The Gixxer from 2005 to 2010
Advice: Used Suzuki GSX-R 1000

Content of

It enjoys a good reputation with sports drivers, is strong as a bear, reliable and can be bought second-hand very cheaply. The Suzuki GSX-R 1000 is a real used treasure – if you pay attention to a few things.

Volkmar Jacob

December 21, 2010

The really interesting ones GSX-R 1000 were built from 2005. They form a perfect synthesis of contemporary technology, plenty of performance and affordable price. In this second-hand advice we present vintage 2005 to 2010: six years, three models. So far, a new type has always appeared in the odd years, and two years are identical. This results in the following technically identical pairings: 2005/2006, 2007/2008 and 2009/2010. The scene often only designates the models with their official abbreviations: K5 stands for the year of construction 2005, K6 for 2006 and so on. With the beginning of this decade comes the letter “L.” in the game. So the 2010 model runs under L0.

Each of the three differently constructed engines is considered to be very reliable. Proper handling such as careful warm-up and punctual oil changes – every 6000 kilometers in normal operation – provided. How hard-wearing the propellant of the K5 is is underlined by an endurance test over 50,000 kilometers by our sister magazine MOTORRAD. Result: Reassemble the dismantled engine unchanged and continue driving. The colleagues sometimes put the Kilo-Gixxer on hard, also on the racetrack. And the PS crew tormented Suzi for a large exhaust test with over 170 test bench runs!

Denis Hertrampf from the Lower Saxon dealer Suzukiplus also certifies the highest level of reliability for the other two engines: “The various GSX-R 1000 engines are very popular with sidecars due to their robustness. Most racing machines have this type of drive.”

It is still considered a brilliant super sports car: The Suzuki GSX-R 1000 from 2005.

“A great bike, the engine runs like hell, the thousands cause zero problems”, enthuses Thomas Rothmund, through whose hands quite a few Gixxers have already wandered. In fact, the K5 / K6 enjoys cult status not only with the workshop manager of Motorrad Beck in Freudenstadt. It still draws on the nimbus of invincibility that the K5 acquired when it was launched with test victories like on an assembly line. Its silky-smooth engine, the wide usable speed range and the creamy throttle response are unparalleled to this day.

Weak points? Fortunately, there are only a few. In 2009, Suzuki called the K5 / K6 to the workshops, as hairline cracks appeared on the frame in the area of the upper motor mount / steering head. “Just a precautionary measure. We examined around 200 frames and found none of them to be defective”, says Hertrampf. Nevertheless, retrofitting with stiffening struts was mandatory, otherwise the operating license would expire. When buying, it is essential to pay attention to the conversion campaign that has been carried out.

In rare cases the K5 / K6 is plagued by a dragging clutch. Tip: Install the first steel disc including the small spring from the clutch package of the successor model (K7), use high-quality oil, done.

Tires are of course always an issue for sports drivers. Unfortunately, the standard Bridgestone BT 014 do not harmonize particularly well with the Gixxer. At large lean angles, the bike begins to slip over the front wheel. The latest generation of rubbers help here. “Interested parties should contact the manufacturer directly for approvals. Dealers often sell off their old stock of tires and withhold approvals for modern rubbers”, knows Karl Ensmann, operator of the homepage www.gsx-r1000.net.

A PS-Tune-Up from 2006 brought valuable knowledge for an even better K5 / K6: The windscreen provides a remedy for the standard windshield “Aeromax” of the company Ermax. Replacing the standard muffler also brings a lot. The top performer “Bodi’s oval Q1” with a general operating permit (ABE) tickled a whopping five additional horsepower from the thousand and is over two kilograms lighter than the series system. A good deal for 500 euros!

The original footrests sit far in front and above. We recommend the accessory pegs “as 31 gt” from Gilles Tooling, as they offer a wide adjustment range and excellent workmanship. Even sporty road milling cannot harm the standard suspension elements. For racing use or for people who love something special, we recommend going to the chassis specialist. Ohlins, WP Suspension and HH Racetech make the K5 / K6 a powerful weapon.

During racing, the brake pads of the front wheel are permanently in contact with the discs, as the original light alloy brake pistons do not retract far enough into the saddle when the load is high. This makes the bike difficult to run and the system overheats. Steel pistons coated with carbon or a revision of the original brake calipers guarantee perfect function. Keyword racing: Anyone looking for an inexpensive, powerful racing machine for hobby purposes is well served with the K5 / K6. The new owner finds a flood of used racing parts on the spare parts market.

The first Gixxer to comply with the 2007 Euro 3 emissions standards.

In 2007 the Euro 3 standard came into force. Since then, stricter emission values have been in effect, which the Gixxer brought with a huge 4-in-2 exhaust system and a noticeable drop in power and torque at medium speeds. Unfortunately, the attractive 4-in-1 exhaust systems from the accessories trade do not have an ABE. If you want to give your bike a slim 4-in-2 system, you can turn to accessory specialists. We particularly recommend the pots from Akrapovic (model: Hexagonal Titan, 1410 euros), Yoshimura (GP Evo II, 1600 euros), or Bos (slip-on stainless steel, 800 euros). In addition to their attractive appearance, all three systems offer a good synthesis of weight, fit and workmanship. The inexpensive system from Bos even gives the K7 / K8 three additional horsepower.

“For the racetrack, the massive collector between the original manifold and the muffler is dismantled and a connector without catalytic converters and throttle valves is installed instead. They are available from Bos or Bodis”, knows Suzukiplus man Hertrampf. The expert continues: “Then put on a suitable muffler, tune the engine electronics, and you have more power and torque everywhere.” Hobby mechanics can also assemble the exhaust. We recommend a specialist for interventions in the engine control.

When it comes to racing, the same applies to the brake system of the K7 / K8 as to its predecessors: have the brake calipers revised or the brake piston replaced. Tip: The racing windshields from the accessories from Suzuki and MRA offer much better wind protection than the flat original windshield.

With the very first K7, the Japanese replaced the entire engine control unit and the idle control valve as part of a conversion campaign. The same applies here: Ask the seller whether these conversion campaigns have been carried out.

Since it did not have good sales figures, the Gixxer from 2010 are relatively cheap.

The current model series shines with elegant restraint: no recalls, no problems, no scandals. Great! It is also considered to be very robust, even racing does not seem to be able to harm it. The pistons of the new brake calipers work perfectly even under racing stress, only the somewhat dull pads are annoying. And the new big piston fork doesn’t exactly shine with the finest responsiveness. A conversion by Hertrampf, for example, for 900 euros transforms the fork with its innovative technology into a gem.

Unfortunately, the K9 / L0 has not found too many fans so far. Individual dealers are squandering brand new K9s with daily registration for less than 10,000 euros. “At the moment there is a huge range of new and used vehicles”, explains Klaus Limbacher, co-owner of a large motorcycle shop near Stuttgart. Limbacher continues: “This is especially true for sporty machines.” So if you are looking for a super sports car with power, which is reliable and almost indestructible, and which also attracts you with sensationally low prices, you should definitely shortlist the GSX-R 1000 from this model year.

The performance diagram of all three Gixxers.

The diagram clearly shows the different performance development of the K5 / K6 and the other two models. At medium speeds, the older bike has a clear lead. This can be clearly felt in everyday life. In part, the power and torque deficit between 3500 rpm and 9000 rpm in the younger model series is due to the stricter Euro 3 standard that has been in force since 2007. Suzuki probably sacrificed some midrange power in favor of a higher maximum output – greetings from the arms race. Suzuki connoisseurs assure that the two younger engines are basically just as powerful as the drive from 2005/2006.
