More suspension, brakes, lights and style for the MT-07

The first impression counts. That’s how it was, that’s how it is, and that’s how it remains. As the Yamaha MT-07 Launched in 2014, it took hearts by storm and won series benchmarks. It was a stroke of luck on wheels right from the start: light, lively and agile, high-torque, easy-turning and fast. With this intoxicating character, the 185-kilo lightweight picked up completely different natural drivers where they are: beginners thanks to their super easy controllability, experienced pilots because they can MT-07 can drive really cheeky. But because a slight revision was due for the currently valid Euro 5 emissions standard anyway, Yamaha took another look at its successful model (around 125,000 units produced so far, after BMW’s big GS number two in Germany!).

And again the story begins with an important first impression: It looks more aggressive, the 2021 MT. This is ensured by the fighter-like mask with LED strips to the right and left of the projection lens of the dainty LED main headlight. Yes, the new front is polarizing. Does a fighter attitude fit such an affable character? This is hotly debated. The fact is: real and live, the front looks much better than on the first photos. After all, the facelift shows at first glance that you have the current model. Isn’t that the whole point, isn’t it? And this facelift includes all-round lighting with maintenance-free light-emitting diodes, indicators and Y-shaped taillights.

Only connoisseurs will probably notice the air inlets now elegantly integrated into the tank flanks. You are not a fake. This is where the twin, equipped with a new mapping and a revision of the valve train and injection, sucks in its oxygen. After the combustion, the brilliant engine exhausts through completely redesigned manifolds. They integrate an extra-large catalyst. It sits close to the outlet so that it heats up quickly. Clean, clean, the 690 cubic centimeter “CP2 series twin”. Its crankshaft with the connecting rods offset by 270 degrees imitates the firing order and thus the sound and character of a 90-degree V2.

so, Yamaha was the first company to have such a nature with cylinders placed side by side; with a technical trick on the crankshaft, back then in the TRX 850. Today, KTM, Honda and many other manufacturers do the same. As usual it is “small” Twin a really big one: elastic in the lower speed range, powerful and completely free when turning over 9000 tours. Yes friends, the twin of the MT-07 is always there, bottom-middle-top. No wonder that this unit also mutated into the celebrated organ donor in the 700 series Tracer and Tenere. A real joy donor. Wait a minute, shouldn’t the modified twin press one and a half horsepower and Newton meters less than before? And if so. Because the maximum peak output of 73 hp is now 250 revs earlier at 8,750 rpm, and the torque of 67 Nm is drawn towards the rear wheel at 6,500 tours.

“Even more linear power development”, So Yamaha promises a more even torque curve. Could be true. This crossplane twin is still inspiring, maybe even more than before. With his unexcited nature, this nonchalance, no matter what speed and gear you are currently using. The lively twin competes well and good-naturedly. The pseudo-V2 hangs smoothly on the gas. The lack of traction control is easy to get over. The engine is still a really strong guy, already from 2000 tours. The gearbox and clutch do their job unobtrusively. The whole thing is garnished with a beautiful, dull and at the same time unobtrusively quiet sound, suitable for Tyrol with 88 decibels (A) of standing noise and 4.2 liters of standard consumption. Va bene.

Toy or lighter?

If you are freezing, but feel wonderfully secure on your motorcycle and sing under your helmet, that means a lot. The astonishingly strong change in seating position also helps here. The changed coordination of the spring elements from Kayaba is really successful. In particular, the lever-operated shock absorber with the adjustable rebound stage is more powerfully cushioned. Nothing wobbles anymore. And the non-adjustable drive-and-economy fork in works very well. Long waves, hard heels, rugged frost breaks (yes, there are also those in southern Italy) parried the only slightly modified chassis of the year 2021 simply more relaxed. You can feel the asphalt relief, but your bottom tester doesn’t suffer from it. That’s how it should be.

Speaking of sitting: Here, too, the 700 Yamaha achieves a great balancing act: thanks to the narrow cut, small sizes safely get both soles of their feet on the safe ground when standing. Longer dimensions, on the other hand, say by 1.85 meters, can easily cover 200 kilometers of country roads without pinching or pinching thanks to the wide bench in the rear area and a generous knee joint. A honeycomb structure on the tank flanks ensures good contact with the machine, just like on a sports bike. This goes well with the better braking power, thanks to the 298 discs from the big sister MT-09. The axial four-piston saddles bite it firmly and can be dosed very neatly. They are not angry walkers, but good, really good everyday stoppers.

Just like the MT-07, built in Japan, is a really good buddy, a great companion in everyday life. Then that’s enough “inverse” white-on-black LCD cockpit with its liquid crystals. Because actually more is possible with something like this, colorful TFT displays are also available in the middle class these days. Well, you have to feel the red pencil somewhere, in this price-sensitive segment. The not fundamentally new, but significantly better MT-07 from 2021 costs 7,374 euros. That is a moderate 204 euros more than in 2020. Our conclusion: it is easily worth it. The success story goes into the next round. Reloaded. Let’s see what that means for the proven high used prices of the previous Yamaha MT-07.

Conclusion

One for all. With Yamaha’s MT-07 everyone has gotten really warm so far and the continuously improved properties are currently reaching a high point with an even better chassis and more powerful brakes. The new LED front is also pleasing. Whether 1.4 HP and 1 Nm are missing after Euro 5 is almost under the measurement tolerance.
