In September 2018, Gogoro and Yamaha an agreement that provides for all-electric scooters developed by Gogoro, including a battery exchange system, to be sold by Yamaha. In 2019, the Yamaha EC-05, the first electric scooter with the Yamaha label, was presented, which was created in cooperation. Technically, this Yamaha scooter is based on the 2-Series from Gogoro. Yamaha has not yet revealed the final specifications.

For now only in Taiwan

The Yamaha EC-05 has, among other things, the drive train and the batteries from the Gogoro. The top speed can be up to 90 km / h, but a throttled 45 km / h version is also conceivable for Europe. The range is given as 110 kilometers. There are two replaceable batteries on board. The batteries can be conveniently charged at home. A charging time of 2.5 hours is specified for the EC-05.

The Yamaha EC-05 will take to the streets in Taiwan from August 2019.

In addition, at least in Taiwan, the batteries can be exchanged for a fully charged battery at a charging station using the battery exchange system. The dashboard of the EC-05 is similar to that of the Gogoro 2. The electric scooter is equipped with a keyless system and can connect to the smartphone via app and Bluetooth. Distribution, which is initially limited to Taiwan, is carried out through the Yamaha dealer network. It is still unclear whether the EC-05 will make its way to Europe.

Proven in the Indian market

Currently (2020/2021) Yamaha is carrying out various feasibility studies, including for the Indian market. Because India is currently the world’s largest market for motorized two-wheelers. If a model is successful here, it can work on the Asian – and possibly also on the world market.

Not the first Yamaha electric scooter

Yamaha had previously built the E-Vino electric scooter in Taiwan, which is also exported to Japan. Gogoro has been manufacturing electric scooters since 2015 and also operates a battery exchange system in Taiwan with currently almost 1,000 stations. The charging stations hold full batteries that can be exchanged for empty energy storage devices in a few simple steps.

Gogoro

DHL could also be won as a partner.

In addition to Yamaha, the scooter manufacturers Aeon and PGO could also be won as partners for the use of standard batteries and the battery exchange system. In addition, Gogoro has threaded a deal with DHL and the Taiwanese Post Office in which the service providers rely on Gogoro electric scooters in their sales system.
