled four-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 1052 cm³, 78 kW (106 PS) at 9000 / min, 98 Nm at 7000 / min, double loop frame, telescopic fork, two-arm swing arm, tires 120/70 ZR 17, 170/60 ZR 17, full tank weight 249 kg, load 211 kg, tank capacity 20 liters, seat height 800 mm, top speed 224 km / h, consumption 5.1 l / 100 km

plus

  • Chassis pleases with stability, is fully adjustable
  • Four-cylinder is powerful and runs very cultivated
  • well-kept offers from enthusiasts

minus

  • Passenger footpegs installed too high
  • Main stand is missing, complicates maintenance work
  • Consumption sometimes very high

Suzuki GSX-R 750 SRAD.

Suzuki GSX-R 750 SRAD

Lively 600s or the more prestigious 1100s? Neither nor. If this tariff is about a real GSX-R, it has to be the original. After all, the 750 is the mother of all Gixxers and can proudly look back on a 27-year history. Especially since it still proves to be the better motorcycle in everyday life: no high-revving 600-cc organ, no fat clown like the GSX-R 1100 W. The GR7DB series, better known under the abbreviation SRAD (for ” Suzuki Ram Air Direct “). The hunchback said goodbye to the filigree double-loop tube of the predecessor with the hyper-modern bridge frame modeled on the Grand Prix racers. With pressure in the air snorkels it brings it to 128 hp, plus the sensational weight of 208 kilos – although the chubby rear looks like more. To quote from old tests under today’s understanding, the GSX-R 750 would not do it justice. It is much more appropriate to take possession of the SRAD version, in which the change from carburettor to injection (from year of construction 1998) was finally carried out, as a well-maintained enthusiast motorcycle.

Technical data: (model year 1998)
Water-cooled four-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 749 cm³, 99 kW (135 PS) at 12300 / min, 82 Nm at 10300 / min, bridge frame, upside-down fork, two-arm swing arm, tires 120/70 ZR 17, 190/50 ZR 17 , Weight with a full tank of 207 kg, payload 188 kg, tank capacity 18 liters, seat height 800 mm, top speed 261 km / h, consumption 8.5 l / 100 km

plus

  • Elastic motor with high revving power
  • Chassis is fully adjustable and can be adjusted cleanly
  • With good care, very durable, robust technology (therefore pay attention to a complete history when buying!)

minus

  • Under tough racing conditions, the cylinder head gasket can be chipped and blow through
  • high consumption with a sporty pace
  • Constant jerking at a slow strolling pace

Technical data: (model year 1998)
Water-cooled four-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 899 cm³, 105 kW (143 hp) at 11,000 rpm, 101 Nm at 9,000 rpm, bridge frame, upside-down fork, two-arm swing arm, tires 120/70 ZR 17, 180/55 ZR 17, weight with a full tank of 212 kg, payload 177 kg, tank capacity 19 liters, seat height 800/830 mm, top speed 274 km / h, consumption 6.6 l / 100 km

Yamaha YZF 600 R.

Yamaha YZF 600 R

The search in the 600-meter district is something for those with strong nerves. The “new” generation of supersports, which came on the market from the turn of the millennium, is available for 2500 euros, but it turns out to be mostly a major construction site: badly rebuilt, badly repainted, more badly than rightly directed after contact with the ground. Tip: shift down a gear and look for a well-maintained 600 with youngtimer potential. As reliable, comfortable and universally suitable as possible: a case for the “thunder cat”.

Technical data: (model year 2000)
Water-cooled four-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 599 cm³, 72 kW (98 PS) at 11500 rpm, 66 Nm at 9500 rpm, bridge frame, telescopic fork, two-arm swing arm, tires 120/60 ZR 17, 160/60 ZR 17, full tank weight 223 kg, load 169 kg, tank capacity 19 liters, seat height 810 mm, top speed 234 km / h, consumption 6.1 l / 100 km

plus

  • Engine cultivated and smooth running
  • Chassis comfortable and individually adjustable
  • Brakes first class and stable

minus

  • Weight very high
  • Used offers very manageable
  • Service intervals are very short at 5000 kilometers

Kawasaki ZX-9R.

Kawasaki ZX-9R

She has taken on the successful legacy of the GPZ 900 R and still cuts a fine figure as a sports grandma. In 1994, Kawa sent the ZX-9R into the race, which, in addition to its sporty properties, also scored with plenty of comfort. So if you want to use the sovereign performance of the former superbike as a fast-forward tourer, you’ve come to the right place. An extensive renovation followed in 1998, during which the main thing was to slim down. The scales showed minus 33 kilos compared to the previous model, fortunately no compromises were made in terms of comfort. Sometimes some guys got annoyed with fork flutter, especially when braking hard on an undulating slope. The remedy was “softer” brake pads with less bite.

Technical data: (model year 1998)
Water-cooled four-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 899 cm³, 105 kW (143 hp) at 11,000 rpm, 101 Nm at 9,000 rpm, bridge frame, upside-down fork, two-arm swing arm, tires 120/70 ZR 17, 180/55 ZR 17, weight with a full tank of 212 kg, payload 177 kg, tank capacity 19 liters, seat height 800/830 mm, top speed 274 km / h, consumption 6.6 l / 100 km

plus

  • Engine with beefy acceleration and explosive upward development
  • high mileage with good care
  • Ergonomics suitable for long-distance travel

minus

  • There is a risk of transmission damage if the gears jump out
  • Fork flutter when the brake pads are too snappy

Triumph Sprint ST.

Triumph Sprint ST

Phase two in the success story of Triumph: sending the triples with strong character to the road with modern technology. The Sprint ST has been delighting fast-traveling tourists since 1999. Under the full fairing, the almost one-liter three-cylinder with injection and exemplary exhaust gas cleaning by a G-Kat works with an unmistakable soundscape. The chassis appeals to brisk solo drivers as well as heavily packed travel couples. The ST could be ordered from the factory with suitcases and a topcase, but this did not find many buyers due to the high additional price. Used ones are usually offered with an accessory luggage kit.

Technical data: (model year 2000)
Water-cooled three-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 956 cm³, 77 kW (105 PS) at 9300 / min, 95 Nm at 7500 / min, bridge frame, telescopic fork, single-sided swing arm, tires 120/70 ZR 17, 180/55 ZR 17, full tank weight 242 kg, load 163 kg, tank capacity 21 liters, seat height 820 mm, top speed 237 km / h, consumption 5.5 l / 100 km

plus

  • Motor agile and reliable
  • stable technology for high mileage
  • Chassis directionally stable and suitable for travel
  • Processing in detail clean and high quality

minus

  • Luggage attachment sometimes cumbersome (exhaust pipe)
  • Payload too low for tourers

Suzuki GSF 1200 / S Bandit.

Suzuki GSF 1200 / S Bandit

Suzuki’s Volkskrad. Of the first series GV75A (1996 to 2000) over 18,000 units were sold in Germany, with the types WVA9 and WVCB (2001 to 2006) another 20,000 units were added. From this pool you can fish well with the bait of 2500 euros, whereby the special focus is of course on the first series. First question when researching: classically naked or with a half-shell suitable for touring? Possible variant: the “SA” model (from 1997) with ABS, longer swing arm, modified wheels and larger brake discs. The same for all models: the air / oil-cooled, high-torque Big Four engine with fine ribbing.

Technical data: (model year 1997)
Air / oil-cooled four-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 1157 cm³, 72 kW (98 PS) at 8500 rpm, 91 Nm at 4500 rpm, double loop frame, telescopic fork, two-arm swing arm, tires 120/70 ZR 17, 180/55 ZR 17, Weight with a full tank 244 kg, payload 206 kg, tank capacity 19 liters, seat height 820 mm, top speed 222 km / h, consumption 7.0 l / 100 km

Yamaha GTS 1000 / A.

Yamaha GTS 1000 / A

Would you like a driving study that still looks avant-garde, but is now mature for youngtimers? Then you are ready for the GTS 1000. In 1993, Yamaha wanted to stir up the motorcycle Olympics with the still unusual sports tourer and show what is technically feasible: front wheel guidance with impressive axle steering, an engine (borrowed from the FZR 1000) with electronically controlled injection, exhaust gas cleaning with a G-Kat, optionally an ABS-controlled brake system (recognizable by the model ending “A”). In the case of the chassis, too, the omega-shaped frame around the engine is unconventional. The fireworks of innovations did not really want to unfold in comparison with the competition at the time (BMW K 1100 RS, Honda CBR 1000 F or Pan European). But, hand on heart, what does it still matter today? In terms of design, the GTS remains an absolute eye-catcher, the powerful engine impresses with its smooth running and pulling power, wind and weather protection as well as the touring concept as well as the long-distance travel-compatible seating position. But you have to focus on the idiosyncratic driving behavior.

Technical data: (model year 1994)
Water-cooled four-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 1003 cm³, 72 kW (98 PS) at 9000 / min, 102 Nm at 6500 / min, Omega frame, double-pivot steering, two-arm swing arm, tires 130/60 ZR 17, 170/60 ZR 17, weight 290 kg with a full tank, load 210 kg, tank capacity 20 liters, seat height 780 mm, top speed 228 km / h, consumption 7.3 l / 100 km

plus

  • Elastic sports engine with plenty of torque
  • The chassis remains stable even with a high payload
  • Seating position for driver and pillion with plenty of space
  • ABS regulates very finely; Lush payload

minus

  • Chassis designed very tightly and too unwieldy for alpine tourists
  • Chain drive does not fit the touring concept
  • stubborn 130 front tire, should be converted to 120 (certificate available)

BMW R 1100 GS.

BMW R 1100 GS
Quickly secure the original before the air-cooled boxer generation ticks out and the GS with water boxer plows the area. The first four-valve GS started in 1994 and became the meaningful success model of the Bayerische Motoren Werke. By 1999 almost 22,000 R 1100 GS motorcycles had been sold in Germany. From the factory, it remained optically unchanged (except for a change of color), but the owners moved it to grips with it and frantically shortened beaks and discs. The following applies to these craft shops: hands off, even if a comparatively low mileage is tempting. It is better to return to the original condition with a complete history. You can also put up with many kilometers.

Technical data: (model year 1994)
Air / oil-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke boxer engine, 1085 cm³, 59 kW (80 PS) at 6750 / min, 97 Nm at 5250 / min, load-bearing engine-gear unit, telescopic fork with trailing arm, single-sided swing arm, 110/80 H 19 tires , 150/70 H 17, weight with full tank 260 kg, load 190 kg, tank capacity 25 liters, seat height 840 mm, top speed 199 km / h, consumption 5.0 l / 100 km

plus

  • Robust, easily accessible boxer engine suitable for do-it-yourself screwdrivers
  • Cardan drive clean and low-maintenance
  • many extras mostly included

minus

  • High mileage is usually the rule
  • many custom conversions reduce the choice considerably

Kawasaki KLR 650.

Kawasaki KLR 650

For all those who still have a light, compact single-cylinder in mind when it comes to enduro and who value a year of construction that is as young as possible, the KLR stew is recommended in the price range 2500 euros. After all, the 650 series remained in the program until 2004, and prospective buyers can speculate on the last single, which cost 5000 euros, on a young year of construction, few kilometers and mostly first ownership. The plow horse looks authentic, but in practice neither the engine nor the chassis can convince as real off-roaders. It gets tough on the road from a speed of 100 km / h, long-distance travel is not advisable. In return, the Kawa scores points all year round as a refreshingly green substitute for local transport.

Technical data: (model year 2002)
Water-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke engine, 652 cm³, 31 kW (42 PS) at 7000 / min, 47 Nm at 5000 / min, single-loop frame, telescopic fork, two-arm swing arm, tires 90 / 90-21, 120 / 90-17, weight fully fueled 186 kg, payload 184 kg, tank capacity 14 liters, seat height 870 mm, top speed 151 km / h, consumption 5.8 l / 100 km

plus

  • Suitable for beginners with a 34 hp throttle
  • manageable technology
  • inexpensive to maintain
  • to get used for little money as young

minus

  • Fork and shock absorber quickly overwhelmed in real off-road use
  • high handlebars make enduro insoles difficult

Yamaha XTZ 750 Super Tenere.

Yamaha XTZ 750 Super Tenere

With the XT 1200 Z Super Tenere presented in 2011, Yamaha wants to build on glorious times when the sonorous name was at home in the deserts of this world. For example in 1991, when the competition version of the 750 series took the first three places in the legendary Paris Dakar Rally. The Super Tenere was introduced in 1988 and remained in the program until 1996. The two-cylinder enduro quickly established itself on a par with competitors such as the Honda Africa Twin and is now an equally sought-after enthusiast motorcycle. The fact that she radically broke with the usual ideas that one had of an enduro is shown by her key data: Like the four-cylinder engines from street bikes, the in-line twin is also equipped with five valves per cylinder. The power output is remarkable: 69 hp, 4.9 seconds when sprinting from standstill to 100 km / h and almost 180 as the top value on the speedometer make it clear that her home is by no means the difficult terrain. Although the look with bellows on the fork, engine pan and hand protectors is tailored to off-road use: high weight, high center of gravity and the bulky tank thwart this enormously in practice. When searching, you should invest time, hide ridden conversions and focus on well-kept originals.

Technical data: (model year 1989)
Water-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 749 cm³, 51 kW (69 PS) at 7500 / min, 67 Nm at 6750 / min, double loop frame, telescopic fork, two-arm swing arm, tires 90 / 90-21, 140 / 80-17, weight with a full tank 234 kg, load 176 kg, tank capacity 26 liters, seat height 865 mm, top speed 177 km / h, consumption 8.5 l / 100 km

plus

  • Engine with cultivated running, elastic and powerful
  • Long-distance travel qualities with a long range and from 1990 also feasible in two-person operation
  • Stable braking system from model year 1990

minus

  • A high seating position does not offer smaller drivers a secure stance
  • The protruding rear makes it difficult to fit suitcases
  • high consumption even at a cautious pace

Suzuki VS 800 Intruder

Suzuki VS 800 Intruder

If a name has established itself alongside Harley-Davidson in the chopper area, it is Aunt Trude’s. The predecessor model of the VS 800 Intruder presented here appeared as the VS 750 as early as 1986. The motor then formed the basis for the classically drawn naked bike VX 800, which went into stores in 1990. Two years later, the engine was finally reimported into the long fork chassis, and the mid-range Suzuki chopper roared through the country with 805 cubic meters. In terms of style, Suzuki’s Intruder line was not based on an evil, blooming Baroque style, but rather in a Spartan style. As a real eye-catcher, the classically styled, finely ribbed Vauzwo comes into the limelight on the Intruder and skilfully conceals the modern water cooling. Shiny chrome is grouped around it, and the low-maintenance cardan also ensures relaxed cleaning orgies. The chassis still works relaxed at a slow pace, only when more speed is picked up does the Easy Rider struggle with the 21-inch front wheel – which is typical of the genre for the vehicle type at the time. The same applies to a trip for two. The motorization and payload would be sufficient, but from an ergonomic point of view, the intimate togetherness with Aunt Trude is a disaster. The second-hand offer is impressive.

Technical data: (model year 1992)
Water-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke V-engine, 805 cm³, 37 kW (50 PS) at 6400 / min, 63 Nm at 4000 / min, double loop frame, telescopic fork, two-arm swing arm, tires 80 / 90-21, 140 / 90-15, weight Fully fueled 219 kg, payload 191 kg, tank capacity 12 liters, seat height 740 mm, top speed 154 km / h, consumption 6.7 l / 100 km

plus

  • Powerful motor, very stable thanks to water cooling
  • Typical exhaust sound, robust for a V2
  • Second-hand offers above average well-maintained and with very low mileage

minus

  • Short range due to the small tank and high consumption
  • last (fifth) gear ratio too short; Lean angle is low
  • Brake with a very spongy effect

Moto Guzzi Nevada 750.

Moto Guzzi Nevada 750

Do the originals always have to come from the USA and the replicas always from Japan? How about an authentic Italian in a soft chopper dress? Amazing stamina must be attributed to the Guzzi offer for Easy Rider. First on stage in 1993 and of course repeatedly modified over the years as “Nevada Classic” in the program to this day. If you look very closely, you will not only see the softly washed soft chopper look of the eighties, but also find slight references to the muscle bikes that were becoming popular at the time – keyword Yamaha Vmax. Even if the cult brand from Lake Como got involved in the wild copy business: The Nevada is and will remain an original.

Technical data: (model year 1997)
Air-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke V-engine, 744 cm³, 36 kW (49 PS) at 6200 / min, 61 Nm at 3000 / min, double loop frame, telescopic fork, two-arm swing arm, tires 100/90 V 18, 130/90 V 16, weight 197 kg fully fueled, 203 kg payload, 16 liter tank capacity, seat height 770 mm, top speed 163 km / h, consumption 5.4 l / 100 km

plus

  • Driving behavior very lively, anything but chopper-like
  • Sound authentic and typical Guzzi
  • throttled also suitable for novice drivers
  • with a windshield and suitcases quite suitable for touring

minus

  • Not easy to find as a well-kept used one

Yamaha XV 535 / S Virago.

Yamaha XV 535 / S Virago

For many years, the small Yamaha held its own at the top of the motorcycle fleet in Germany. No wonder, since it was on everyone’s lips and in every hand as a popular driving school machine over an extremely long construction period (1988 to 2004). For our budget planning of 2500 euros, the XV 535 has the huge advantage that it can be fished from a huge stock. Although the XV can no longer keep up with the current chopper gigantomania with standard displacements of two liters, it is attractive as a stress-free recreational vehicle with a robust motor, low weight and easy-care cardan drive. The Virago is available in mint condition with four-digit mileage for 2500 euros.

Technical data: (model year 1996)
