With four mopeds on the Grobglockner

When you are over 30, teenagers are already scrapped. Never mind, we old sacks like to remember our own youth and old irons called mopeds. For many of us, our motorized life began at 25 km / h, but with our coiffures it went faster and further away. And today? We’ll do the same, hurray!

It’s hard to lose comrades on the mountain. But professionals have to focus on their goal: to get to the top. In alpine heights it is unfortunately sometimes impossible to be considerate of ailing comrades-in-arms – survival of the fittest! No, no, such an opportunity should not be missed, what is Mount Everest against this ascent here??

Honestly, there is a queue at Hillary Step at 8,760 meters above sea level, where is the exclusivity for real mountain freaks? Pah. But the Grobglockner with the moped – that is considered one of the last adventures of mankind. Because hey, Alaska, Patagonia, Gobi, Himalayas, everyone can do that on a pre-assembled bike tour, and soon the package tour will probably go to the moon.

But who is so stupid as to dare an alpine cross with the weakest representatives of the motorized two-wheeled fauna? We. Why not, our fathers finally cracked the Grossglockner with an overheated beetle, our forefathers are only clad in fur and pulled over Europe’s highest mountains on the back of a donkey or elephant. That’s OK. Everything takes a little longer.

The hour of birth of motorized life

With four mopeds on the Grobglockner

Dentges, Lohse

What now? At a snail’s pace on the expressway? Forbidden! Fortunately, there is a workaround for tractors.

the Tomos Alpino pulls and pulls and pulls, fights his way up, coughs, breathes heavily, is about to give up, but with a big fighter heart it goes meter by meter towards the top of the pass, to the Hochtor at 2504 meters. Classic, Flexer and Racing have caved in on the southern ramp to the Grobglockner, the highest mountain in Austria at 3798 meters. The associated high alpine road is “only” the eighth highest, but is one of the most beautiful mountain passes in the Alps. And actually the plan was to cross the Alps with four different mopeds. In fact.

The start was the day before at the Tomos forwarding agent in Wolfsberg, around 60 kilometers away from Klagenfurt in Austria’s southernmost state, Carinthia. The Slovenian manufacturer Tomos (www.tomos-motor.com) has four small calibers on offer, two of which, limited to 25 km / h, can also be driven by 15-year-olds. Because the motto of the tour was: Remember how it was back then. Well, what do you think almost everyone thinks of when they think of the birth of their own motorized life? Exactly: moped!

Suspended with 25 things from amateur cyclists

Our editors Thorsten Dentges (41), Jorg Lohse (43), Rainer Froberg (49) and Klaus Herder (50).

In the 1970s and 1980s, the cute motorcycles mobilized entire generations of young people, including those involved in this Alpine Cross: Herder began his career as a motorist in 1977 on a Jawa moped from the Quelle catalog, Froberg equipped a blue and silver one Zundapp ZD 20 paid regular visits to his dear grandmother, who lived 30 kilometers away, at the end of the 1970s; these were his first self-sufficient trips. As an Emslander, Lohse (born 1969) was proud of his anthracite-colored Hercules Prima 5 with white rims (born 1984), which still drove 28 in (constant) headwinds. And Dentges, as an eleven-year-old traffic delinquent, had a long liaison with a Piaggio Ciao for the first time during the farm holidays in Bavaria in 1982, which he used for extended land excursions outside the police radar.

Anyone who turned up at the quarry pond or open-air swimming pool with two-stroke instead of two-legged operation counted for something. Hairbrush in denim jacket, fox tail on handlebars, feet up on the frame – despite the downy beard and acne landscape on your face, you felt like the boss. Of course, the fact that you were left behind by every amateur cyclist with 25 things could not be left standing, so it was time for the cylinder, pinion or exhaust. Probably everyone knew someone who knew someone, his brother “his buddy” had again heard from a hairdressing magician from the neighboring village, “whose moped 120 is running”. And there were also the madmen who went on the most adventurous tours on their mopeds, sometimes even abroad.

Will we survive even one single pass??

With four mopeds on the Grobglockner

Tomos for cash – dealer Bruno Payer (right) fixes big boys like the editor Klaus Herder as an importer.

The romantic memories unfortunately fade when the money is handed over in the here and now, and after a few test laps on the forwarding car park in Wolfsberg, the lines of concern on the foreheads of the budding moped enthusiasts increase. Was the plan just a stupid crazy idea after all, will we survive even one pass, ever see home again in the face of only formal brakes? Well, unthrottled, the parts run at 45 km / h, an average speed of over 30 is quite possible. If only there weren’t these damned mountains …

Blue hour over Lake Worthersee, neighboring vacation spots are colored by the colorful neon lights of the bars and ice cream parlors. It is progressing. The seating position on the mopeds is astonishingly good, even if the seats are only sparsely padded. But terrific: the flat knee angle thanks to the extremely low footrests. In general, the ergonomics on the 50 cubic bikes are a positive surprise, the high and well-cranked handlebars lie comfortably in the hands, the vibrations of the two-stroke are well tolerated, downright entertaining, the noise level and wind pressure at 30 km / h are very mild for the pilot.

With the moped like Alice in Wonderland

With four mopeds on the Grobglockner

Dentges, Lohse

The Alpino wins the mountain classification on the Grobglockner. After all, some sporty cyclists can be flattened at 13 km / h.

The chain of four is bobbing leisurely, the strip of asphalt makes bends-free at this speed and runs straight to the barely contoured evening horizon. There is scent in the air – but which one? Sweet, fruity, now more intense and now very clear: strawberries. To the left and right of the street you can pick fields yourself, a sign: “Strawberry Country”. Where you only scurry past on a motorcycle, if you want a taste at most, as a moped driver you can experience this agricultural area, which is perhaps two by two kilometers, like Alice in Wonderland. Molecules swirling through the air form a delicate fruit sorbet in the mouth, the strawberries rise again on the palate. Fantastic. Anyone who travels in slow motion perceives what is around them much more intensely, it is the much-described discovery of slowness.

After 120 kilometers, however, the senses report in another place: the bottom. 10 p.m., time for the night rest. At the first inn, the moped rockers receive a rebuff, allegedly all rooms are occupied – with cyclists. At the other guesthouse on site, the gang is greeted more friendly. Above all from Josef, who is a permanent guest at the bar, who examines the Tomos tied in front of the door with a glazed look and smoky smile. He knows that they are Puch, right??

Old men crew in the bad button look

In general, in the league “50 plus without a driver’s license” (for whatever reason …) there are many fans, and there, in particular, the Classic and the Flexer meet with great interest. Another group of sympathizers is the age group 13 to 18, teenagers. Girls with pink tank tops on fancy 50s scooters, boys with cool caps on BMX bikes, village youth at the bus stop – they all enthusiastically wave to the old man crew in the Bad-Taste look, give their thumbs up. Then someone else said, mopeds are out …

Evelyn (17), Austrian provincial sweeper, surrounded by old men in an unfavorable wardrobe. But after looking at the mopeds: cooool!

Next morning: Behind the 1000-soul village Heiligenblut, which is around 1200 meters above sea level, the road climbs angrily. Over ten percent. Tomos Classic and Flexer slow down to walking pace, the two-speed automatic cannot decide, on short steep ramps then complete standstill. Pushing is the order of the day. The Tomos Racing has a shorter translation and carries the 94-kilo man Herder slowly, but reasonably solidly, towards the toll station on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. The Alpino can cope with a driver’s weight of 85 kilos reasonably well, although Dentges has to constantly stir the four-speed gearbox to find the right gear ratio. Two kilometers from the toll station, the automatic Tomos smell unpleasantly of clutch. Because we don’t want to murder any material, we decide to cancel. The Tomos Alpino is already out of sight.

Moped is loaded into family van

With four mopeds on the Grobglockner

Dentges, Lohse

Slovenian BMW drivers meet country vehicles – fraternization with the moped gang.

While the colleagues ponder alternative transport options (BMW drivers from Slovenia offer their towing services, there would be space for the three machines on the trailer of a wooden truck), the escort vehicle catches up. And indeed: the family van swallows at least one piece of moped and is converted into a Fuschertorl shuttle. From there it is only downhill at first.

In the meantime: The Alpino driver shelled out a 17 Euro toll (begging only brought about a small discount for small vehicles), visited the Franz Josef Hut (2369 meters) on the Grobglockner Glacier, experienced the spectacular panorama of the Hohe Tauern, Head-to-head races with kicking racing cyclists, greeted by hundreds of motorcyclists sometimes pityingly, sometimes amazed, mostly beaming with joy, fraternized with shivering mountain bikers at 6.3 degrees and met two figures hooded in rain ponchos 2000 meters above sea level in the middle of the fog Tractor and caravan in tow, apparently also on a slow-motion journey. The tractor with the ship’s horn as a greeting, the mopeds at room volume: trooot.

Downhill with what felt like 70 things

At the Fuschertorl then a big hello and see you again with the comrades believed lost, afterwards everyone felt downhill with at least 70 things, yeah! For the high alpine road with a good 40 kilometers it took a total of three hours, for the further 100 kilometers to the second stage destination Walchsee another five hours with breaks. Such a moped travel day can be extremely long – but it is also extremely eventful.

Street stories are exchanged over Tyrolean bacon and wheat beer: from Kreidler clubbers on the way to the meeting who hooted their respect for the Tomos gang, from rain-shy Harley custom bikers who let themselves be canned by the 50 cubic knights, from one of the mopeds -Tourists frenetically cheering extended family who almost knocked their grill table over while waving. And from countless little nice encounters on the roadside or at gas stations. Moped connects, moped is timeless, moped turns on, that’s the unanimous conclusion of this alpine tour. On the morning of the third day, we should continue to Munich. On the map, the Stilfser Joch is only a few centimeters away … You shouldn’t dare to do it again?

Tomos Classic XL 25/45

With four mopeds on the Grobglockner

Dentges, Lohse

The Tomos Classic XL 25/45 shines – not only because of its delicious wire-spoke wheels.

The eye-catcher in the Tomos program: Young girls melt away, older men shed a tear for joy. The speedometer is in the headlight housing, whitewall tires and many chrome parts are pleasing to the eye. Classic and Flexer have the same, slightly lower compression engine than Alpino and Racing, but run away from them on the flat. However, as soon as a little incline comes into play, the Classic and Flexer have no chance compared to their more powerful sister models and are made for city rather than intercity traffic. The classic swinging saddle polarizes: two riders loved it, two hated it – try it out. Those who put function above everything are a little better served with the (cheaper!) Flexer. But the reactions of the environment showed: the eye goes with it.

I drive Tomos because …

… the Tomos Classic XL 25/45 mobilizes the feelings that once accompanied the flight into the distance. Although in baby blue, with whitewall tires and swirled writing (“The Original Future”) it does not correspond to the spirit of the teenage days. But when the two-stroke sings, the speedometer needle on the 50 trembles and is carried out from the slipstream, everything is right again. Big cinema!

Tomos Alpino 45

With four mopeds on the Grobglockner

Dentges, Lohse

Kick off and off you go: four gears, almost a motorcycle feeling with the Tomos Alpino 45.

Do you live in Bavaria, Austria or Switzerland? Then the Alpino should be the first choice, only it managed the Grobglockner High Alpine Road completely on its own. But when everyday life is usually not that alpine, the four-speed footshift is more of a hindrance, because constantly doing magic with the clutch and stirring in the transmission can be a bit annoying in the long run – at least that’s how the four MOTORRAD Mofler felt it. The three other Tomos lighters ran away on the flat, while the Tomos Racing is superior on slight inclines thanks to its always-fit translation. This leaves a very limited range of uses for the Tomos Alpino – unless the youngsters are to be accustomed to intensive hand and foot training. Alpino driving has something of the blissful mokick times.

I drive Tomos because …

… that Tomos Alpino carries you everywhere. Okay, the gearbox isn’t a Swiss movement, but it shifts. The experience of crawling up to the top of the pass at walking pace, eating every meter of altitude individually, and then flying down into the valley with practically no braking (because of spongy drums) – wonderful! Tomos Racing 45

Looks and drives like a stripped scooter – the Tomos Racing 45. Very convincing: the neatly gripping disc brakes.

The gentleman there weighs 94 kilos net, which is so terrifying is the extremely thick and cuddly lined Brandit Giant jacket by Louis (99.90 euros) – after all, there was snow on the Glockner. So with a backpack and all the trimmings, it makes a good two hundred pounds of combat weight plus moped weight, with which the pleasantly powerful Racing had no problems even on medium gradients and drove away the other three. Downhill, the disc brake lived up to its model name. In terms of sound, the Racing is way ahead and the ergonomics are better than on any scooter. The spring elements do a – well – somewhat “rustic” job, the light is catastrophic. The Racing offers little of the classic moped / moped handling, it has its very own style – you have to like it.

Tomos Flexer XL 25/45

Dentges, Lohse

Tomos Flexer XL 25/45 – Heaven, more power please!

The bottom line was that the cheapest Tomos moped landed at the top of the personal moped charts for all four drivers, because it fits best with the topic of “puristic locomotion”. The Tomos Flexer XL 25/45 is a thoroughly honest device, no bells and whistles, no glare – just a solid motor that brought the heaviest driver to the front on the flat, a comfortable workplace, stable driving behavior and nothing that can break. When refueling (thank god separate lubrication, only the Alpino needs a mixture) the manual tank venting is a bit annoying, the speedometer display fluctuates between 20 and 50 km / h at constant speed, and the quality of the paintwork is occasionally quite casual. Nevertheless: top price-performance.

It’s the enthusiasm of the people that inspires me. You forgot the slow pace after just three minutes.

Info about the tour

With four mopeds on the Grobglockner

Mairdumont / Werel

The duration of the trip is three days. A total of approx. 500 km are covered.

Traveling with mopeds. That sounds like pure deceleration. But there are pitfalls in everyday traffic that quickly bring the pulse to 180. Tips for a relaxed tour at 45 km / h.

Law & traffic
Mopeds (literally the MO-torized FA-hrrad) are limited to a maximum of 25 km / h in Germany. This poses a real obstacle even on small country roads – here you can only survive with thick fur. The ride on cycle paths approved for motor-assisted bicycles is much more pleasant. In other European countries (including Austria and Switzerland) there is a speed limit of 45 km / h for mopeds, which makes it noticeably easier to swim with the flow of traffic. However, here too some (high-speed) roads are taboo and require a well-thought-out route. Cycle maps are usually more helpful for planning than conventional road maps. Tip: allow the moped as a moped / moped without throttling.

On the tour
In Austria you can travel well on country roads running parallel to the autobahn. Even steep inclines can be elegantly avoided. However, this increases the length of the route. Including refueling and short breaks (“cigarette length”), around four hours must be calculated for 100 kilometers. Extreme climbs such as the Grossglockner High Alpine Road can be torture even for unthrottled mopeds, especially if they have an automatic transmission. And even harmless mountain crossings such as the Thurn Pass from Mittersill to Kitzbuhel (1274 meters, Ø gradient 4.6 percent) require a tough hand on the throttle. Downhill, on the other hand, the tires with poor grip and drum brakes quickly reach their limit (keyword fading). On the other hand, the fuel balance, which averaged 1.9 l / 100 km per moped on the tour described here, was pleasing.

Stay
A real stroke of luck was the (spontaneous) stop at the “Wildauerhof” in Walchsee (www.wildauerhof.at) with beautiful rooms, delicious breakfast and good regional cuisine (single room / breakfast from 55 euros), where an enthusiastic junior boss Christian Wildauer gave us his showed old Puch collection.
