These bikes are particularly cheap at the moment

Are you still desperately wondering why you should chop out all that lavish Christmas bonus and the sensational savings account interest? We have some nice ideas for you.

Stories like this hate the manufacturers, importers and also many dealers of motorcycles. On the one hand. On the other hand, the clever ones among the sales professionals have also understood that such a market overview might lure one or the other customer into the store who until recently did not even know that he actually needed a new motorcycle. Special offers seduce, that is the case with the food or electronics discounter, and it is no different with the motorcycle dealer. With the difference that our favorite hobby is a seasonal business, where the customer does not fall into a shopping frenzy at the end of the year, but rather goes into hibernation.

The seasonal fluctuations in the two-wheeler business are no longer as pronounced as they were perhaps 15 or 20 years ago, but nothing has changed about the fact that with the turn of the year every motorcycle that has already been produced is one year older. And it is precisely these machines that this story is about, which by no means wants to speak out against the unspeakable greed-is-cool mentality. On the contrary, the point here is to reveal to readers who are fundamentally interested in a new machine where it is worth asking and where, in the end, hopefully two satisfied people have entered into a long-term business relationship.

In typical marketing parlance, this is called a “win-win situation”: the buyer saves a lot, and the dealer gets machines from the yard that really hurt. And ideally, he wins a workshop and accessories customer who otherwise might only have bought a privately owned used machine.

All manufacturers (with the exception of Harley-Davidson) have grandfather clocks and thus potential bargain offers in their product range, because no model range is so homogeneous that it only consists of bestsellers. In very few cases this has anything to do with bad model policy, because there are market-economy developments and fashion trends that the most caring model planners cannot take into account. The development of a new motorcycle and its market launch take time, usually several years, and a few years ago no one could foresee that, for example, the southern European markets would collapse brutally due to the economic crisis and thus pile up motorcycle surplus. Sometimes customer tastes change much faster than expected. For example, the BMW single-cylinder models were solid bestsellers for years, but the singles are currently running flat – and nobody really knows why that is.

It doesn’t matter to the customer, he wants to get a new machine as cheaply as possible. In order to be able to assess what is actually included in price negotiations, a little basic knowledge helps. Here you go: The dealer’s margin for new machines is between 13 and 20 percent, depending on the brand and model – in practice it is usually closer to 13 and only very rarely 20 percent. But that only applies to absolutely smooth transactions that actually never exist. Every discount, every addition, every excessive trade-in for a used machine has a direct impact on the margin. A double-digit yield is then the very big exception, it usually stays in the manageable single-digit range. And we’re not talking about profit, because this is how staff, rent, financing costs and advertising have to be paid for.

BMW

List price 7650 euros, market price 6500 euros.

So anyone who assumes that the dealer easily earns 2,000 to 3,000 euros when selling a 15,000-euro motorcycle has not understood anything. The fact that the bottom line is only 200 to 300 euros is more in line with practice. The dealer speculates on the later workshop and parts business, and in many cases he usually earns more with the sale of a high-quality textile suit and a branded helmet than with the motorcycle.

But how does it come about that some motorcycles can be offered a few thousand euros cheaper? Because, for example, in addition to the retailer, the importer and / or manufacturer also forego part of their margin as part of a special offer. This can be done directly by lowering the purchase price or indirectly by paying out registration premiums, and it almost always happens when really old new machines are still in stock. So currently still 2009 to 2011 models, of which there are still quite a few, especially among the Japanese.

Keyword bonuses: Practically every dealer agrees on targets with his supplier (i.e. the motorcycle importer or manufacturer). By the end of the year he has to sell a number x of motorcycles so that he can continue to receive certain purchase conditions. In October or November at the latest, the dealer can foresee whether he will be able to meet the agreed number of items, and if sales are still missing, some dealers will go through almost every mess so that they can get their number together. Specifically, this means: Better to do a few more zero deals this year than risk the bonus or have worse purchasing conditions next year.

It is of course very tempting for the customer in such situations to try to bargain down the battered dealer down to his undershirt. This is called a free market economy and would be completely legitimate. So if you do not attach importance to short-term workshop appointments, promisingly formulated goodwill requests, the fastest possible supply of spare parts or breakdown assistance on Friday evening in the next few years, you should be happy to do so. Whether a stinginess-is-cool mentality, lived out to excess, is particularly smart in the long run is another matter. Which brings us to a very important tip when it comes to negotiating tactics: If you come into the store and ask for a discount first, you are not being particularly clever. If you treat your counterpart as a discount and not a motorcycle seller, you shouldn’t be surprised to bite into granite at an early stage during price discussions. Much better: get advice in peace, try it out and, if necessary, drive, choose accessories – and only ask for a “house price” or a “package solution” at the very end.

And please do not forget that the air for the retailer becomes significantly thinner if you also agree on special interest rates. Namely, these are sponsored conditions in which the dealers participate and who have already missed part of their margin. As a rough guide, consumer credit currently averages around 5.5 to 6.5 percent APR. Offers at motorcycle dealers that rank well below this are in any case disguised sales aids. These are particularly useful when you have not piled the cash under your pillow and the payment of the purchase price is to be spread over a longer period of time. There are two classic options for this: conventional financing, in which the entire financing amount is paid off in equal installments over the entire term. More and more popular: the “target financing”, often also called “balloon financing”. You usually make a down payment of around 20 percent, then pay very low installments, which often only include the financing costs, but no or only minimal repayment, and at the end a relatively high final installment. The advantage of this solution: if you know exactly that you will have the final amount available at the end of the term, you only have to pay relatively small installments until then and still drive a new motorcycle.

Potential slow moving:
The 2011 model of the Dorsoduro 1200 is available from 8500 euros (list price 11,500 euros). For a NA 850 Mana that has been standing for a little longer, you pay from 8,000 euros – at least just under two mille below the list. Attention: From time to time models from the previous year are advertised with the pictures of current models, and the procurement route is not always that clear (“gray imports”).

Unofficial offers

Previous / discontinued models:
The F 800 ST will be replaced by the F 800 GT in 2013. There are still very few well-equipped demonstrators standing around who can save around 1000 euros. The bestseller R 1200 GS turns into a water boxer – price alarm? not yet.

Potential slow moving:
G 650 GS and its Enduro sister Sertão are real grandfather clocks. From 5900 or 6500 euros you are there (list 7300/8050 euros). The R 1200 RT is also longer, as is the S 1000 RR, surprisingly.

Conclusion

Of course, market leader BMW does not officially have any problem children, but the single-cylinders are still like lead, and even an ex-bestseller like the S 1000 RR is 20% below the list as a young demonstrator.

Unofficial offers

Previous / discontinued models:
The Hypermotard 796 no longer appears in the 2013 price list and is only sold. The Hypermotard 1100 will also be replaced by the 821 Hypermotard.

Potential slow moving:
With a little bit of negotiation skills, the big Hypermotard can be obtained for less than 10,000 euros (list price 11,750 euros), with a little luck you can save 800 to 1,000 euros with its little sister (list 9,090 euros). There are some demonstrators of the Diavel standing around with very few kilometers and cost around 1000 to 1500 euros less than a brand new one (2012 list price from 16,690 euros).

Conclusion

Bad times for bargain hunters: apart from the aforementioned Hypermotard discontinued models, there are no special offers. Some cheap daily admissions and young demonstrators can still be shot.

Unofficial offers

Previous / discontinued models:
The XL 1200 N Nightster and the XR 1200 X were taken out of the program for 2013, as was the Electra Glide Classic and the V-Rod anniversary model. But what would lead to sale offers for all other brands has practically no effect on prices at Harley.

Potential slow moving:
It just doesn’t exist at Harley. Even the discontinued models were mostly sold at full list price until the end, at best there was a handlebar conversion or an accessory exhaust. If anything, the only additions to be made from the dealer are demonstrators or display machines. But there is also good news: even if you pay the full list price, you hardly lose any money compared to other brands, the value retention is simply excellent.

Conclusion

Dear Yamaha dealers: In your next life, please see to it that you can get hold of a Harley dealer contract. The Americans now have to sell too, but they don’t have to give anything away.

Previous / discontinued models:
String concert in the house of Honda, CBR 250 R, Transalp, Deauville and the bizarre chopper VT 1300 CX were thrown out; the VFR is no longer being built and is only being sold.

Potential slow moving:
CBR 250 R as demonstrator from 3500 euros (list 4490 euros); Transalp from 7000 instead of 8390 euros; Deauville around 1000 euros cheaper (list 10 190 euros); VT 1300 CX even 2000 euros below the list price of 13990 euros; Crossrunner from 9,000 instead of 10,790 euros.

Conclusion

A hit for bargain hunters, a discount offer can be found in the Honda range for every type of driver. The price discipline of many retailers is not excessively pronounced, it is sold off.

Previous / discontinued models:
The Ninja 250 R gives way to the Ninja 300, the Z 800 replaces the Z 750. The ZX-6R gets an in-house competitor model with the ZX-6R 636.

Potential slow moving:
Kawa officially offers 2011 and many 2012 models well below the list, the dealers usually add a little more. Really hot: ZX-10 R and ZZR 1400.

Conclusion
Super athletes and sports tourers for 4000 euros below the list price? at Kawasaki no problem. But also the naked, cruiser and retro fans are spoiled by the Greens with great bargain offers.

Unofficial offers

Previous / discontinued models:
The 990 Supermoto T is no longer available in 2013; the 990 Adventure was replaced by the 1190s. And the successor to the 990 Superduke R is already known – which will not necessarily boost sales of the current model.

Potential slow moving:
The RC8 is the permanent bargain in the KTM range. A savings of 1500 to 1800 euros compared to the list price (16295 euros) should always be possible for a 2012 model. With the 990 Adventure you can even save 2000 euros with a daily registration or a very fresh demonstrator (list 13795 euros). The 990 Supermoto T is available relatively easily at 1,300 euros below the list price of 12,795 euros.

Conclusion
The Austrians are among the clear winners in 2012 and are now ahead of Yamaha in the approval chart. There are no official bargains, the price tip is demonstrator / short approval.

Financing offers:
1.99% effective annual interest, terms 12 to 60 months, possible without down payment.

Unofficial offers

Previous / discontinued models:
Gotterdammerung for the Bandit: The 650s flies out completely, the 1250s are only available in 2013 as a half-boarded S. Also it’s time for the Intruder M 800 and the B-King.

Potential slow moving:
GSX-R 1000 as a 2009, 2010 or 2011 new machine for 10,000 to 11,000 euros (list 14,000-15,000 euros); B-King for 12,000 instead of 14,490 euros; Bandit 650 S for sometimes well under 6000 instead of 7350 euros.

Conclusion

Suzuki is missing over 1000 registrations compared to last year, and there are still some very old new machines at the dealerships. That pushes. Officially, little is possible, but unofficially, all the more.

Accessories and / or clothing worth 675 euros as a bonus for Daytona 675, Street Triple / R and Tiger 800 / X or worth 750 euros for Sprint GT and Thunderbird 1600. Free equipment packages for 2012 Street Triple / R models and Speed Triple (including flyscreen and front spoiler).

Financing offers:
3.99 or 4.99% APR for the above Models.

Unofficial offers

Previous / discontinued models:
Street Triple and Daytona 675 got a makeover for 2013.

Potential slow moving:
The two-cylinder classics are not really selling well. The Tiger 1050 and especially the Sprint GT have actually become superfluous due to more modern in-house competition. The Sprint GT is available for less than ten Mille and thus more than 2000 euros cheaper.

Conclusion

Officially peace, joy, pancakes. Unofficially, there is rumbling in part of the dealership. Some veteran dealers will (have to) give up in the foreseeable future. Unrest on the price front? Possible.

Unofficial offers

Previous / discontinued models:
One of the last real Yamaha character actors will be dropped from the program for 2013 – the MT-01 is history. Which – in contrast to most of the rest of the Yamaha program – should lead to a price stabilization for the remaining stocks.

Potential slow moving:
How about a TDM 900 for 8900 instead of 11095 euros? Or a well-seasoned, but still brand new R1 for less than 12,000 euros? Is feasible, because there are still various 2009 to 2011 models at the dealers. The FJR 1300 is unofficially offered for less than 14,000 instead of 17,395 euros. The list could be continued indefinitely, and it almost seems like a mockery that Yamaha Couldn’t say anything specific about the official MOTORRAD bargain request.

Conclusion

All other Japanese sell more. Harley sells more. And even KTM is bringing more new machines to the people. What happened to this once proud brand? A single tragedy. Unfortunately.

Exotic bargains

manufacturer

List price 12,990 euros, market price 9,990 euros.

You are now over 40 years old, have already driven everything from Japan, at times annoyed a little about BMW and dreamed of a Harley for a short time? And yet you have the feeling that that couldn’t have been all? Well, then you are due for an exotic one, also as a second or seventh machine. And there are now quite a few of them at bargain prices. Anyone browsing the admission hit parade beyond tenth place stumbles across traditional brands such as Moto Guzzi (where a new California comes and can save over 2000 euros with the previous model), Benelli (where especially with the TreK models and the old 1130 engine There is a bargain alarm) or MV Agusta (where the Brutale 920 flown from the 2013 program is waiting for buyers who want to save 1000 euros). The very last brand new -Buells, of which a few can still be found, have real collector potential. Instead of 12,100 euros, the Ulysses then only costs 8,790 euros, and even the super sports car 1125 R can be found for less than 10,000 euros. Do you like it more exotic? No problem: Google Victory Vegas, the US sweetheart is available as a very cheap short version or as a demonstrator.
