Where to go in winter

If you don’t want to do without motorbike fun in winter, you need imagination, a competent travel agency and some change. We looked through the catalogs of the tour operators and discovered some bargains.

The gentle sound of the sea, palm leaves over white beaches, sun, warmth – do not say you have no fantasies when you have just sneaked back shivering and with a minimal incline over leaves and traces of clay on your great house route? There are seasons that spoil the most beautiful hobby. Either you have to switch to the stamp collection now or you have to plan motorcycling with a little geographical distant view. Because winter can also be fun for two-wheeler freaks, really. You have a week, you say? Okay, let’s have a look around then. Hard-core and financially well-off natures don’t have to go far. Anyone who owns a team or can expand their vehicle fleet with it (acquisition costs around 25,000 marks for a usable vehicle) get heated grips and super warm clothes and drive through the Alps in stable high-pressure weather conditions. Their full winter splendor must and should not only be reserved for ski bunnies and can be experienced relatively carefree on a tricycle. Bikers who prefer it a little warmer are recommended a trip to the south of France and Spain. Sometimes even from Avignon, but at the latest from Barcelona, pleasant temperatures and perfect road conditions spoil you – especially an ideal terrain for owners of sports motorcycles. The journey – 800 to 1300 kilometers from Stuttgart – is sometimes even possible by axle in mild winters, otherwise vans or trailers are advisable. In the eastern Mediterranean, on the other hand, the temperatures are significantly lower, the roads are worse, and the journey is more complex. Enduro freaks only have to travel across the Mediterranean from France or Spain and then find unique slopes in Libya or Morocco. But be careful: at night and in the regions of the Atlas, it is bitterly cold there too. If you want it to be easier, you should consider the offers of the travel agencies. In almost all southern European holiday and seaside resorts there are also rental motorcycles. Most of the 125 cc models on offer are sufficient for exploring the area. While the Mediterranean islands do not spoil you with mild breezes in winter, Madeira and the Canary Islands, which lie deep in African latitudes, are actually predestined for winter refugees who are ambitious motorcyclists. With summer temperatures, mountains over 3000 meters high, tiny streets, inexpensive and uncomplicated travel options and a good range of rental motorcycles, they are a real tip. Flight, accommodation and a week of motorcycle fun doesn’t have to cost more than 1500 marks. Dig a little deeper into your pocket when it comes to motorcycle delights in the Caribbean and Central America, which are also among the bargains on the winter market. The adventure starts here between 2500 and 3000 marks for flight, accommodation and a week’s motorcycle rental. Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Honduras, Mexico and Costa Rica are currently the destinations with opportunities for bikers – either organized or individual. Far more complex and therefore less suitable for a short trip are all destinations in the southern hemisphere: Australia and New Zealand, South America and that southern africa. The mostly expensive flights alone thwart cheap offers. While organized trips as well as individual tours on rental motorcycles are possible in Down under and southern Africa, in South America there is only the alternative between group travel and the transfer of your own motorcycle there. Enduro Fun opens up uncomplicated and inexpensive routes to Asia: 16 days motorcycle package tour for 2,450 Marks, so if your front wheel has gone off on leaves and beet clay for the umpteenth time and your hands and feet only come back to life after hours of bathing, then remember that the pre-Christmas season can offer more than Advent wreaths and cookies. Promised. .

Brazil

As the only tour operator, GS-Sportreisen does not rely on the Andes region for its South America tours, but on Brazilian beaches and jungle paths. The sporty Suzuki DR 350 takes you on three different routes through rivers, over mud slopes and wobbly jungle bridges – the fun begins from 2890 Marks plus flight. In the absence of rental motorcycles, South America is usually more of a terrain for individualists with their own enduro. GS flies the motorcycle there and back from 2200 marks.

Caribbean

The dream destination of winter refugees, the Fatamorgana on cold, wet German winter days – the Caribbean. White beaches, blue lagoons, gently fanning palm fronds, but also high mountains and seething volcanoes – and the whole thing is not that expensive. From 1999 Marks, for example, a week of fully organized motorcycle vacation in the Dominican Republic is included (Enduro Fun) or a rental motorcycle for 400 Marks per week in Costa Rica (GS Sportreisen) and on Jamaica (Bike & Adventure). Anyone who discovers a last minute offer can hit the bull’s eye there.

South America

In winter America is not concerned with the USA – except for Florida – but the southern part of the continent: Mexico, Central and South America. Regions that have long been reserved for adventurous extreme travelers are now part of the program of some tour operators and have become accessible to normal motorcyclists as well. But thanks to constantly falling motorcycle air transport prices (from 2800 Marks there and back) South America is still one of the last bastions of adventurers – Christmas in Ushuaia on Tierra del Fuego is currently an in-tip among globetrotters.

Africa

Placed almost symmetrically to the equator, Africa offers interesting winter destinations in the north and south. While numerous tour operators in the booming southern Africa lure with guided motorcycle tours and rental offers from November to March, the time of the Sahara riders begins in January. Although it is still icy cold in the Atlas, the desert offers bearable temperatures. While southern Africa is more of an expensive pleasure, the Sahara states are also accessible for low-budget enduro riders.

Canary Islands

The tip for winter refugees par excellence – sunny, inexpensive, beautiful. If, depending on the season, you can get a package tour to Gran Canaria, La Palma or Tenerife for a maximum of 1000 marks, take a travel guide and a good map and rent a 250 on site, you can’t really go wrong. All three islands offer mountains, sea and beautiful stretches in abundance, rental motorbikes are available for as little as 50 marks per day (on La Gomera in preparation). Island hopping by ferry is even possible.

Australia

Now is the best time to travel to the fifth continent, because summer now rules in the southern hemisphere. Over a dozen tour operators advertise motorcycle deals for Australia and New Zealand. From the fully organized three-week tour to motorcycle rental for long-term travelers, whether road or enduro, outback or Sydney – motorcycle tours down under are possible from around 3000 marks. In addition, however, there is the flight, which falls into the top price ranges with at least 2000 marks.

Finland

If it’s winter, then it’s right. With their powerful two-stroke engines, snowmobiles offer at least as much fun as a CBR 900 and are considered the ultimate winter sports device in Finland and Canada. But the Kurfenflitzer can be used not only for races, but also for extensive snow hikes – super warm thermal clothing, heated grips and foot wells make it possible. Such tours can be booked from the MOTORRAD ACTION TEAM, for example, from 2529 Marks.

Spain

The escape route of the MOTORRAD test editors. If Germany no longer offers decent working conditions, they switch to southern France and Spain. Sun, 20 degrees and the best road conditions can be expected from Avignon at the earliest and from Tarragona at the latest. The icy journey, violent storms in Spain and the winter break of many hotels can be problematic. Rental motorcycles are available in Languedoc and Andalusia from 80 marks, trailers and vans in Germany from 50 or 100 marks per day.

Winter travel destinations: Offers from the organizers – Alps

Winter can be fun at home too. An alpine tour in full snow is an experience in a class of its own. The prerequisite for this, however, is a team or at least an enduro bike and extra warm thermal clothing. Then follow the weather and road condition reports carefully. If a high pressure zone is announced after previous snowfall in the Alps, the optimal time is there. Winter sports regions offer the necessary infrastructures, while the wider area usually offers affordable quarters.
