Second-hand advice: Aprilia RSV Mille
Strong V2 heart, great chassis

Compete against Ducati and the Japanese in the sports segment – brave, brave! But Aprilia proved with the RSV Mille that you can pour the established competition with a formidable chassis and robust V2.

Thorsten Dentges

02/05/2013

Aprilia builds a fat four-stroke athlete – hardly anyone expected that in the mid-nineties, because the manufacturer from Noale in northern Italy was known for scooters, toxic two-stroke syringes and single-cylinder travel enduros. Sports connoisseurs could of course list all Grand Prix victories, so it was not entirely absurd in 1998 that Aprilia with a 1000 super athlete, the RSV mille. What was really surprising, however, was the motorcycle itself. One had reckoned (read: the usual black painters) rather with an Italian capricious machine, one that blows apart after a couple of full throttle orgies or at least needs experienced mechanic hands to relax.

But puff cake Aprilia ran, and she ran damn fast from the start, and it didn’t break. In terms of workmanship and engine reliability, the Mille proves to be at its best. And in terms of driving dynamics, it can bring skeptics to its side after a test drive at the latest. No need to get used to it, thrilling handling, the motorcycle seemed to find the ideal line by itself. In addition, a homogeneous output of a good 120 PS from the 60-degree V2 manufactured by Rotax in Austria – everything fits. First class: Upside-down fork, polished aluminum bridge frame, artfully formed, light aluminum swingarm, sparkling clean welds, perfectly fitting plastic parts.

Aprilia RSV 1000 R: As of 2004, the new type RR is no longer officially called “Mille”. Comes with 139 instead of 125 hp and two mufflers.

With its rough charm, a pleasant smell of racing stables and enough Italian flair as well as a flawless workmanship, this strong four-stroke V2 sports car also convinced drivers who had previously exclusively relied on Japanese four-cylinder engines. For those who are particularly sporty among them, from 2000 Aprilia also offered an R version with forged wheels from OZ, carbon parts and Ohlins chassis for a surcharge (the equivalent of around 3500 euros), previously (1999) the highly exclusive SP series for the equivalent of almost 30,000 euros. These publicly accessible factory racers were only treated by a few at the time, but the shine of the special also shone on the Standard Mille.

The machine sold well until 2003, with around 5000 units sold. But quarrels over the supply of spare parts ruined Aprilia’s reputation at the time. The new type RR from 2004 – henceforth RSV 1000 R written, but still simply called “Mille” – was no longer popular among sports motorcycle buyers, despite more power (almost 140 hp). Even the Factory, which was pimped up with light wheels, carbon parts and fine Ohlins chassis, could not really ignite. From then on, the 1000 two-cylinder machine was only sold at the level of small special series, only a few hundred units per year. In 2009 the construction stop of this really fun and good sports machine followed. Aprilia had another surprise in store: the four-cylinder Brumme RSV4 with 180 hp.

Italian, two-cylinder, sporty? Hardly anyone has the term “durable” on their radar. But that’s true with the Mille. The motorcycle runs and runs, is hard to break. A connoisseur reports that after buying a newer RSV4, some Aprilia fans kept their old two-cylinder RSV as an everyday or purely racetrack machine and now have over 80,000 kilometers on the clock. Ordinary maintenance is a prerequisite, however, every 7500 kilometers or every 10000 kilometers for the models of the type RR from 2004 a (professional) check is due. The 20,000 inspection requires four mechanic hours plus parts costs, which can quickly cost 500 euros and more, so be careful when buying!

Warped brake discs sometimes cause problems. The biggest problem with this motorcycle, however, is damage caused by falls (racetrack) and quirks caused by falling over. When falling to the right, the exhaust quickly makes a dent in the thin-walled aluminum swingarm, which, strictly speaking, is then ready for scrap, and the brake levers also make marks on the frame, which are also tricky and not uncommon, so: keep your eyes open! Pay particular attention to the exhaust when using accessories. If the original silencer has been replaced by a non-approved sports pipe, the procurement of a legal replacement is usually not cheap, so it is better to check whether the series pot is available

Market situation

Between cheap beating for the racetrack and noble bike for collectors – the two-cylinder RSV is offered extremely differently on the used market. For the older models (type ME) there is a large number of interested parties who are looking for a solid and inexpensive base for racing training and who know about the reliability and great driving behavior of the Mille. However, they do not want to pay more than 3000 euros, preferring a few scratches or a high mileage (over 50,000 kilometers). At this price level, trading often goes from private to private. R models are rarely on offer for the money.

Country road pilots with a penchant for Italo tend to spend 4,000 to 5,000 euros for a neat Mille with a checkbook that shouldn’t have run 30,000 kilometers if possible. Good Mille-R models or the newer RR types (from 2004) can also be identified in the advertisements in this price range. For a factory or a well-maintained standard RSV 1000 R built from 2006 onwards with less than 15,000 kilometers, the price is at least 5,000 euros. Even die-hard Mille fans will probably not pay more than 8,500 euros, even if the machine is nicely spruced up.
